5 out of 5 eggsNice little box

Pros: Bought this box to plug into the vga port on my netbook to watch videos on a CRT TV. Works like a charm using s-video out. Would recommend for this kind of setup.

Cons: You need a few seconds the first time through to push the front buttons into the correct confirguration. Need to resize the video signal from the box every once and a while after powering on to fit right to the screen - only a minor inconvenience that comes up from time to time.

Other Thoughts: Not sure how the video would turn out over a HDTV... Don't lose the remote - necessary for tweaking the output signal...

3 out of 5 eggsWorks Great - Sorta

Pros: Once you get around the Cons I mentioned below - issues that probably won't affect many people - this is a FIVE star device.

It works as advertised. This will not allow you to play Far Cry over your TV set, but if you want to watch Netfix online videos on your living room TV, put this device between your laptop and TV and BOOM...excellent. Works great for YouTube/ videos. Works great for any videos you can play over your PC including, in my case, the videos I take with my digital camcorder (post-editing).

I might just fire up the old You Don't Know Jack party trivia games and see how they play over this device. I expect that it will be at least as good as whatever video card with TV-Out I was using all those years ago. Having those go in the living room is a blast.

Cons: Intended to use device with my Lenovo ThinkPad T61 Laptop.

Cable that came with the device was no good. I RMA'd the device and the same thing happened again. Inserting cable into laptop VGA-out port caused laptop to essentially short out - requiring the removal/re-insertion of the laptop battery to get it to power on again(!).

Before sending back the second RMA (for good), I called the manufacturer tech support for the heck of it. They said it was a known issue with some laptops and that there was no solution yet. At least they owned up to it and didn't start trying to suggest there was something wrong with my Lenovo (and the other Lenovos upon which I tested the same cable with the same bad results).

The cable in question, as it turns out, is a standard "VGA Extension" (Male one end/Female on other end). I had a bunch of those laying around. Swapping out the cable fixed the problem.

This is the reason for the lost stars in my review.

Other Thoughts: VGA Extension cables are pretty common. The I.T. guy at your place of work probably has a ton of them laying around (since everything is DPMI, now). They're not too expensive. So, if you run into this problem that I had (manufacturer said it was some Lenovo and some Dell laptops) and have reasonable access to a replacement cable, go for it. This is a great device.

If you're using a laptop, I recommend purchasing what is essentially a cable used to hook your MP3 player into your stereo. This will allow your laptop Audio-Out to go over your TV. I purchased this cable, but it is now a "deactivated item" on NewEgg: "MONSTER 7 ft. 3.5mm to RCA iCable for iPod and iPhone Model AICIP7".

Lastly, when you're tuning the device (setting screen position), USE THE REMOTE. So much easier.
