5 out of 5 eggsWorks great for office backup

Pros: Effective drive bay connection, solid aluminum unit with a padded carrying case if you want extra protection. SSD speeds maintained. Extra connector cables to connect VIA USB on the fly if needed.

Cons: The docking tray is plastic and a bit flimsy, but works fine. It would be nice to have the option of TWO docking trays, or a tray you can buy separately, so this unit could be shared between two PCs via the SATA2 dock. As it is I would like one but would have to buy the whole package to get it.

Other Thoughts: I have used quite a few docking units to back up office data and carry it off-site. They are usually too bulky, or too flimsy. This one seems to have everything covered, and I can do a quick SSD to SSD backup and take it with me at the end of the day. The only thing lacking is to have a second dock for a PC off-site.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: huh? it's free....

Cons: The plastic bracket doesn't fit the 3.5 bay. It leaves noticeable gap. The enclosure is DOA. It's recognized by windows 7, but can't format or do anything to it. Yet, the HDD work perfectly with other enclosure.

Other Thoughts: I'm glad this enclosure came as freebie.

5 out of 5 eggsworks fantastic

Pros: works as advertised, the extra desktop enclosure is an extra bonus, compact and nice feel on the aluminum casing.

happens to match my laptop and makes use of my old 160GB PS3 hard drive. it now accompanies my laptop wherever i go in this neat little enclosure as a backup and storage drive

Cons: LED's are blue and quite bright... can be a bit bothersome if operate it in a dim or darm room (heck it's even bright in a bright room lol)

Have yet to install the enclosure in a desktop yet so no feedback on that...

Like most basic/cheaper HDD enclosures, this one's got a bit of extra space (which means with smaller/thinner drives, there's gonna be some rattle)

Nothing to overthink. My 5 sec solution was just a half piece of packing peanut foam (from the very box I unpacked it from), carefully wedged in a "C" shape at the bottom of the drive. This keeps it nice and snug and was not worth deducting a point for.

Other Thoughts: The desktop dock/enclosure clearly allows for some adjustment, should you choose to run the eSATA or just straight USB when inserted.

Will need to play with this and see how well it holds up when i get my desktop together

4 out of 5 eggsperfect storage

Pros: Perfect storage solution. Light yet tough aluminum is made as small as is physically possible. Perfect for mobilizing data. The alum. case could take more abuse than the hard drive in it could. Also, I almost thought my Win7 would not recognize the drive but it just turned out I was using wrong cable. There are so many options to hook this up. If you are just using USB 2.0 the you use the mini usb to usb double end.

Cons: none i could think of. Companies web site is not kept up to date. When I thought I had a problem I emailed their tech support but it bounced back. Then I saw they had a FB page so went there. With in the first few postings I saw one where a valid tech support email was given to a customer who said they could not message through their website.

Other Thoughts: Once I received mine I felt like all the other reviewers exaggerated some on the permanent mount. It is made of all plastic and flexes but once mounted in a Desk top box it will be more rigid. It should be fine as long as you don't leave it up to pre & teens to be the ones ejecting and inputing where they would be part of a class of individuals who are typically not conscience that tech requires handling with care. In other words, it will last if you are not rough on it.

5 out of 5 eggsDream Come True

Pros: Convenient for moving a drive between systems
Keeps external peripherals to a minimum
Looks fantastic, both in the computer and externally
Keeps drive nice and cool
Includes lots of cables
Most awesome use of a 3.5" drive bay ever conceived!

Cons: Plastic carrier isn't the best idea, some metal would be nice, but it's not worth deducting a point. I'm a little disappointed in the design of the carrier, I'd easily pay double this amount to get one made of aluminum, but it doesn't affect functionality that well, it's just a bit tricky to install. It flexes, so be careful; put the drive in and slide it in and out a few times to test the fit before finishing the installation.

Also, depending on how tight the drive cage is, the bottom-rear seam of the drive may grab slightly when removing the drive. It's not enough to damage anything, just a little weird.

