5 out of 5 eggsGreat Easy-to-use Enclosure

Pros: Simple, Easy to setup, Easy assembly

Cons: Heat has gotten to be an small issue, the system runs the HDDs at max speed instead of running them at a low speed until accessed for work. No power save function when turning off main computer but that's why they have the switch...

Other Thoughts: Overall, i am very happy with the product it performs well under heavy loads while editing video. The vibration is minimal in the vertical position and they have not crashed once since using them.

5 out of 5 eggsMediasonic Probox

Pros: Removed old Falcon drive from enclosure and placed in this enclosure. Worked just fine and added USB 3.0 capability. USB 3.0 enclosure accesses data alot faster than when it was in the other enclosure.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Could have included a sata port, but with USB 3.0 being the staple now probably not an issue.

4 out of 5 eggsmediasonic K32-SU3

Pros: easy to set up, works great, for the on sale price of $19.99 its the only affordable SATA III solution, my first one I bought spring of 2013 to use with the 2TB WD drive from a MY BOOK external that was cr*p & after 3 RMA's with WD still had the same problem, I use this for movie & video storage & editing it is connected to my network using it in USB 2.0 mode only it runs 24/7 & has not had one problem in 7 months, it has been reported that some drives may spin down all the time, mediasonic has a firmware update on their website to fix this.

Cons: LED on wrong end, no felt pads for feet, I like to lay my drives flat for safety as I have cats & kittens & don't want it knocked over so I bought 4 felt stick on pads to put on the bottom to absorb any sound & vibration through the desk, it would have been nice to have the LED on the other end as I like to hang the wires down the back of my desk hidden out of the way but would still like to know the state of the drive, these things would have cost them an extra .10 to .25 cents at time of production to have a perfect item rather than a good item

Other Thoughts: I have now ordered a second one at the sale price to build another 2Tb storage drive & would by another if needed

1 out of 5 eggsnot up to par

Pros: it works?

Cons: only saw transfer rates of 40MB/s which is FAR under what usb 3.0 should be able to do. very dissapointed

Other Thoughts: for the most part the thing is fine. functions. just not fast. not usb 3.0 fast. not even usb 2.0 fast. and didnt like it required an external power source

2 out of 5 eggsWorked great, sometimes

Pros: Worked great when it connected, but always seemed a bit finicky on which USB ports it would work in. At first I thought it was my laptop's fault, but...

Cons: it got more picky over time, after about 6 months, it stopped working with any USB ports.

3 out of 5 eggsOk for temp use

Pros: easy to put together, recognizes WD 2TB Green SATAIII drives (even though it will only transfer at SATA 2.5 rate), has single voltage wall transformer ( not garbage brick style) can lay flat if desired.

Cons: no felt or rubber feet to stop vibration, not full sata III 6.0 transfer speed, unit has spin down problem with some WD Green drives, manufacturer has released a firmware update but that simply keeps the drive spinning all the time even when the pc is off (I want a reliable enclosure that simply spins up when I power up the pc & spins down when the pc shuts down) as I use it for a media center & the drive is kept in a different room from the HTPC, what I have is a $10.00 peice of china Junk that will burn out my drive before its time by keeping it spinning 24/7

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace a WD My Book with a spin up on power up problem they could not solve, first off I had to copy all my files off first cuz WD encrypts their external drives now without telling the user or giving them an option even if they choose not to secure the drive it is still encrypted, bad because if your WD enclosure dies you only have 2 options to retrieve your data, you can either buy another external drive the same model & swap the hard drive or you can send it in to WD for expensive data recovery. you can not simply put the drive into another enclosure or a desk top PC as the encrypted partition will not be visible or accessible |& you may end up deleting the partition in the process like I did & have to place it back in the WD enclosure & use "partition guru " to recover your files. so this enclosure works ok for what I need it to I will run it till the drive dies cuz I am through with spending extra to get it running properly after 3 warranty replacement "WD My Book" drives none of which solved the problem this enclosure is not perfect but will do the job @ a good price.

3 out of 5 eggsDoesn't transfer at SATA III/6.0 speed!

Pros: Nice case, although pretty plasticy. Drive installation was easy. VIA VL700 bridge controller supports 3TB drives properly.

Cons: This enclosure uses the VIA VL700 SATA to USB 3.0 bridge chip, which means it only works up to SATA II speeds. In fact, this is mentioned on the product packaging, which is visible in the product description. Shame on me for not zooming in and double-checking! I don't know why Newegg is so inaccurate with their product descriptions! Just read the package! I'll keep the enclosure anyway, since the Seagate 3TB drive I'm using in the enclosure isn't fast enough to get up to SATA III speeds even though it's a SATA III drive.

Other Thoughts: The maximum USB 3.0 transfer speed of this enclosure is about 189 MBytes/sec read/write. This is slower than a proper SATA III to USB 3.0 bridge chip like the ASMedia ASM1051E, which is TRUE SATA III/6.0 (it will do about 260 MBytes/sec). The test was performed with a 256GB Samsung 830 series SSD and a late model MacBook air with USB 3.0 running Blackmagic Disk Speed Test.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works, transfer rate is decent for USB2.0.

Cons: Constantly shutting off the drive. It's very annoying having it load a file and almost immediately spin down the drive. Then have the OS hang for 5 seconds or so while it spins the drive back up because it went idle for 10 seconds.

3 out of 5 eggsdoesn't get detected with Acronis

Pros: was super happy with this purchase before regarding functionality and how it runs, but need to update.

*it runs at USBO 3.0
*ventilated case
*up to SATAIII/6G compatible

Cons: *short cables(less than 3ft max)
*making the HDD frequently spin down and up
*does NOT get detected in Acronis IT over USB 2.0 or 3.0

Other Thoughts: was making Acronis backups to drive in this enclosure for some time and today needed to use it in order to restore a single SSD backup onto a freshly created Intel RAID0. To my greatest surprise the drive was NOT detected in Acronis IT bootable at all, and I tried both USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports. Ended up removing the HDD from this enclosure and using it in USB 2.0 docking station (Startech), worked with no trouble.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat SATA3/USB3 enclosure for the price!

Pros: *awesome price, took it at $19.99 shipped
*easy to install
*supports up to SATAIII/6G drives
*supports up to 4TB drives
*supports USB 3.0 (and comes with such cable)
*nice looking
*ventilated
*power button
*allows for vertical or horizontal stand

Cons: *short cables but it's not a big deal

Other Thoughts: Using it with cheap(ish) Hitachi 5K300 Deskstar (SataIII but only 5400rpm) over USB 3.0 and for large file transfers I am actually getting much better speeds under win8x64 than over SATA3 cable (up to 130MB/s vs 60MB/s) somehow.

HD Tune 2.55 reported however a drop in maximum, average and burst speeds on the drive when used over this USB 3.0 enclosure versus SATA3 cable to motherboard (intel native controller).

HD Tune 2.55 results as min/max/avg/burst speeds in MB/s
a) Intel SATAIII/6G benchmark: 59.3 / 138.8 / 98.0 / 235.9
b) this USB 3.0 enclosure benchmark: 59.3 / 110.5 / 94.4 / 93.0

I still think this enclosure is a great choice if you want/need to throw one one of hard drives outside of case.

Time will tell how long it lasts.
