5 out of 5 eggsSimple. Clean. Crisp.

This review is from: Tek Republic TUE-300 Aluminum Brash 2.5" Black USB 3.0 Hard Drive External Enclosure for 9.5mm 7mm HDD and SSD (Optimized for SSD, Support UASP)

Pros: Fairly durable and simple nice looking design. Not Rugged, but strong enough. Tested with a 750GB Samsung 2.5" Drive. Works very well.

Cons: The inner rectangular plastic ring which divides the two halves of the case may seem a little flimsy, but not that bad.

Other Thoughts: Just try to brace each half as you pull the case apart. Nice case that is simple and pretty durable.

4 out of 5 eggsSlim, Small, Prepped it FIRST!

This review is from: Tek Republic TUE-300 Aluminum Brash 2.5" Black USB 3.0 Hard Drive External Enclosure for 9.5mm 7mm HDD and SSD (Optimized for SSD, Support UASP)

Pros: Slim, small, came with cable, UASP apparently working: holding even an average SSD (OCZ - Agility 3), file transfers fly. I imagine it would be faster than instant with a better drive -- so would things finish before being started? Really, small files up to about 300MB move so fast that it's remarkable, but that is what you'd expect for the drive in correct working state.

Cons: None really - lost a star because I had to do some prep work in order to make sure I could re-open this case without issue. There are small tabs on the aluminum half-shell that engage the plastic (mid piece?) part, one of three main parts, to secure this case shut. I read that once closed, people could not re-open it without damaging it, so before securing a drive inside, I put some tape below the tabs and took a very small fine file and made the three tabs on one side shorter. This way they engage but it will take less movement to disengage them to open the case. It works. I put the drive in and with modest pressure I can open it with no damage to anything, meaning it is now more than a "single use" part, so I can swap 2.5" drives at will -- and that is what I wanted, but costs a star because I had to mess with it, and learn that I needed to do something in the first place! If you read this you are armed now, NP.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this drive case for 2.5" drives, but if you think you might ever want to swap to a different drive in the future don't forget to prepare the case before closing it the first time or you will probably have to break it open: once closed around a 2.5" drive, like most SSD's and laptop drives, there is not enough room (by design?) to reopen the case to swap drives without damaging the case and possibly the drive.

2 out of 5 eggsBeautiful Failure

This review is from: Tek Republic TUE-300 Aluminum Brash 2.5" Black USB 3.0 Hard Drive External Enclosure for 9.5mm 7mm HDD and SSD (Optimized for SSD, Support UASP)

Pros: Slim
Brushed aluminum
Easy installation

Cons: Failed after a few weeks. I had installed the drive and checked to see that it worked (it did), and then gave the drive as a gift. It worked perfectly at first, but after a few days of use it started to randomly disconnect, and eventually stopped reading all together. As others have mentioned it is near impossible to take the case apart once it has been snapped together. I did manage to get it apart but ended up bending the edges in the process. I tested the HD outside of the case, and it still worked.

4 out of 5 eggsEggcellent, but don't ever disassemble it

This review is from: Tek Republic TUE-300 Aluminum Brash 2.5" Black USB 3.0 Hard Drive External Enclosure for 9.5mm 7mm HDD and SSD (Optimized for SSD, Support UASP)

Pros: It works great and feels very secure

Cons: So secure in fact, I would fear breaking the snap tabs if you disassembled it

1 out of 5 eggsDied after 4 Months. Flimsy

This review is from: Tek Republic TUE-300 Aluminum Brash 2.5" Black USB 3.0 Hard Drive External Enclosure for 9.5mm 7mm HDD and SSD (Optimized for SSD, Support UASP)

Pros: Fine while it worked. It is just a metal jacket with no padding for drive but maybe that is what you want. You probably don't want....

Cons: It died after 4 months. Manufacturer does not even list this product on their website. I would purchase something that was more robust and at skip this thing.

