BFG Tech GS-550 550W ATX12V V2.2 / EPS12V V2.8 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply

BFG proves once again that they have their finger on the pulse of the gaming community. The GS-550 is a highly efficient power supply at a reasonable price. They wrapped the whole thing in a black chrome finish that will enhance the look of any gaming rig.

They recognized that gamers need stable power that’s why this is a dual +12V rail system. That keeps power balanced across all components, even if you load all the connectors. Which would be hard to do since there are 2xPCIe, 4xMolex, 4xSATA and 1xFloppy. All of the cables are sleeved for better air flow in the case and easier cable management.

The 140mm intake fan keeps air moving over the internal components to increase both efficiency and product life. Thermal Control Technology regulates the fan speed to deliver the optimal balance between fan noise and cooling.

  • newegg ATX12V and EPS12V Compatible Compatible with the ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V v2.8 standards, the BFG Tech GS-550 provides maximum power stability to drive the latest Intel and AMD processors as well as other components for desktop and entry-level sever computer systems.
  • newegg 550W Maximum Power A maximum power of 550W delivers safe, reliable output for high-end PC systems. Two industry-leading independent +12v rails are provided for more stable and safer power output.
  • newegg Highly Efficient Featuring a typical efficiency of up to 85%, the BFG Tech GS-550 power supply saves energy and may even reduce your electric bill!
  • newegg Dual PCI-E Connectors With a 6-pin and a 6+2-pin PCI-E connectors, the BFG Tech GS-550 power supply is ideal for building up a SLI or CrossFire gaming system.
  • newegg 140mm Cooling Fan with BFG Thermal Control Technology The large 140mm intake fan increases overall airflow in the power supply to ensure operation stability. With BFG thermal control technology, the fan slows down during regular operation to reduce unnecessary noise.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: 5 - 6 years still working fine. Only reason I need to upgrade is I need more SATA cables, this PSU only has 4.

Cons: Not enough cables for some people.

4 out of 5 eggsBFG GS V2.2 owner

Pros: I bought one of the V2.2 not this V2.8 from BB in 2009. I did not know the difference between 2 rails and 1 or much at all. I put it in a Gateway GM 5664 (that was discontinued quick) it had a ATI 2400 xt which was to small. I bought the ATI HD4850 about best at that time and put it in with this PSU. I built a PC in 2011, Gigabyte mb 780Gx, Phenom II 955B 3rd stepping, LG Bluray burner, XFX HD5830 and used this power supply.
I am still using this PSU with a Sapphire HD6950, 4 1TB HDDs, same 955B oc to 3.4 Phenom II cpu. I just wanted to say don't know what happened from V2.2 to V2.8 but mine is still going. I am shopping for a new PSU though and will put this one back in the Gateway that I gave my son so he can use the HD5830. Till it dies!!

Cons: no cons

Other Thoughts: I know they went out of business but mine is still going, probably no one will read this!

2 out of 5 eggsdied and fried my mother board

Pros: Decent price for 550w, lasted almost 2 years

Cons: Unit started over heating and things started to go bad. The main fan failed and then it fried my motherboard. I have a feeling that it might have messed up a hard drive that I had thought had crashed, but probably had a spike in energy.

Other Thoughts: I guess you get what you pay for. Next time I will buy a known brand with good reputation.

1 out of 5 eggsSo long BFG

Pros: BFG had a pretty strong reputation but they are pretty much out of business now.

Cons: No warranty from BFG - even on their lifetime warranty products. Out of business.

Other Thoughts: If you can get it for nothing or darn near close to nothing, go for it! Probably a good PSU if you can get it cheap enough so that if it craps out, you are not out money, then it would be a good deal.

2 out of 5 eggsOne whinning PSU

Pros: Fits in the hole. puts out the proper Voltage.

Cons: Makes a whine when under load. More load the more noise.. IT is So Loud that it is embarrassing to have the computer on in mixed company.

Other Thoughts: I got this free for buying the cheap Lian Li Dragonlord case. Buy the more expensive case or sell the BFG in the Paper and buy a real power supply for your Build.

5 out of 5 eggsWell made, has lasted 1.5 years so far.

Pros: Heavy considering others I have had. Satin finish is nice. Hexagonal openings are theorized by many PSU manufacturers to cool more effectively. This was one of the earliest models I have seen to have that. It has lasted me since ~March 2009 with zero problems. Large fan, air passing design makes sense.

Cons: I honestly can't think of any harsh words or regrets for the unit itself. I'm rather sad this company has been liquidated because I thought I found a new under-the-radar PSU mainstay company for future builds. I'm also bummed that what I recall as a 3 year warranty will no longer be honored.

Other Thoughts: Even the packaging was nice. This PSU will be going with my to my new system because I like/trust it so much. I'm also rather surprised to see so many other negative reviews because I have had such a good experience.

Pros: Worked for a while.........POP....POP.....POP..... DIED

Cons: Worked great for almost 2 months then shure enough i was in the middle of a game and everything turned off without warning?? so i open my case make sure everything is connected correctly and the power supply was making a low hisss noise so i unplugged it and waited a few min then plugged it back in and.......POP...POP...POP like a bunch of firecrackers it just died. so i called BFG and this is what they said
BFG IS OUT OF BUSINESS AND DO NOT MAKE ANYTHING ANYMORE..... so now im out a power supply and who knows what the hell else it fried in the process hopfully nothing....
SO STAY AWAY FROM BFG...

5 out of 5 eggsWorked like a charm

Pros: More than enough connections. Functioned well with no noticeable problems during my over 1 year time using it.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I ran this along with overclocked video cards (2 xATI 4850's) and an overclocked processor (AMD 940 BE) and it more than did the job.

1 out of 5 eggsBFG Tech

Pros: Co web site is down only get BFGsystems, told Diamond Media, can not exchange or upgrade video cards and as noted warranties get a good bye letter only. No one seems to know there current address going to attorney general to get them to respond will not answer or respond to tech emails etc.

Cons: Not support company changing hands, out of video card business did see a BFG Systems that appear to make computers with bfg video cards sucks

1 out of 5 eggsstay away!

Pros: none other than cheap power supply

Cons: kiss the warranty goodbyes this company doesn't value their warranty can also has since don't under.

Other Thoughts: buyer beware! this company has since gone under, if you want cheap then this is it otherwise stick with getting another brand this one i can say from my experience sucks cuz i had 6 graphics card by this company along with 3 power supplies. so its a sad day to see them go.