Lastly, it's worth mentioning that the main pieces (the drive enclosure and the carrier) don't seem to be available separately, so if you have multiple desktops or multiple drives, you'll have to get multiple kits and have extras. Their support might have some info, but their website doesn't.

Other Thoughts: This is something I've wanted for quite a long time, and could never quite find in a design I liked. I happened to stumble across this, and it's like a dream come true. I prefer using a desktop PC when I'm at home, but I travel frequently and I have a lot of personal files, so an external drive is a must. It was always such a pain, though, to reconnect the drive when I came home, and it bothered me that it took up desk space. With this, it's a piece of cake, and it's basically an internal drive when I'm at home. Plus, it looks great, especially in a black HTPC case.

Also, the pictures don't show it well, but the drive sits flush when in the carrier, a huge plus over similar products. They really put some effort into the style of this product, creating something that's stylish both in the computer and externally.

2 out of 5 eggsIrony

Pros: Inexpensive, nice aluminum drive enclosure with esata and USB, all cables thoughtfully included, packaged with a useful drawstring pouch and fits flush with the front of the dock.

Cons: Cheap plastic dock, flexed a bit too much in my opinion. The enclosure failed after about a week of use.

Other Thoughts: As nice and solid as the enclosure is and as cheap as the dock is, the irony for me was that the enclosure itself failed first, refusing to recognize any drive connected to it. RMAed through Newegg without a hitch. I thought I could save some money and buy this instead of N82E16817256030 but some things are best learned the hard way.

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful enclosure

Pros: - Blue LEDs!

- The actual enclosure is terrific, possibly my favorite so far of all the ones I've used. Its well built, I think it'll last me quite some time. Also it fits the drive like a sleeve, no wasted space.

Cons: - Removing the drive requires more force then I would like to exert on it, seems to be because of the power connector.

- The docking bay does not seem to be built as well as the enclosure. Plastic is a little thinner overall then I would prefer, however I don't foresee it being problematic.

Other Thoughts: - I purchased this one instead of a more well know competitor's because of the little door that closes the empty hole.

- This type of product is amazing. If you're unsure, you shouldn't be.

- Outfitted with a 640GB WD hard drive. Both ports operate at expected speeds.

4 out of 5 eggsWhat didn't it include?

Pros: Everything you could ever need to hook this up is included. Internal SATA cable, eSATA cable, USB-Y, caddy dock, caddy, and I kid you not... A mini screwdriver.

The dock is interesting, it has a standard sata cable and power adapter coming off the back, almost like it would be internal, but the chassis doesn't really seem to fit anything. I guess this beats installing a eSata adapter...

Cons: Not really impressed with the quality. The caddy dock feels somewhat brittle, I'm not sure how many ejections and insertions it would take before parts start breaking. Incredibly light as well, so it would take 2 hands to lock into place. Aluminum doesn't feel like it dissapates heat nearly as well as the Vantec cases.

Other Thoughts: I bought this and a Vantec to see which one I wanted to use more. Choice is clear, Vantec. It's not a bad product, quite good, just not the level I wanted.

5 out of 5 eggsUpgradeable!!!

Pros: This is in addition to a previous review. I just noticed something about this device, tried it out and thought I'd add that to the review.

* Customizable/Upgradeable

Cons: * concerned about longevity of the product

Other Thoughts: The casing is user modifiable. Upon arrival, you will notice that it comes with power and a SATA to eSATA cable installed. There is also a space for USB if you wanted to make it hot-swappable instead.
I just grabbed the nearest USB mini cable, took apart the drive "socket," installed the cable, removed the eSATA and power cable, and put it all back together. Works wonderfully. That earned it another egg.
I'm going to be really put out if this thing doesn't last more than a year. ;-)
As far as that's concerned: My issues are 2. 1) The tiny spring in the forward left corner on the Newegg product picuture, and 2) the tiny plastic latch at the rear center of the same picture. The latch works by bending to pieces of very thin plastic around a nub lick a pincer and cramming it into a tiny plastic socket.
Still, it's so neat, I may buy a few more just in case.
