1 out of 5 eggsDisconnects with xHCI errors

Pros: Small. Fast transfers, when it works.

Cons: Disconnects after a few minutes of copying data.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of them, a year apart, same item in Newegg catalog, look identical, but apparently very different electronics inside. Use them with Linux.

The one received in 5/2013 reports itself as (dmesg)
Product: AS2105
Manufacturer: ASMedia
This works fine with 640GB-1TB disks, transfer speed is only limited by the disk.

I bought the second in 5/2014 and it shows as:
Product: Ext. HDD
Manufacturer: ARCTIC
This one stops responding after copying data for a minute or so and disconnects from the USB bus with xHCI errorrs. Not usable.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Small, Aluminum, No Tools Needed.

Cons: DOA. Windows 7 unable to connect.

Other Thoughts: Too many reviews noted similar problems. I should have read the reviews before buying. I now have the hassle of going thru RMA. The product needs alot of work. Very disappointing.

5 out of 5 eggsI Love it...

Pros: Does exactly what I wanted, it's precisely what I needed and (happily) everything I expected. Truly a nice product.

Cons: A bit difficult to open, but I only plan on having to do it once, so I've got that going for me...

Other Thoughts: Just buy the largest SSD you can find on sale (since the extra speed of a top-end drive won't really help you here) fiddle with the cover once, and BANG! Awesome portable storage in a neat little package. Well done Arctic!

3 out of 5 eggsWorks great! For USB 2. Only.

Pros: I bought this to supplement converting my laptop to an SSD. It works as expected over USB 2.

Cons: Over USB 3, it tends to disconnect when under high load, which is obviously not conducive to installing an OS, or actually anything. It's not worth returning or switching out since I mostly got it for the one thing and I did get it done, but da know that before you buy.

For all fairness, I could have also gotten a dud. I dunno.

Other Thoughts: I'm glad it works alright over USB 2, because it let me get done the thing I wanted to do, but the broken USB 3 is kind of lame.

4 out of 5 eggsAddendum to Previous Review

Pros: See previous review

Cons: See previous review

Other Thoughts: When I first reviewed this, I had been using a 5400rpm HDD in it. After using it for a while, I experienced an occasional dropout. I replaced the drive with a 7200rpm HDD and it refused to be recognized by the computer at all. I removed the HDD put the enclosure in a drawer and forgot about it for a few months after that. I recently came across it and was all set to write a scathing review to replace my original one when it dawned on me I had been plugging it into the USB 2.0 port on my notebook. Unlike USB 3.0, USB 2.0 doesn't have enough power to properly run a HDD, especially a 7200rpm HDD. I got a USB 3.0 Y cable (and had a hard time finding it) that has an extra connector to steal power from a second USB 2.0 port and that was all that was needed to get the enclosure working properly with a 7200rpm HDD. Nor did I have any more problems with dropouts after that

One reviewer complained about the use of the USB 3.0 Micro B connector on the case. The reason that was used is a standard USB 3.0 B connector is larger than the thickness of the case and a port for it wouldn't have fit without making the case significantly thicker (not a bad idea if it added more padding).

A common complaint is the included cable is pretty stiff. USB 3.0 cables tend to be a bit stiffer because they have more conductors.

In my previous review, I complained about the plastic sheet used to insulate the HDD's circuit board from the case having to be stuck onto the HDD. When I was putting the HDD back into the enclosure this time, I used double sided cellophane tape to stick the plastic sheet to the cover of the enclosure instead of to the HDD. The manufacturer should have insulated the cover at the factory instead of requiring the user to stick one to the HDD. That is one reason I left my rating at four eggs. The others are it's a bit overpriced for what you get and either a Y cable should have been included (the extra connector can be left unused if unneeded) or a disclaimer should have been in the description saying it will not reliably run a HDD off a USB 2.0 port, if it will run at all.

1 out of 5 eggsNot properly backwards-compatible.

Pros: Attractive design. Slim, light, easy to dismantle and assemble. Clear instructions.

Cons: Not fully compatible with USB spec. It uses a new USB 3.0 micro connector, which per the USB spec is backwards-compatible with USB 2.0 micro connectors. However, when I attempt to use the drive with a USB 2.0 cable, no computer properly detects or can access the drive.

Other Thoughts: Returned for RMA within 24 hours or receiving, due to clear defect or mislabeling. Do not buy this product if you need something backwards-compatible.

5 out of 5 eggsBad USB Cable

Pros: The case was very easy to open up with a jewelers flat head screw driver. The 2.5 inch WD hdd I put in the case slid in with no hassle and didn't slide around at all.I made sure to put the plastic film on the circuit board side of the hdd. Plugged the unit in with a secondary usb cable i had from seagate and it connected with no problem and transferred files at about 110MB/s over USB 3.0.

Cons: The USB 3.0 cord that shipped with the unit is apparently bad, as it would drop the transfer speed to null for a couple seconds and then speed up. Then all of a sudden my Mac said the drive was disconnected incorrectly. Tried to plug it back in and the same thing happened. RESOLVED ISSUE by using a different usb cable.

Other Thoughts: Make sure to purchase another Usb 3.0 Male A to Male B for this unit because the shipping usb cable is so short and cheaply made.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: The stainless steel cover looks very nice and sturdy.

Cons: The enclosure will not stay snapped together. The connector on the enclosure is unlike any others that I have seen, and the cable is difficult to insert. Mine quit working in a few weeks, which is not surprising when the unit will not stay closed so the drive can put stress on the internal connector.

Other Thoughts: I have many other similar enclosures. The weakness in most of them is where the cable plugs into the enclosure. Ultimately the connector doesn't matter much if the unit will not stay closed. The one-piece extruded aluminum tube design seems to be much better for holding everything together, and so far, the best connectors seemed to be the ones that have the large standard USB connector on the enclosure. It doesn't really make much sense to put a tiny connector on the enclosure since there is plenty of space for it (unlike a telephone). The standard USB connector are pretty beefy.