4 out of 5 eggsNice enclosure with one flaw

This review is from: Tek Republic TUE-300 Aluminum Brash 2.5" Black USB 3.0 Hard Drive External Enclosure for 9.5mm 7mm HDD and SSD (Optimized for SSD, Support UASP)

Pros: 1. Aluminum and very nice to look at.
2. Fast...not holding back any device I have put into it (although I have not tested a SSD in it).
3. ASMedia controller chip inside. This a big deal. No VIA junk.
4. Cable is long enough that you won't be frustrated.
5. Micro USB connection end into the enclosure is sturdy. I have not had any random connects/disconnects.
6. Excellent heat dissipation.
7. Inexpensive.
8. Foam shock absorbers inside the plastic interior frame.
9. Stupidly easy to assemble.

Cons: Don't plan on removing the device you put inside it. Once it is in there, you will bend or destroy this enclosure getting it out! The way it is designed does not allow for easy prying to pop the top off, as it is friction clipped all around the edges to the point where you will definitely scratch it and then bend the top cover getting it back open. So, if you don't plan on removing the device any time soon you are good. If you swap drives frequently, then do not buy this one!

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing!!!

This review is from: Tek Republic TUE-300 Aluminum Brash 2.5" Black USB 3.0 Hard Drive External Enclosure for 9.5mm 7mm HDD and SSD (Optimized for SSD, Support UASP)

Pros: I bought this as I have several slim 2.5" HDDs laying around.
Pros:
1. Nice looking metal enclosure
2. High speed transfer (USB 3.0)
3. Come with cable, and no tools needed for opening
4. Cheap

Cons: It is fairly thin metal (which is great for allowing it to be small form factor) but if you would drop it - it would be toast.

Other Thoughts: SO NICE I BOUGHT A 2ND ONE!!!!

3 out of 5 eggsOk, but very hard to open and close

This review is from: Tek Republic TUE-300 Aluminum Brash 2.5" Black USB 3.0 Hard Drive External Enclosure for 9.5mm 7mm HDD and SSD (Optimized for SSD, Support UASP)

Pros: Simple, small, screwless, USB 3.0, no external power required.

Cons: Being that the case is screwless, it just snaps together. There is no room at all to slide the drive to connect to the SATA header. You have to remove the "insert" install the drive and snap everything together. It's extremely difficult to remove if you every have to swap drives!! So trying to remove the drive requires prying at it which already slightly bent the cover and using a flat screwdriver may scratch the sides! Horrible design on how it goes together. Much prefer the Rosewill style that slides to open and close! Bought this one since it was USB 3.0. Knocking 2 eggs for design. Otherwise, works well.

1 out of 5 eggsNo way to remove drive without damaging case

This review is from: Tek Republic TUE-300 Aluminum Brash 2.5" Black USB 3.0 Hard Drive External Enclosure for 9.5mm 7mm HDD and SSD (Optimized for SSD, Support UASP)

Pros: It's a pretty sleek looking drive and I liked it at first.

Cons: Didn't work with my 64GB SSD so when I went to remove it I discovered it was impossible to do so without destroying the case. I was gently working my spudger along the edges and even with that all the tabs that lock into place snapped off which makes it impossible to put another drive in without the sides falling off the cheap plastic bezel.

Other Thoughts: Only buy if you're sure that the drive works in this case and only if you never want to remove it afterward.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet

This review is from: Tek Republic TUE-300 Aluminum Brash 2.5" Black USB 3.0 Hard Drive External Enclosure for 9.5mm 7mm HDD and SSD (Optimized for SSD, Support UASP)

Pros: This case was purchased to hold my 500GB HDD out of my MacBook Pro. After switching the drive out with a 512GB SSD, I can now use the HDD as a Time Machine Backup. This product looks good, works great, and is very inexpensive.

Cons: If you ever have to replace the drive in the enclosure it will be a bit difficult. I used a couple of pieces of foam to make a spacer for my slim style HDD.
