3 out of 5 eggshaving issues with USB 3.0

This review is from: StarTech SATDOCKU3SEF USB 3.0 eSATA Hard Drive Docking Station with Cooling Fan

Pros: Works in USB 2.0 port. Does not disconnect/reconnect like it does in USB 3.0 port. Ran a multi-hour backup without errors.

Cons: Sort of works in USB 3.0 port. Seems to timeout (and then reconnect) very frequently. Then Windows asks me how I want to use the new drive I just connected. Seems to cause backup to abort.

Other Thoughts: Wondering if there is some setting or update to fix USB 3.0 operation. Either for my computer or this device.

5 out of 5 eggsGood for Hot swapping

This review is from: StarTech SATDOCKU3SEF USB 3.0 eSATA Hard Drive Docking Station with Cooling Fan

Pros: Works well with both connection types and I've had no recognition issues when swapping out drives.

Cons: Only has one bay and you have to put some care in alining the drives (both 2.5 and 3.5).

Other Thoughts: This is good for someone that needs to access only one drive at a time with this device, so it is not suggested if you need to access information from multiple drives or cloning drives (unless you have another device to do either with).

1 out of 5 eggsStarTech Doesn't Deliver

This review is from: StarTech SATDOCKU3SEF USB 3.0 eSATA Hard Drive Docking Station with Cooling Fan

Pros: It has a fan, USB 3.0, and eSata

Cons: It doesn't read most of the drives I have. With the drives that do work, they only work for a short period of time and then I lose connection. I know StarTech is a cheap brand, but this unit was not that cheap compared to others and it does not work as promised. Stay away.

3 out of 5 eggsSlightly broken but still works well

This review is from: StarTech SATDOCKU3SEF USB 3.0 eSATA Hard Drive Docking Station with Cooling Fan

Pros: Two connection options, either eSATA or USB 3.0. I'm using eSATA and transfer speeds are wonderful with my 7200 RPM 1 TB Western Digital HDD.

Cons: Materials feel cheap (this does not necessarily mean they are). Fan button simply fell down when pressed down normally, and it does not come back up and I can hear a piece floating around inside if I move the device. HOWEVER, the fan still works perfectly, and if I turn the speed all the way down, the fan turns completely off anyway, so I don't "really" mind the button being broken. Still, because it seems a bit cheaply made and was broken, I felt I should give it an average rating.

Other Thoughts: My friend also has one of these and he said he noticed that eSATA transfers are more consistent while the USB 3.0 transfer rates fluctuated. I have not tested this on my own device.
I have used this only for a couple days, so I cannot vouch for extended use.

5 out of 5 eggsmust have

This review is from: StarTech SATDOCKU3SEF USB 3.0 eSATA Hard Drive Docking Station with Cooling Fan

Pros: Very easy to use and connect
Fast, especially if you use eSATA or you have a true USB 3.0 connection
plug and play

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Originally purchased this for home to use with home server and do system backup of storage to take drive offsite etc.
I also purchased it because the 3 laptops we own all have an eSATA connection so I can do fast COMPLETE backups of the whole system.
It worked great for both of the above and was considerably faster than USB 2 backups.
As a test I took it to work in our PC setup lab and use it to clone an 80GB to 20 or so PC's we had as an project and it only took 8 min on average to clone the whole drive using True Image

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent, critical for long drive ops

This review is from: StarTech SATDOCKU3SEF USB 3.0 eSATA Hard Drive Docking Station with Cooling Fan

Pros: it's fast with USB3 and eSATA, the fan is critically placed for necessary drive cooling. I like this unit best.

SAT2IDEADP is the IDE adapter for this unit. once IDE and power cables placed, will stay that way pretty much to make things easy next time.

the product desc doesn't match the mfr's product desc, this unit handles 4TB drives not just 2TB (or maybe there is just no limit and they stuck on a number). but - this ends up being a plus as far as drive features go!

this is the BEST dock out there as of 11/2013. I have done some looking. drives that in other adapters and docks would overheat, in this unit they stay reasonably cool and don't error out from overheating during long operations.
need to get a 2nd set.

Cons: SAT2IDEADP be careful with the cables on that that they stay inside the well/cavity and not to get the insulation damaged by drive insertion.

understand that if you are using a drive over 2TiB you must not be using MBR you use GPT else you won't see the whole disk.

to use USB 3.0, you must be using at least windows 7/8/8.1 or above. GPT partitioning also means same windows versions.

what I don't know for sure yet is, if you move a GPT disk off of its original controller channel, it is supposed to not work on that new channel (such as on a dock), you have to put it back right where it was. but I need to verify. I have precious data, so I need to verify this myself someday and try with dock vs motherboard. if this does work, then I can do computer repair better. if it doesn't, then I will be recommending 2TB drives from now on.
this may mean that if you format a GPT disk on the dock, it may have to stay on the dock. taking it out and putting in system is worth a try, would love to know for sure. I may give that a try just to see what happens and see if it's restorable if drive is put back...

cables including 12VDC 2A (5.5mm OD 2.1mm ID connector) power adapter cable is all 3' long, which is way too short. you can supplement by purchasing a 6' power adapter or using an extension cord and purchasing longer cables for USB 3.0 and eSATA. although I am unsure how long eSATA can actually go, I think it may not go longer than 2'. would have to read specs to be sure. so there are workarounds. it's a micro USB 3.0 male to USB 3.0 A male cable.
