3 out of 5 eggsnot bad, works, no problems

Pros: Works fine for housing an ide drive. No problems for over a year, the case itself is sturdy.

Cons: It would be difficult to swap often and maybe risky. There's also a small wire inside that I made sure not to get pinched between the drive and the case when assembling it; I can see that being a problem. The insides aren't great, it really isn't for swapping drives in and out of a lot. Its also too expensive at 50 dollars, that's why I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 4. I think I got mine for 29.99 and that's not bad.

1 out of 5 eggs10 Turn-ons

Pros: Easy to install hard drive. Worked fine when it worked.

Cons: I used this enclosure with a 1TB hard drive for backup. I do not backup very often. I probably only energized it about 10-12 times in 2 years. Checking voltages at the hard drive plug terminals, it would appear that the 5 volt regulator chip has died. Very poor life.

1 out of 5 eggsTotal Garbage

Pros: Pretty blue light

Cons: Looks nice, but the way this thing is put together is just totally useless. Taking it apart and putting a drive in is non-intuitive at best and an accident prone liability in most cases.

There are a lot of better enclosures out there, buy one of them instead.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Looks Nice. Probably okay for lower capacity IDE drives

Cons: Windows detected a 2TB SATA drive in this enclosure as an unrecognizable partition. Removed and connected to a Thermaltake Enclosure, works fine. Removed and connected directly via internal SATA, works fine. StarTech's specs page claims it supports up to 4TB drives, but other reviwers say the actual capacity is 1TB.

StarTech Support's solution to this is to "format the drive, then everything will be fine."

Inside of the enclosure is very cramped and flimsy. As others have noted, the SATA port is oriented wrong, such that you have to put a 180' twist in a 2 inch SATA cable to connect it to a hard drive. I broke the plastic tab off the internal SATA connection the first time I tried to disconnect a drive.

Total garbage.

2 out of 5 eggsWould have been nice...

Pros: Sturdy and nice looking.

Cons: Power supply hogs two outlet positions. No external sata port. Why the blue led power indicator? Something less intrusive would be nicer.

Other Thoughts: Would have been nice to know that this enclosure has a max capacity of 1TB. The drive I ordered with it is a 1.5TB, so the computer recognized it, and installed it, but wouldn't show up on the computer devices or drives. No way to initialize the drive. Either have to get a 1TB drive or another enclosure to use the drive received. They could have mentioned this in their specs. I believe the specs say it has an aluminum housing, it is steel, which is no problem, maybe better.

1 out of 5 eggsStarTech InfoSafe UNI3510U2 Aluminum 3.5" Black USB 2.0 to IDE SATA External Hard Drive Enclosure

Pros: Nice looking poor made aluminum box. a lot of plastic in and out. Item keep overheating, shuts off itself, needs to be power on again, so xp can see it. didnt worked well with xp, very short connection wires inside the box, very hard to connect ide&sata so that the connectors on the board and the wires itself don't break when you lay your HD in place

Cons: newegg restocking fee

4 out of 5 eggsNice enclosure but cumbersome

Pros: Seems sturdy. Lots of room inside. Leaves plenty of room to access jumper pins on the drive without removing the drive. Accepts IDE (pata) and SATA drive, so it's nice when transitioning to a new computer with a stack of old drives. Nice D-ring on IDE data cable. Claims to be Linux compatible, and it is (I plugged the fresh drive into an Ubuntu machine and formatted to EXT2 via USB).

Cons: Power brick is wide and long, making it difficult to find space on my surge protector. The SATA cable was too short and required a 180-degree twist for my WD drive. The SATA cable was barely long enough to fit, and, even so, it now looks like it wants to pull out of its connector. The manufacturer should have oriented the enclosure's SATA connector 180-degrees to avoid this situation, or supplied a longer or differently configured cable. In fact, the instructions show the connector at a different orientation, and the instructions also shows the power connectors in a different location. A stray piece of tape inside the new enclosure.

Other Thoughts: If you expect to frequently exchange disks inside this enclosure, think again. Although there's plenty of room, the process is more cumbersome than with other enclosures. Looks like it's sturdy and will last a while, so I'm satisfied. I've owned other, cheaper enclosures that didn't last long.

2 out of 5 eggsBad SATA design

Pros: Not sure what to write here, the IDE works well and the power works.

Cons: The SATA cable that comes with this unit is worthless and it is very short and must completely twist around in order to attach to the drive as designed. Cheap SATA pins housing broke off even as I was trying to be careful due to the design.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat!

Pros: Nice form factor. Simple design. Doesn't appear to get too hot. Plenty of room inside for the IDE/SATA cables to overlap without being too squished. No limitations on hard disk capacity.

Cons: The blue base can get pretty bright at night with the lights off.

Other Thoughts: Works perfectly with a 1TB SATA ext3 disk in Gentoo Linux.
