1 out of 5 eggsBroke second latch

Pros: Moderate price, lightweight, electronically sound.

Cons: Cheap plastic latch with tiny plastic ears that break easily.

Other Thoughts: Both drives go offline when a door is opened. Perhaps this is normal, but it is a nasty surprise.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Frank,

We wanted to reach out to you and apologize for the experience you had with our SAT3520U3R hard drive enclosure.

With most RAID enclosures (not only those manufactured by StarTech.com), the opening of one door will result in the other drives going offline as well. We apologize for this inconvenience.

The product carries a 2 year warranty, and if you prefer, we would like to replace your unit due to the damaged components you noted. Please take a moment to get in touch with our support team and kindly reference case number 303-208170.

You can also respond here and we will be sure to follow up with you.

Thank you,

4 out of 5 eggsDoor opener fragile

Pros: Easy to swap drives (when the door works).
Handles 4T drives.

Cons: After a short time, one of the doors refused to open. Turns out the little plastic hinged lift that you use to open door has two plastic ears on the back of it. One of them broke off. I did not play rough with it. I finally got the door open by using a tiny screwdriver to manipulate the mechanism.

The fan is noisy when on. It does tend to turn on and off at semi-random times (I guess whenever the O/S wants to chat).

Other Thoughts: I'm having lots of trouble with my Ubuntu 14.10 system playing well with USB3. Not the device's fault, but something to be aware of. Sometimes rear ports work better than front ones, updating BIOS might help, etc.

I contacted the company once about this problem, but got no response. I'm trying again.

3 out of 5 eggsDoor stuck, not quiet

Pros: Small, lightweight

Cons: After changing a drive about two dozen times one of the doors refuses to open. I can't figure out how to force it open without breaking the case. I did not abuse it. Poor design.

The fan is not the loudest, but very noticeable. It may be hot-swap but when I remove one drive both drives go offline. Does not work reliably with Ubuntu 14.04.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine

Pros: Works well with data transfers. Easy swap on drives. USB3. Using 4tb seagates in RAID 0.

Cons: As stated before, controller on board causes unit and drives to fall asleep.

Other Thoughts: I don't understand why the other people are freaking out over the drives falling asleep. Yes they do "power down" but when you initiate a file transfer or a file browse it initiates a spin-up on the drives. I am mainly using this as a backup drive, then pulling the drives and storing them. If you're using this as your everyday storage device, you should have just put some drives in your computer and been done with it or in a non-hot swap case.

3 out of 5 eggsAfter some tweaking seems to be working well.

Pros: Simple and quick to install drives.

Small footprint.

USB 3.0

Cons: Power saving mode is automatic and not configurable via hardware or software switches.

Other Thoughts: I've got this attached to a very old Windows Home Server box. This box is a collection of old parts but it has served me well over almost a decade.

One can plug the SAT3520U3R in to a USB 2.0 port. You just have to be sure to use a USB 2.0 cable and NOT the cable that came with the unit.

In the end I ended up writing a simple batch file that adds a single character to a file on the drive. I then used the Windows Task Scheduler to automatically execute this batch file every 3 minutes. This way the unit never automatically powers off.

All in all I think I'm happy with this unit.

1 out of 5 eggsi hate it

Pros: allows two drives to be put into one box

Cons: The drives un-mount and hibernates after 5 minutes, apparently the manufacturer thinks this is cool. I hate it, you need to unplug and re-plug to get the drives mounted again. It does it in linux windows and even mac osx. There is no way to stop this behavior !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Other Thoughts: If I knew it would do this I would have NEVER bought this enclosure !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to send it back for a refund !!!!!!!!
