5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive Enclosure for xBox One

Pros: I paired this with a WD Black drive 2TB 7200 RPM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236624)
This is fast and works great

Cons: None that I can think of or experienced.

Other Thoughts: This is a great price with the drive compared to other pre-made devices available. With the combines price, I could find a 1TB external storage and probably only 5400 RPM for the same I paid for these two.

1 out of 5 eggsclaims large drive support, it does not

Pros: Solid construction, easy to assemble and still it is inexpensive. The two screws screw into brass screws rather than into plastic.

Cons: I shopped the Startech website for a drive with fan and 4tb drive support. I settled on this one and came to newegg to purchase it.

Now every 4TB drive I install is not seen by the equipment (dvd player).

When i connect the enclosure to a windows 7 pc, the drive is not seen in windows explorer, the windows disk management tool does display the drive, but with 2 partitions, with the first drive being 2TB and the second partition being the remainder of the space.

I re-checked the website and Startech still says "Large capacity drives (tested with up to 4TB) can be used to greatly enhance your computer's storage/backup capabilities.", this is on the main product page while Newegg shows it as "Up to 2TB". Except I did not check the Newegg page when i selected the enclosure.

So far this enclosure has scrambled 2 drives. I was able to recover the first drive ok, now i need to try the second drive.

I was using this with a Toshiba PH3400U-1I72.

Other Thoughts: Newegg knows more about the product than the manufacturer?

1 out of 5 eggsReplacement does not work

Pros: Same as the last one - metal case, easy to install

Cons: Does not work with 2TB drive. It refuses to read the partition table correctly on a working 2TB drive. Tried a 320GB drive and it works. Returning because I want to use the 2TB drive.

Other Thoughts: Could not figure out how to edit previous review.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Easy to install drive, aluminum case.

Cons: DOA, I've been using a hard drive using a USB2 external adapter and wanted to put it in a USB3 enclosure. When I put the drive in the case, it could not read the partition table correctly no matter how I tried to do it. Went back to the old adapter and it worked fine again.

Other Thoughts: Going to try another one and see if it's better.

5 out of 5 eggsHeavy, but very nice looking.

Pros: Very straightforward to get up and running. Remove 4 screws slide and lift the panel off, flip up a HD hold down bracket, and slide the HD in. Getting the hard drive connectors to line up was a little tricky but a little patience goes a long way. The enclosure looks great once powered up with a blue led that lights up a bar on the front. The fan is a nice touch and should keep a hot drive fairly cool and it is silent (at least I can't hear it over my PC anyway).

Performance wise it is fast, the usb 3.0 is worth it. I have an old 750gb WD (I think it is a black) that performs pretty close as if it were in the case hooked to a SATA port. HD Tach quick bench gave me 207.0 mb/s burst, random access of 13.3 ms, and an average read of 80.7 mb/s. Not bad considering how old the drive is and it may be from before they even started the colored editions.

The style is nice and I like the weight. It does feel kinda heavy and I can see how that might be a hindrance to some. It is definitely not super portable and could easily double as a bookend. In my case a it will hold up my console games that are displayed!

Cons: On the con side of things I would honestly say the weight would easily be an issue for some folks, though you are putting in a full hard drive and it has a fan, AND it is a metal case. Personally I don't mind and they are all positives for me.

The only real con for me was that it was a little tricky to get the drive connected. I found it best to go at it like a laptop drive where you kind of angle the drive in ever so slightly and make the connection, and then push the drive down to seat it in the housing. I must emphasize an ever so slight angle, I don't think there is any going back from a broken SATA connector on a drive of any kind.

Other Thoughts: Glad I grabbed this one. I am a fan of StarTech products. I also have the small 2.5 inch usb 3 enclosure as well. I've also used other products and so far they always seemed to fit my needs and are high quality.

5 out of 5 eggsGood product

Pros: Works good out of the box. Plug and play on Win 7 pro 64 bit.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I've had lots of failures on external drive assemblies due to cheap hardware and faulty manufacturing. This one worked out of the box and seems well built. Windows has no trouble recognizing and using it.

5 out of 5 eggsBest of the Enclosures I've Had

Pros: Easy to open, just two screws that includes mounting the drive. Just open the case and the drive is held by friction. There is a lever that wedges the drive in place. Fro lower profile drive there are spacers included to make sure it is held firmly in place. The I/O performance is good over the USB 3.0 link. I'm not using the fastest of drive but it is close to the expected throughput. The fan is very quiet but not silent. This drive was getting quite hot in the previous enclosure I had been using.

Cons: I'm curious how the friction fit will age. I'm using it as a permanent drive housing but if your looking to change drives often this may become and issue. I is larger that other enclosures with fans I looked at. As I said the fan is quiet but not silent which can be a drawback for some users.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: -Quiet fan cools well and can be turned off.
-Works well. Good compatibility.
-3TB supported. Perhaps more.
-Easy to assemble.
-Nice fit and finish.

Cons: I initially tried a Seagate 3TB 7200RPM 6Gb/s drive. The enclosure runs it at 1.5Gb/s according to HWInfo. This is a bottleneck. It wouldn't transfer more than about 115MB/s and this drive can move a good bit more than that on a SATA2/3 connection. A slower 5400-5900RPM drive is more appropriate for this enclosure.

I tried updating the firmware (Asmedia ASM1051) but that didn't change the speed.

5 out of 5 eggsSupports Higher Capacity Drives Than Spec'd

Pros: The specs say that this can only support up to 2TB drives, but I have used both a 3TB WD Black drive and a 4TB Seagate Hybrid Drive in it with no issue.

I use this mostly for recovery of files on systems that have crashed but have intact hard drives and to migrate data, and the ease to opening and replacing the drive is unmatched.

Solid Construction, and an On/Off switch for the fan is nice too.

Cons: The rubber feet that come with this are kind of a joke. You only get 3 and the adhesive fails really quickly if moved frequently. I went to Lowes and found a solution that works great and only costs a couple dollars. Part # 0054075.

Other Thoughts: The only reason I don't detract an egg for the one con I have here is that the enclosure exceeds the capacity specs and I've found it to be such a great product I purchased a second one.

I'm also using these in all my future backup drive deployments for workstations and small business servers.

1 out of 5 eggsWon't stay connected

Pros: Umm... looks good? If you're into super bright blue lights that is.

Cons: Won't stay connected to Xbox One via USB3. Enclosure worked great for about one week and then started to get periodic drops from the X1. It would reconnect immediately but even a split second disconnect will crash your game. Unfortunately I already threw out the box since enclosure was working for a week so no RMA option. I just own a nice paperweight.

Other Thoughts: No idea if it fairs better at USB 2 but at least with USB 3 stay away.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Heath,

Thank you for reviewing our hard drive enclosure, and we apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced.

A few good troubleshooting steps to try would be to see if you get the same behavior in another system/computer, and also trying another hard drive in the enclosure.

If you find you are experiencing the same issue with other 3.5” hard drives and when using the enclosure with another system, this likely points to a fault in the SAT3510BU3.

Please take a moment to get in touch with our support team and reference case number 303-205084. We would be interested to know the results of your troubleshooting and if necessary, we can replace the enclosure via the product’s 2 year warranty.

It should also be noted that the original packaging is not required for an RMA to take place.

Thank you, and we hope to hear from you soon!
