4 out of 5 eggsgood to have

Pros: This is a great item to have you want a hard drive dock, duplicator, and eraser. The design is not bad has a erase button that is indented on the back the only way to erase a drive is if you stick a pen on the button for a few seconds. Similar to a resetting a router which is good because you can't erase a drive by accident.

Cons: This is device is by no means fast. Took 4 hours to duplicate a 1tb drive and 12 hours to duplicate a 3tb drive. I would recommend putting a drive in and duplicate it overnight.

Other Thoughts: I tested it out on my operating system drive that is 1tb duplicated it and put the new drive in and it worked exactly like the original. So it's great to have if you want a copy of a hard drive that you can just put in your computer in case it crashes.

5 out of 5 eggsMUST-HAVE for every Computer Technician or Enthusiast

Pros: Works beautifully. Lately, I have used it as a way of upgrading our company PCs, with SSD drives. I can put the old and new one, into this device, press a button, and it will duplicate the old drive on to the SSD. I also use this device to erase hard drives that we no longer use, to protect the possible retrievable data. On a day to day basis, I plug this dock into my computer, and use it as a way to have external drives available for the extra storage. This device does not need a computer attached, to function. It will duplicate and erase data, without it being plugged into my computer via USB 3.0.

Cons: Drives have to be the exact same size. It would be great, if when I put in a destination drive that is larger than the source drive, it would intelligently duplicate to the new drive - with the partition expanded, making use of the additional space on the new destination drive.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this product to anyone that deals with hard drive replacement, duplication or erasing of older and smaller hard drives.

2 out of 5 eggsStandalone disk copier Function review, tested not so good.

Pros: Wipes drives in a timely fashion but disk erase is only a single pass erase, so does not suffice for meeting HITECH/HIPAA or other legal requirements for deleting data.
Works well as a hot swap caddy, data transfer speeds are acceptable, and seems reliable, on my USB2 rig.
USB 3.0 rated their site says it is backward compatible with USB 2.0 which is what I have at the moment, and works fine so far.
Shipping was fast, as always.

Cons: Tried cloning about 15 times with several different drives, 80 gig to 80 gig... 80 gig to 120 and 120 to 80 gig combinations. Most drives would not boot after clone, if they did clone they had registry errors and did not function correctly. Ended up getting "Acronis" free from western digital site and doing the cloning with that software, very fast i might add, about 7 minutes to clone 80 gig drives, windows XP-pro systems.
Average user beware after this wipes a drive, you will have to personally reformat it in order to use the drive again, all attempts to clone to a fresh wiped drive has failed.
The user instructions are not clear that the buttons must be held for 3-4 seconds to start cloning or erasing of hard drives, so keep the buttons pressed until you see it change, the erase button is rather hard to depress so keep trying until it works.
Note: all drives that failed duplication with this unit cloned ok with clonezilla and or Acronis, I don't believe drives were the problem.

Other Thoughts: Would you recommend this product to other people? No, as far as recommending this to a friend, id say don't count on it as a reliable duplicator to back up an operating system, its pretty much just a nice hot swap caddie, in my opinion.
If given the choice, would you purchase this product again? No, not for 60 bucks, i think a cheaper 30.00 unit would work just as well.
If there is something about the product you could change, what would it be? Id change the erase button to something easier to press, but still keep it in an off location, to prevent accidental erasing. Install more reliable duplication firm ware, or make it flashable to upgrade it to reliable firm ware that works.

5 out of 5 eggsStandalone disk copier saved my PC first time! There are a few quirks...

