4 out of 5 eggsExactly what I needed

This review is from: StarTech UNIDOCK2U USB to SATA IDE Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5in or 3.5in HDD

Pros: Did exactly what i wanted, which was to be able to go through an old array of drives and see which ones worked, and which ones might have old data on them to salvage.

Cons: 1 IDE drive wouldn't even spin up, but there is a good chance that this was the drives fault. Another IDE drive could not be recognized, but considering it was an old 10 gig drive I wasn't too worried.

Other Thoughts: Overall it did everything I wanted. I wish the connections for the IDE drives weren't so jenky. Just cords out this side. But this didn't effect the performance at all.

2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work with all IDE drives

This review is from: StarTech UNIDOCK2U USB to SATA IDE Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5in or 3.5in HDD

Pros: Sleek, looks good, reads SATA and most IDE Drives

Cons: I bought this for one specific purpose, to access an IDE hard drive. My external HD case became non-functional once I lost the power adapter. I pulled the WD 160GB hard drive out of it and planned to just use this docking station to access the drive while using my laptop. THE DOCKING STATION WOULD NOT ACCESS THE DRIVE. I tried numerous SATA drives and even other IDE drives and it worked fine. It just would not work with the WD 160GB drive I needed to access. I ended up having to crack open my desktop and install the drive inside it. The drive works fine and I could access it once it was installed in the desktop, just wouldn't work with this docking station.

Other Thoughts: Newegg is great about returns so I can't be mad at them. they took care of the refund no problem.

3 out of 5 eggsWestern Digital OK but Seagate a big NO

This review is from: StarTech UNIDOCK2U USB to SATA IDE Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5in or 3.5in HDD

Pros: It works great copying from a Western Digital IDE drive BUT...

Cons: Won't work with either 3.5" Seagate IDE drives I own. Luckily the data I was wanting to recover was on a WD drive.

Other Thoughts: It would be nice if it used USB3 instead of 2. It takes a while at USB2 speed.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Device

This review is from: StarTech UNIDOCK2U USB to SATA IDE Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5in or 3.5in HDD

Pros: This is my second Star Tech docking station, my fist still holding up after connecting several hundred hard drives but can't be caught without one. My job is data recovery and this device allows me to try repairs to a drive and get it running just long enough to get the data off the damaged drive.

Cons: The data and power connectors for ATA drives could have been longer.....Just saying

Other Thoughts: For those that have burned out hard drives with this device.....Just because they say hot swapable does not mean you can make your connection with the power to the docking station on, YOU MUST PRESS THE POWER BUTTON ON TOP OF THE STATION TO TURN POWER OFF BEFORE MAKING YOUR CONNECTION, then press button to power up the drive.

3 out of 5 eggsAnything But Seagate

This review is from: StarTech UNIDOCK2U USB to SATA IDE Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5in or 3.5in HDD

Pros: Fits right by my machine at work and its very easy to dock/undock.

Cons: This thing will NOT work with most Seagate hardrives. I have 2 of these and i have the issues with both so its not my device (unless a batch of them are that way) So frustrating because dell seems to mostly deal with Seagate and when i want to image a drive i have to go with my old trusty hard drive connectors.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Product

This review is from: StarTech UNIDOCK2U USB to SATA IDE Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5in or 3.5in HDD

Pros: Easy installation, just plugged in to usb port, dropped in drive or plugged it in to cables and it found the drive's right away. You can have both IDE and SATA plugged in at the same time. This will even transfer files between the IDE and SATA drives at the same time making it easy to copy all files from one to another. Worked on XP and Win 7 machines.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Cant recommend this enough for any one that needs to transfer files to or from old or new HD's. This would be a great tool for any repair person needing to transfer files quickly.

4 out of 5 eggsSatisfied

This review is from: StarTech UNIDOCK2U USB to SATA IDE Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5in or 3.5in HDD

Pros: Worked as advertised with both SATA and IDE drives.

Cons: The pins on the molex connector are loose and it's difficult to plug/unplug from the drive or the docking station - pins don't align. If not for this, I'd have given it 5 eggs.

Other Thoughts: It would be a real plus to include a connector/adaptor for optical drives.

3 out of 5 eggsIs this the best they can do?

This review is from: StarTech UNIDOCK2U USB to SATA IDE Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5in or 3.5in HDD

Pros: SATA works

Cons: "IDE Docking" is misleading.

Other Thoughts: Why don't these companies put out an ACTUAL IDE docking station without resorting to some lazy cop out mechanism? There are cheap generic Chinese manufactured IDE docks that simply don't work because of drive shoddy engineering and virtually no driver support but still have proven that it is definitely doable given enough care... think about all the IDEs that are collecting dust that can be put to good use with the convenience of plug and boot... come on guys.
