3 out of 5 eggsBad USB 3.0 Cable

Pros: Slim form factor. Has Power / connectivity light on the top of the enclosure. Stylish design.

Cons: My enclosure would lock up and never finish a trasnfer. I knew the drive in there was good. I noticed a review by Brandon A. that stated his had a bad cable. I was about to return my unit and leave 1 egg feedback. After reading Brandons post about the cable I tried a known working USB 3.0 cable. Low and behold it was the cable! Luckily I have plenty of them. I will keep the device because it does do exactly what I need but I am, needless to say, disappointed by a bad cable.

Other Thoughts: I think the case is somewhat useless or otherwise a gimmick. There is no place to store a cable with it so what is the point of the case?

3 out of 5 eggsGreat, While it lasted.

Pros: Aluminum enclosure (mostly)
USB 3.0
Fit my 2.5" drive perfectly
Small and quick for larger file transfers

Cons: Only lasted 6 months due to the power/USB port on the enclosure broke. The pins for the power/USB became detached from the chip inside the enclosure, rendering it useless.

Other Thoughts: If you're very careful with plugging in and unplugging the power/USB cable, then this enclosure is great.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Buy

Pros: Works well, easy assembly and the materials are well made. Comes with a nice pouch with a snap to hold the drive. Comes with heavy duty cable also.

Cons: Comes with a pouch but no place to store the cable.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible device

Pros: Nice case and design

Cons: Bought two. Each one slows down shortly after starting file copying. Then. somehow this enclosures electronics froze the PC until the USB 3.0 cable was unplugged.

Other Thoughts: I spent hours testing with 2 different hard drives, USB 3.0 ports. The product is awful. Can't afford to return. Don't want more of the same. Will dispose of, but keep the decent USB 3.0 cables and folding vinyl covers, which are quite nice. Too bad the electronic design is faulty.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid - 2 out of 2 bad

Pros: Comes with a carry case. Enclosure is sturdy. Nice design.

Cons: Please note, I did not purchase from NewEgg.

The first one I bought was DOA. No power, no drive recognition, no lights of any sort, regardless of what USB port I plugged it into on multiple computers. Tried it on USB 2.0 and USB 3.0; no joy. Completely dead.

I exchanged it and the second one powered up, recognized the drive but would have continual disconnect-reconnect issues. If you wiggled the unit even slightly, the drive would disconnect as well.

It also hung Windows Disk Management and made any computer it was connected to lock up Windows Explorer. I did manage to format my drive, but as mentioned, it would routinely drop the connection.

Sticking with Vantec. Don't know what came over me to choose something else, other than perhaps having so many Vantecs already and wanting to start differentiating my externals. Oh well.

Other Thoughts: I wish it worked. The drive is rugged and looks good. The case and the vibration dampening rubber adhesive pad are nice features.

4 out of 5 eggsVery happy with this case

Pros: - 2 simple screws to remove the top of the case
- Single light to show both power (blue) and data transfer (red)
- Not bulky
- Comes with nice large-wallet sized carrying case that allows you to leave the drive in the case and still access the USB port

- Tight connection between the drive and SATA connector keeps drive from coming loose.

- Faster Write speeds than another brand (*See Other Thoughts below)

Cons: - Ventilation, or lack thereof, could pose a concern for warmer running HDDs

- Tight connection between the drive and SATA connector keeps the drive from coming loose. Yes, I just said that was a PRO. It's also a 'potential' CON because removing the drive from the connector gave me the impression that if wasn't 100% careful, I would break the SATA connector from it's attachment to the case cap.

- USB3 cable is a on the short side, about 12" IIRC.

Other Thoughts: I like this case. I bought this and another unit (NewEgg part N82E16817801109) at the same time. This case had faster maximum/average write speeds of 220MB/s, whereas the other case topped out at 167MB/s.

I didn't give it 5 stars because of the CONS. But I have no significant complaints about this case.

Regarding the 1-egg review on 1/8/2013... As with any site, take Negative (AND Positive) reviews with a grain of salt. Supposedly the reviewer considers themself a 5-star tech person, yet makes an amateur mistake of confusing USB3 and SATA3. Allow me to clear this up a little bit...
The enclosure "Supports" SATA3 drives, meaning it interfaces with them. But the "Interface" to the computer is USB3. You can't push full SATA3 speeds through a USB3 channel. Theoretical max throughput for USB3 is 5Gbps (GigaBITS, not GigaBYTES). SATA3 theoretical max is 6Gbps.
Adding to this, unless a person is running a RAID setup, there is no single consumer SSD that can push even 5Gbps of data across a SATA3 interface (let alone the theoretical max of 6Gbps), so one shouldn't knock a product to 1-egg because said "5-star tech person" doesn't fully understand technology.
Lastly, the whole USB3 -vs- SATA3 is 100% irrelevant if you are using this for a conventional HDD and not for an SSD. HDDs won't get anywhere near max USB3 speeds, so the max 'speed' of this enclosure is a non-issue.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Enclosure

Pros: Looks great, simple to use. Bought for a Mac user and even they think it is pretty.

Cons: Plastic connectors are a little cheapish

Other Thoughts: For everyday use this is a great product. If you are a heavy user, you may consider instead purchasing a dock.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I ordered two of these for existing 5400rpm drives. Both of the enclosures are nice, use standard Micro-B connectors and the drives don't rattle inside.

Cons: However, one of the drives would just stop after 1-2 seconds of file transfer. I finally determined the problem was a bad USB cable as supplied with the drive. Used other cables with no problems.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a SATA III Enclosure

Pros: Nice slim case. Drive does not Rattle inside

Cons: SATA II. Be warned, this does not have a SATA III controller. the MAX speed you will get is ~200MB/sec. We bought these since they were described as "SATA III". While it may support a SATA III drive, they transfer speeds peak at 200MB/s. A misleading product.
