Should Have Tested Right Away
- Pros: Very Dependable -- Own about a dozen of the enclosures
Easy to configure installed drives
Sturdy
- Cons: The switches on the EIDE versions of this enclosure use a robust rocker switch for power. The switch on the enclosures for SATA drives are flimsy slider switches. I have had two of the SATA versions fail on me since I started purchasing that version, including one of the enclosures in my most recent purchase. I had no recourse but to take it as a loss. I will try a different brand next time.
- Other Thoughts: Make sure that you attempt to use these enclosures at least once soon after purchasing them. If you wait past 30 days (like I did) and find out later that it does not work, you will not be able to return it for a refund or replacement.
3506SASP-Black Aluminum 3.5" USB 2.0 & SATA External Enclosure
- Pros: I bought the Metal Gear Solid II 3506SASP-Black Aluminum 3.5" USB 2.0 & SATA External Enclosure about 2 years ago. Although that item is deactivated on Newegg i could still find reviews on it.
Nice looking case. This similiar product did last 2 years.
- Cons: Obviously only a one year warranty. I did not use it 24/7 like most people. I took good care of it & swapped out harddrives maybe 10 times over 2 years. Primarily, only 500gb WD caviar bought here on newegg at the same time. Last week my 500gb went "hammer time" it freezes up my desktop when i put it in. After a very long freeze time a trial version of Get data back ntfs shows most of my data so i hope i can retain it before i RMA to WEsterndigi. Just to test I put barely ever used 120gb Se@gate sata that worked for two days then went "hammer time" making strange noises & the blue HD led light on metal gear was also tweaking out. I immeditaly shut this device down & put it in my desktop. NO PROBLEMS with Se@gate. I have run into many problems w/ external cases but the point is that i can hopefully retain my data from a 5Year warranty drive and just Junk the external case. I am really ticked off this company internal card "took" my harddrive with it.
- Other Thoughts: Tech support is a joke. Case is nice but internal card is cheapo. I would have given one star but it did last me 2 years. The reason I went with one of these over buying a m@xtor, Se@gate, or WDigi EXTERNAL is that when those conk out they demand 1000 to retain your data when and if they break and you expect to RMA. You can't open their cases or you compromise the "warranty" and RMA process won't work. So they run a real racket. In this CASE no pun intended metal gear cheapo internal card took my hard drive with it. In an ideal scenario you can only hope the proprietary power brick and or internal cards go bad but DO NOT WRECK your HD when they die. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK
Nice Design and Keeps it Cool
- Pros: -blue led lights up bottom of enclosure when on (nice)
-keeps my 300 Gb Seagate Barracuda HD really cool
-pretty quiet
-pretty easy to put together
- Cons: -short USB wire
-often loses connection with my computer
- Other Thoughts: overall, i have been pretty satisfied with this enclosure. i've had it for about 3 years now, which may explain the connection loss. for it's price, it's not a bad deal. and plus, it looks really cool.
