4 out of 5 eggsGreat but could be better

Pros: Attached USB3 cable in a portable enclosure that's decently priced. Got for a backup on big files i need to keep.

Plug and play and even comes with it's own little slightly magnetic screwdriver. (the magnetic part is awesome because i always seem to drop the small screws and i can never find them again, lost in the void of my carpet.)

Cons: Could be a better mounting system. It just sits in there with a pad at the opposite end of the connector to hold the drive in place which lets the drive rattle against the front and back. At least put more padding on the sides and maybe even on the top to hold it in place better.

Other Thoughts: Not my first starTech external enclosure and certainly not the last. Pretty handy attached cable makes it portable and have recommended it to many friends already.

1 out of 5 eggsSeveral failed after less than one week with SSDs inside

Pros: Integrated USB cable

Cons: High failure rate. Tiny screws required for assembly.

Other Thoughts: Could have been a great product in theory. Badly executed due to high failure rate.

Pros: none

Cons: never worked from day one. same exact thing as other reviews

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to review our product. We are sorry to hear you are having issues with the enclosure – we would like to offer some help.

We have currently identified a potential issue that is affecting some units; if the device is being used in UASP mode, there can be a drop in connection. If this is what is affecting you, we sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and rest assured we are working to swiftly solve the problem.

In the event the UASP issue does not pertain to your unit, you may need to format the hard drive you are using (particularly if it is a brand new unit), before it is usable on your system. This procedure varies between operating systems, and we would be more than happy to help you accomplish this.

Also, if you are installing a hard drive that was previously installed in another system, you will need to ensure that the drive is not defective as well.

We are always here to help with our free lifetime technical support. If this did not help with the problems you are having, or if you wish to inquire about the status of the UASP issue, please get in touch with us and kindly reference case # 303-200803. We would be interested to know the model number of the hard drive you installed as well.

Thank you for your understanding.

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: The attached USB 3.0 is a nice touch, more companies should consider using them

Cons: The drive would disconnect constantly! At first the file transfers would move VERY quickly thanks to USB 3.0 and then after only a few minutes the speed would abruptly drop down to 0, the drive would disappear from the explorer window, and a warning message would pop up. I switched the drive over to another 3.0 enclosure (an Arctic I use for my personal backups) and it worked flawlessly for a couple hours!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Joshua,

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback on our S2510BMU33CB. We apologize for the issue you experienced, and would like to help resolve it.
There a few things we can offer to narrow down where the issue may be. Firstly we would recommend trying this enclosure in a different USB port, and a different computer.
If you are still having disconnection issues after this, the enclosure is likely faulty and we would like to send you a replacement as soon as possible. Please reference case#: 303-178526 should you contact us.
We are always here to help with our free lifetime technical support, feel free to contact us at any time.

You can also reply here and we will be sure to follow up with you.

Thank You,

2 out of 5 eggsGood..while it lasted (2 days)

Pros: Looks good, worked great...for 2 days.

Cons: The StarTech enclosure stopped working after 2 days. Now it goes into a continuous loop of being recognized in Windows then dropping out. I changed the SSD in the enclosure with another SSD and got the same results. I tried both SSDs in a different manufacturer's enclosure and they both work fine, so this leads me to believe that the StarTech enclosure definitely has a problem.

4 out of 5 eggsworks well

Pros: Works. Quick transfers even without UAS. Pretty sturdy usb cable. Included screwdriver is magnetized.

Cons: Cheap construction, but don't expect much at this price point.

Other Thoughts: I needed something to upgrade a laptop to SSD, and it worked without a hitch.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfection.

Pros: - Correct Transfer Speeds
- Easy to Install
- Cheap
- USB 3.0
- Built in Cable
- Nice Wrap around Cable
- Phillips Head Screwdriver (Included)
- Cushioning for the drive inside of the enclosure
- Easy driver recognition for Windows

Cons: None so far and it doesn't seem like there will be.

Other Thoughts: I have had this for just over 24 hours and I must stay I am impressed. The install was simple, the speeds were right on and the built in USB 3.0 cable is the icing on the cake. I took my 120gb SSD out and replaced it with a 256gb one. Once I confirmed the new one worked I slapped this case on the old SSD, inserted the screws in the end with the included phillips and was up and rolling. Driver installed on Windows 8.1 flawlessly.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat! No more forgotten cables

Pros: - Integrated cable. I somehow always have the problem that I don't have a cable when I need one.

- really fast. I am using it with Samsung 1TB SSD (MZ-7TE1T0BW). 400MB/sec. writes vs. 450MB/sec read. Previously I had the SSD in an external ORICO enclosure. This is ~80-100MB/sec faster than the old enclosure.

Cons: none
