4 out of 5 eggsGreat Time Saver!

Pros: -Standalone, no software needed
-Simple, just plug it in, drop in the HHDs, and press the buttons
-Works on IDE, SATA, as well as both 3.5" and 2.5"
-Has LED indicator for status/time left on duplicate
-Dependable (has been used heavily for 2 years and is going strong)

Cons: -Kinda chunky
-Location of source (drive 2), and destination (drive 1) is kind of counterintuitive
-Not the fastest in the world, but it still works!

Other Thoughts: I've been using this particular unit at work for about 6 months, but it has been in use here for over 2 years. We use them to duplicate a setup from 40gb (we have old computers, OK?) to larger drives to try and extend the life of our computers.
Yes, if you copy from a small drive to a larger one, it does make a partition. Luckily, that can be fixed easily with any partition manager software. Just extend the partition to fill up the unallocated space!
To give you guys some idea of speed, I just finished duplicating a 500gb 2.5" HHD, ~7200RPM. Both drives were identical. I timed it at 68 minutes 32 seconds. No, this isn't a speed demon, but it works well, is dependable, and simple. I am actually about to order one for home use, so yes, I would recommend this to anyone!

5 out of 5 eggsLife Saver

Pros: This Device is a Lifesaver. Works Great for pulling data off a crashed PC. Works great as a Duplicator as well. I own two of these, one at work and i keep one at home as well. I have never used the eSata, only USB, so i cant comment on that. Never had a failure and use it almost weekly for the past couple of years.

Cons: None that i am aware of. Others have said its slow, but when Duplicators can fetch you hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars, what do you expect for something thats less than $70?

5 out of 5 eggsLove it!

Pros: Great standalone hard drive duplicator.
Huge time saver.
Works wonderfully.

Cons: Only two bays.
Could be a little faster.
Power plug is a pinned plug and not a solid pin plug.
Not many options.
If target HDD is bigger than source, it will partition the target with two separate partitions. Kind of a pain and no way to combine the partitions afterward.

Other Thoughts: I've purchased and used this duplicator at a couple of jobs so far and I love this thing. I was able to duplicate one hard drive(80GB 7200RPM) to 5 separate drives(160GB 7200RPM) in about 3 hours when doing so back-to-back. This thing works amazingly and cuts time down nearly 100%. I would strongly recommend getting this duplicator. You do not need software or anything to duplicate. You just plop two hard drives into this device and press the copy button. It's that simple! For those of you who wish to copy IDE(PATA) hard drives, STARTECH does sell adapters for those drives that fit into this duplicator. This thing is a huge time saver, although, I do wish it was a little bit faster, but hey for the price and what it does, I'm perfectly happy with the way it is. This is one of my favorite pieces of technology in my workshop!

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected

Pros: It makes it very easy to add a drive to your system without restarting. I teach computer repair, so we do this often when working on a customer's computer. It also allows us to easily move everything to a larger drive in one click.

Cons: Occasionally, we run into a PATA drive that needs to be recovered or duplicated to a new drive. This device is SATA only. Would be nice if it came with a PATA to SATA adapter.

Other Thoughts: This device works well, and I would recommend it. We have used it on dozens of drives with only a single blue screen event (probably related to the drive). One drive that was clicking, was not recognized by our recovery system when connected to the mobo, but when placing it into the Stardock, with a few cyclings, we were able to read it long enough to recover data. Kudos for that!

5 out of 5 eggsStill working fine for 2+ years

Pros: eSata + USB; Works for at least 3TB (if format correctly). Auto spin down when idle more than a few minutes; help pro-long HD life. Didn't notice any thermal issue and fanless.

Cons: None; other than usb 2.0 data rate. usb 3.0 wasn't complete during time of purchase. Not cheap.

4 out of 5 eggsOops . . .

Pros: My last review should be for SATADOCK22UE, not this. Stuff about StarTech still applies, though.

Cons: see other review

Other Thoughts: see other review

4 out of 5 eggsStarTech RMA Just Fine Thank You

Pros: I have 2 of these--one at home; one at work-- and they work very well in a work bench environment.

Cons: One power button quit working after about 9 months on one unit.

Other Thoughts: I Contacted Startech, and they gave me an RMA that included shipping both ways! I received the replacement today, and so far so good!

I've purchased several StarTech products over the years, and this is only the second time I had to contact their support. In both cases they made it right, and I am very happy. I found them friendly, responsive, and easy to deal with. Something like working with Newegg :-)

Cons: Powers up, but disks do not spin. The power brick has 12 and 5 vdc present.

Other Thoughts: won't buy this junk again.

3 out of 5 eggsMixed feelings

Pros: This device works well. My CoolerMaster case has an eSata port on the front as well as the back, so I have been able to use this dock fully, and at eSata speeds. Although I haven't measured transfer speeds, I have been happy with my transfers.

Cons: One of my ports simply stopped working. I can power it up, but it knows nothing of the drive. The other still works fine.

If I power down a drive while running Windows (Server 2008r2), within 5 minutes or so my system will bluescreen. My motherboard is an Asrock X58 Extreme. This is very annoying.

Other Thoughts: Overall, worth the money to me; I now have to choose between replacing it with another of the same type, or going with USB3, to alleviate the hotswap problem.
