Great Enclosure - Highly Recommend It
- Pros: All aluminum enclosure keeps the hard drive nice and cool. It also does a fairly nice job being ventilated. It's very easy to assemble and comes with nice sturdy USB and Firewire cables.
For the over all speed of large file sequential read writes, the speeds are roughly this: USB Read/Write : 24mb/22mb Firewire 400Read/Write: ~30mb/27mb
- Cons: This is being nit picky, but the power light can be kind of irritating because it's so bright. The power adapter is pretty massive and may block out other power outlets, but other than that, it's a great device.
- Other Thoughts: I'm currently using it with a 1.5TB 5400RPM Samsung HD154UI. It's been working without a problem for the past 2 months. The enclosure gets a little warm after a few hours of transferring files, but when it's not doing anything, it runs very cool. I highly recommend this drive to anyone thinking of purchasing an affordable USB & Firewire SATA enclosure.
Nicely built
- Pros: Well made. Lots of metal used in the case. Easy installation of the drive. No fan, but cooling seems OK nonetheless. I am using the WD WD15EADS drive in it. No problems.
- Cons: You have to be sure to set the drive to 1.5GB/s on the SATA interface. I had to install a jumper on the drive.
- Other Thoughts: I am always concerned about the drives running too warm, as heat is the enemy of electronics. I've been copying about 600GB of data to the drive continuously for a few hours, and the drive and case seem to be OK temperature-wise.
So Far So Good
- Pros: Good shielding, no fan so quiet operation, USB 2.0 and Firewire are great to have.
- Cons: The light is way, way to bright and they should have added a switch to turn it off (the light). Power brick is a little large, would be nice if the made them smaller or put them in the cable so they don't block other plugs.
- Other Thoughts: I am very impressed with the case, I bought it and a Samsung 1TB drive and they seem to be a good match. The drive runs a lot cooler then my 1.5TB from Seagate. Even when I stuck the Seagate into this case it ran cooler then the case I had it in, so I ordered another one of these cases. If you have a Mac Mini or Firewire 800 port only be prepared to get an adapter to be able to use Firewire.
