5 out of 5 eggsNice PSU

Pros: This PSU has so far been up to the task for me. My machine isn't ultra high-end:
AMD FX8350
2x AMD R9 285's
16GB of RAM
Blu-Ray Burner/Drive
2 HDD's
Far too many USB peripherals

So far the PSU has given me no trouble whatsoever. I have it mounted with the fan facing down (my case has vents on the floor to allow for this). I haven't had any problems with my fan making noise, rubbing or failing as others have reported. That's not to say other reports are illegitimate, just simply that mine has not had this problem.

So far mine has been up to the task and doesn't run particularly loud even at full load. Of course, this is based on what my computer throws at it, which is probably not the full 1000W's it is rated for.

It also looks very nice and the construction quality seems to be pretty decent.

Cons: Nothing so far aside from the lack of a case badge. Call me strange, but I like to slap the stickers from my various components on the case and unfortunately this was pretty much the only core component that did not come with one.

Other Thoughts: It does the job as far as I have seen. Is it built as well as the top tier expensive PSU's? Likely not, but it still seems to be well above the bargain PSU's.

5 out of 5 eggsLooks orange but it's actually not

Pros: This partial modular powersupply is beautiful. I was worried that the color wouldn't match the rest of the computer I was building but I'm happy to say the picture doesn't do it justice. The black and red scheme looks almost like a metal flake paintjob with matte black to make the red pop. Other then that it's a power supply it hasn't blown up and it worked out of the box so what else could i ask.

Cons: If i had to give a con it would be that the cables that come with it for the modular connection gave me a lot of headaches. the 8pin connectors have the 6 and 2 design I hate. the sata power cables all seemed to have the connectors upside down (for the way i was building) took a very long time to get all the cable management under control. I also wish the perment cables were on the right side of the powersupply instead of the left so they would have been easier to hide away. minor gripes though it's a truely awesome supply

Other Thoughts: I don't regret buying this supply for a second. Neither will you! for the money I'm pretty happy.

4 out of 5 eggsBang for the money

Pros: Running 2 GTX 770 with FX-6300 OC @5Ghz. It's running perfectly.

Cons: Fan is hitting the grill when my PC is under heavy load. It stopped doing it now when I moved the grill a little.

3 out of 5 eggsWell-priced entry into the kilowatt range, but with issues

Pros: Got this on sale, and it was among the lowest-priced 1000W PSU available. For larger systems, this PSU provides six quasi-independent 12V rails (think graphics cards), but use of the 12V rails has to be carefully planned if the PSU is supposed to run under near-full load: only two of the rails provide 28A (336W); the others only 24A (288W). Interestingly, the total load on all 12V rails is as high as 960W, according to the specs, which is pretty good.

The almost-full modular cable management is a plus, although the main power and CPU power cables are not modular. Sufficient cable choices are included.

This PSU has run under almost full load (measured 1000W input, probably 800-850W output) for over a month, and it has not failed.

Cons: The worst problem is the fan. Other reviewers already highlighted a design flaw that the fan scrapes the grille in a fan-down mounting position (i.e., any case where the PSU is mounted above the board). This is unacceptable, because the problem is known to Cougar, according to one reviewer.

Staying with the fan, it is absolutely not quiet, even under no load (i.e., room temperature). If the PSU runs under high loads, expect significant sound emissions. But then again, this fan would only be one of several loud fans in such a system.

Even worse, when I modified the fan assembly slightly to increase the distance to the grille, the scraping stopped, but the fan started some form of death rattle -- again only in the upside-down position. I replaced the fan by a different product (more cfm, less noise), and the fan issues are now solved. Note that any such action voids the warranty; I was unwilling, however, to deal with the RMA process.

Another problem is electronical -- a load change on the gaphics cards causes a noticeable flicker in the room lights. Either the primary sieve capacitors are underdesigned, or the PFC electroncis causes considerable load transients. Whichever the cause, it is a design deficiency.

A minor con: Although the cables are sleeved, the sleeve appears to be some form of plastic shrink tube. It gives a cheap impression, and in addition makes the cables more rigid than necessary.

Heat dissipation is another interesting aspect of the PSU and, by extension, the overall system. Something that draws 1000W requires a well-vented space, because a small room would quickly overheat. OK in winter, but a serious problem in summer. This PSU claims an efficiency of 87% under full load, meaning, it would dissipate on its own some 130W, this is as much as a small hairdryer on medium setting.

Other Thoughts: As usual, you get what you pay for. This is a low-cost work horse. I'd probably feel more confident if I could use it on a computer with lower power consumption, but this one has grown over time. It is generally a good idea to over-dimension the PSU as to not run into any power limitations.

The fan issue reminds me of a different Cougar fan that I reviewed recently, and which also had a much higher noise level than advertised (plus a wobbling motion of the impeller). Perhaps Cougar should outsource their fan dvelopment.

Overall, this PSU is a good choice for the high-end gaming computer, where a potential failure is not mission-critical; for systems that need very high reliability, however, paying some additional $100 may get you away from the "entry-level" feel.

Welcome to the kilowatt club.

1 out of 5 eggsLight Show

Pros: Runs quietly, Delivered stable power

Cons: Blew up. 45 days after purchase. Sparks, buzzing...the whole works.

Other Thoughts: It ran well for a month. Noticed one day it had popped the breaker. Reset the breaker, and pressed the power key and sparks shot out of the computer. I can see what appears to be a shorted transformer inside the power supply. Awesome that it happened just outside of my exchange period. Now I will have to deal with the manufacturer, which clearly states they rebuild your returns.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product! Great Price!

Pros: 6 rails of 12V
Product finish and packaging
Cable management
Thick power cord and cables

Cons: Nothing.....

Other Thoughts: I purchased the limit allowed (5) on Newegg. Was my first purchase with Newegg and will not be my last. I never write any review and was extremely please with all major bullets I look for in a product and company.
1) Price (not main factor)
2) Price vs Quality
3) Company
4) Speed of delivery
I purchased 5 items at one time paid overnight shipping and extra fee for processing. Newegg delivered exactly what I paid for without a hiccup. Like I said I don't mind paying if you can deliver what you write on your website when I purchase.

2 out of 5 eggsFan Hits Grill

Pros: Looks Cool and Works

Cons: Fan hits the grill if mounted fan face down

It only comes with a few cables, it only came with two PCIE Cables even though the PSU has a ton of PCIE Slots on it......

Other Thoughts: Thinking about returning it and buying another brand........ something like this shouldn't have the fan mounted so tight up against the grill . . . the case I have has a fan port for the psu fan on it, so all you hear is the psu fan grinding against the grill........

4 out of 5 eggsGood Price - Nothing Wrong So Far

Pros: Good Price; Good Looks; Great Shipping

Cons: None so far, though the fan started making a very slightly odd noise for a few seconds. It's gone now though.

Other Thoughts: Just in case, I bought the warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsSince 2011. Still going strong.

Pros: I've been running this unit, 24/7, since the day it arrived on my doorstep way back in February of 2011. It's been through terrible storms on both sides of the nation, power surges, power outages, brown outs, you name it and it's still running at or near peak efficiency.

The modularity is also very much appreciated, as is the spiffy nature of the cable sleeves.

Cons: My power company loves this thing, if the bill is any indication, but a few additional bucks a month is to be expected.

Other Thoughts: It's a slick looking supply. The orange/black metallic finish is great, but clashes a bit with the rest of my setup. Not that it matters, as its buried in the recesses of my machine.

Also, some folks have been reporting duds, and I feel quite badly for them, yet my experience with the product has been the polar opposite.
