4 out of 5 eggsStill working

Pros: Bought this in 2011 (another one same time - Startech died w/in a year) It works great.

Cons: Only wish it could handle more than 4 drives. I have 6 now, all used for video storage and swapping them out is tedious.

Other Thoughts: I'm looking for another station but didn't want to get another dud, so looking for another one from this manufacturer.

4 out of 5 eggsLasted for over 3 years

Pros: Competitive Price
Good Looks
Works as expected when you know what you're doing
Auto fan speed (fairly quiet at the lowest setting)

Cons: Abysmal User Manual (a simple leaflet)
Ditto for customer service (no support tel# on their website, late and incomplete replies on the support forum)
Awkward drive bracket and front cover
Replacement boards are not publicly available, you have to struggle to get one

Other Thoughts: I used this box for about 3 years, 24/7, connected through an eSata cable, it just recently failed and the problem was the Sata backplane board. Instead of throwing the whole box away I decided to try and get a replacement board which required me to go through their support forum and when that wasn't enough by emailing the RMA department (yes they do have one!!).
They told me that they sent a few replacement boards to their Toronto office (which is just one very small unit in an industrial mall littered by computer and Mediasonic parts). I took my dead box there and the board was replaced in couple of minutes for $35 + tax
I can now get a few more years out of my USB2 box, but in the meantime I purchased the USB3 version anyway for my new HTPC.

I think for the price you get a pretty decent unit, not so bad customer support, but don't expect it to last for more than a few years especially if you use it 24/7 like I do.

If Mediasonic included a better user manual with more in depth info on the Sata controllers the user needs to use, they can avoid some confusion and low ratings due to user frustration. I have a rather high tech background but not all users are like that.

3 out of 5 eggseSata doesn't work on Windows 8

Pros: The speeds are great when connected via eSata.

Cons: Very crippled when connected via USB. Smart data is only available for one of the four drives when connected via USB as well.
Managed to get to work with Windows 8 ONCE. I tried different sata drivers but no luck.

Other Thoughts: Would be nice if I could use the eSata on Windows 8. Makes it pretty useless if I need to backup a lot of data.

2 out of 5 eggsGet Extended Warranty

Pros: The product works exactly as advertised and is easy to setup.

Cons: I bought this enclosure in July 2 2012 and I must say it worked perfectly until May 10, 2014. While it's easy to set up, it's not worth the money because it's not durable. Don't you like me and be cheap because you get exactly what you pay for. In the event you decide to purchase this product anyway, make sure you buy a two-year extended warranty otherwise you will be buying a brand-new enclosure.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware

Pros: The concept of a 4-bay enclosure is nice if it works

Cons: Only worked briefly

Other Thoughts: This review comes after a couple of years. This worked nice for a while, but eventually wouldn't read all the drives even though they worked in other enclosures. Works better in external SATA than USB: reads one out of four drives in SATA, won't recognize properly in USB. I'd steer clear of this.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Unit. Working great in my application.

Pros: Good solid external enclosure.
Easy to set-up.
Looks good sitting on the shelf.
Does what it says it will do.
Power synch with host PC.

Cons: There are a lot of rather bright lights on the front. However, the only ones that are distracting, as far as I'm concerned, are the four that run horizontally to the right of the power button. Those lights indicate activity on the drives and they flash as the drives are accessed. This can be distracting when the room is darkened for watching a movie and the movie is on one of these drives. I'm definitely going to find a way to dim those lights a bit.
The power connector being on the side of the box is a bit unusual, though it hasn't caused any problems for me. I think this would be less problematic if they had a compact 90 degree connector rather than a connector that sticks straight out the side of the unit.

Other Thoughts: Earlier this year I built a really nice HTPC and though it had two 2TB drives built into the unit it became readily apparent I was going to need more storage space. Also, I decided it would be a good idea to set up a RAID array of some sort so I didn't have to rely on hard-copy backups of the files on the storage drives. I chose this external enclosure primarily for it's power synch capabilities.
So, I installed four WD 2TB drives, hooked it up to my HTPC via esata using a Star Tech esata card that supports Port Multiplier, then, using W7 software set up three 2TB RAID 1 arrays ( including the two 2TB drives in the HTPC). Everything worked together flawlessly and I'm quite pleased. Couldn't ask for a better outcome.

2 out of 5 eggsPros and cons

Pros: Has esata connection and provides all necessary cables. Good quality at a good price.

Cons: I couldn't place 4 of the drive bay screws since I had sold it. Wanted replacement parts - just the screws but directed me to their web store where the screws can only be purchased with the drive bay bars. $13 or so with shipping for screws! Very irritating customer service. Also, if reselling, you'll get bids for near 45% of the original purchase value. For me, I'm going to avoid Mediasonic.

1 out of 5 eggsHigh hopes dashed

Pros: Cheap, fan on off switch, usb 2.0/esata. Easy to install drives. Good looking.

Cons: Arrived broken. Feel of enclosure was cheap plasticy. Front door was flimsy. Drive bay seemed a bit too big, drives did not fit snuggly.

Other Thoughts: If you have a working one, probably a decent solution. Having arrived broken, I have concerns for longevity of hardware so going to just return it.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent enclosure

Pros: Works great. All drives are easy to locate. Setup is straightforward. Performance has been fast and solid.

Cons: Front door falls off too easily. Lights are too bright

Other Thoughts: Bought this to extend an old Mac Mini to a small home server for media and files. Using 3 2TB Green drives. Runs quiet, cool, and steams beautifully. Definitely going to grab another one of these when I get around to it.

Some people mentioned the cord being on the side as a con. This is not an issue for me. It's flat and sticks out about 2.5, maybe 3 cm (1/2") on the right from the front. It's not in the way, but I figured I'd bring up a little more info on why it may bother others.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Enclosure

Pros: The build quality on this enclosure is good, all of the drives fit securely. Keeps green power drives quite cool, works over USB 2.0 and eSata.

Cons: The power cable for this enclosure is on the side which makes it difficult to place if your workspace is at all crowded. It does not always recognize drives properly over USB 2.0 and requires a port multiplier to recognize multiple drives over eSata.

Other Thoughts: I had 4 WD 1TB Green drives running in this for over a year and it worked great as a RAID 10 setup using my port multiplier RAID controller. The raid controller card (in my system not the enclosure) failed and I had a difficult time getting the drives to show up on USB 2.0. Luckily I had just backed up the data on the array to a 2TB single drive.
