1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It's a standard KVM switch

Cons: This thing sucks. I had problems with quality from the get go. First was the poor image to my monitor, second was the occasional blackout from some unknown glitch, and about 5 months after purchasing this thing, it just completely crapped out on me. Look for another brand all together.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback on our SV231USB KVM switch. We wish to apologize for the issue you experienced, and we would like to help resolve it.

When it comes to poor image quality on monitors attached to a KVM, there are a few potential causes depending on the current setup.

For the connections between the computers and the KVM, or between the KVM and the monitors, it is best to avoid using any form of display adapters, or to make sure the video signal is adapted as close to the source as possible. It is also best to ensure the cables are secured properly. Additionally, are you utilizing the cables that arrived with the KVM or are you connecting third party cables?

If the video issue affects both computers and no adapters are being used, then it would be best to try connecting the same monitor and VGA cable directly to one of the computer systems, to see if it may be an issue with the cable or monitor.

If the cables test fine directly to a computer, and video quality issues are only present when hooked up to the KVM switch, then your unit may be faulty. If this is the case, we would be happy to replace it via the product's three year warranty, so please feel free to contact our technical support team for further assistance, and kindly reference case number 303-239580.

Thank You,

3 out of 5 eggsGood Product but didn't last

Pros: Functions properly, no set up required, switches correctly, no operational problems

Cons: USB failed after a short time. Buying my second StarTech KVM switch tonight. Wished it would have lasted longer.

Other Thoughts: Overall, a good product, disappointed it didn't last longer before it crapped out

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well for laptops

Pros: I use this for several Windows laptops and I like the manual transfer. My USB mouse and keyboard work well with this device as well as a USB drive for file transfers. Speed is sufficient for the drive, not blazing fast but OK.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Needs External power, includes cables (6 feet long)

5 out of 5 eggsThis unit really works well

Pros: This thing just works like advertised. I've had to work on computers with both DVI and VGA, and with an adapter on DVI it always works.

Cons: Only one USB port for keyboard and mouse makes this ideal for wireless keyboard and mouse that together use one USB dongle. If you have a separate wired keyboard and mouse you may have to switch the mouse from computer to computer or have an extra mouse that will have to be connected each time separately from the KVM.

Other Thoughts: If you don't care about the one USB per computer switching, then you will really enjoy the performance of this little device.

5 out of 5 eggsSo Far So Good

Pros: Sturdy metal case. Easy to hook up. No problem switching on the fly between PC's. No special settings were required in BIOS. In general, I like the higher quality and sturdiness of StarTech products.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsMonitor Switching

Pros: Excellent product for my earlier uses.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: It did what it was supposed to. Did not have DVI function. I bought a Rosewill KVM swith later that had a DVI connector.

4 out of 5 eggsBest I Could Find

Pros: If you are looking for a switch that works with your wireless mouse and keyboard, get this one. I have been looking through dozens of these kvms and this had the best rating (even among more expensive models). Love the fact that when you boot the attached systems windows will sense a proper screen resolution and not revert back to 800x600.

Cons: None yet.

3 out of 5 eggsAlmost there

Pros: Works with my wireless usb mouse, and my wired usb keyboard.

Cons: Takes ~15 seconds for mouse and keyboard to activate once I switch to Windows 7. That feels like a very long time to me while I'm waiting.

Other Thoughts: I switch between win 2k and win 7. The switch to win 2k is quick; video, mouse and keyboard work immediately without delay. When switching to win 7 the video works immediately, but the mouse and keyboard take 15 seconds.
I have found no work-around for my issue on the web.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome KVM

Pros: It does what is says. I'm setting up hardware firewalls on this thing and the connection and switching is flawless. The unit itself is solid and the cables are not proprietary, Startech costs more but it is worth it.

Cons: NONE!, buy this item!