Pros: Here are my summary pros:

+ core duplicator function works well if not very fast as a drive copier
+ erase function is a nice, relatively quick function
+ works very well to allow one to upgrade from a small old SATA drive to a newer larger capacity SATA drive
+ verified function up to 3TB as target drive
+ % complete LEDs work well to indicate progress in disk copying or erasure

Cons: Cons & quirks:
- the copy function is not very fast. A 2TB drive took overnight, but the above 160GB clone took about 75 minutes
- USB3 performance not up to other USB3 StarTech SATA drive adapters, but is 50-75% better than USB2
- disk erase is only a single pass erase, so does not suffice for meeting HITECH/HIPAA or other legal requirements for deleting data
- the USB chipset does not pass SMART commands through, so cannot use to validate SMART status
- entire interface MUST have a power reset to switch from duplicator to SATA to USB3 interface
- wish this had the eSATA interface

Other Thoughts: With a hard drive failing on a Windows 7 PC, backups had been failing for over a month and I hadn't noticed. SMART failures were mounting and old external USB2 SATA interface did no better than the PC in reading drive contents without failures. So I took a chance and got this StarTech standalone SATA drive copier and it worked like a charm! Took a 160GB drive Windows 7 image to a 500GB drive in about 75 minutes.

Bottom line: if you need a small number of hard drive cloned, it works well on Windows (NTFS, FAT32) and Linux (ext2, ext3) partitions.

5 out of 5 eggsUse for duplication or wiping drives!

Pros: Can be used for a two port hard drive dock, duplicating drives stand-alone, or wiping drives with zeros stand-alone. No fans, silent. I usually use this device to wipe drives that I will use again. Before I had to pull out an old PC, hook it up to my monitor and keyboard, plug in the drives, find a power cable and plug it in, boot up with DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) over USB, wait for it to finish the wipe, and then finally tear down everything and put all the junk away. Now I just use this tiny box! Mac OS X compatible (tested on my USB 2 Mac Mini with 10.9 Mavericks). No drivers needed. Drives slide in easy.

Cons: The lights are dual purpose depending on what mode you're in: the lights are either showing you what drives it recognizes OR 25/50/75/100% progress through the procedure. It would be nice if there were separate lights for these two important status functions. Does not wipe USB drives.

Other Thoughts: This is the dock that rocks!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Docking Station

Pros: One button press CLONE (sector--by-sector) or WIPE with all zero's.

To clone you press the small green button on the front, to erase you press the green recessed button on the back for about 3-4 seconds.

Cons: None that I have found.

Other Thoughts: I really like this device, I use this quite often to wipe my HDD's with all zeros. This makes it really handy if for some reason you need to wipe a drive. For example, you don't need to use the DD command to wipe with all zeros when writing a file with DD-WRT.

Also, I've had a few WD Red HDD's go bad and it was nice to be able to wipe the failed RAID drive with all zeros prior to sending it back to the vendor for replacement.

Naturally you can do this with a PC but it's very nice to be able to just press a recessed button and not have to deal with Linux or other wiping software.

The cloning process has worked for me flawlessly as well, it's not as fast as the other Startech dock out there SDOCK2U33RE (22 GB/min) but it's quite nice... I also own the SDOCK2U33RE and it has a very fast copy/clone speed, but the other unit is lacking an ERASE feature...

As for the other reviews stating that the drive must be powered off or drives not being detected, I can't comment on this as I don't use these devices plugged into USB 3.0. I pretty much use these devices as stand alone.

If you need to frequently do drive wipes or cloning without the use of a PC this is a very nice machine at an excellent pricepoint.

5 out of 5 eggsEggcellent...

Pros: Awesome. I don't know why I did not buy this device years ago.

You can also do a single pass wipe. Yahoo...

Cons: -

Other Thoughts: Make sure the target drive is same or bigger than source.

4 out of 5 eggsGood investment

Pros: Great device. Use this more than I thought I would. I purchased this initially as a HDD dock, but I find I am using the duplicator and eraser functions a lot! It's nice to hit the button and then walk away, come back in a bit and the clone is done. It sure beats putting the drives in a PC or using some mess of cables to hook everything up.

Speeds are pretty good when cloning and erasing disks. Speeds are also quite good when using as a dock.

Cons: I don't like that you have to unplug the dock from your PC to use the clone / erase function. Also every once in a while I get an issue when plugging two drives into the dock they don't register on the PC and I have to reboot the dock. Other than that it's a good device, a little pricey, but it was well worth it for me
