5 out of 5 eggsGreat DVI KVM

Pros: It works for high resolutions. It is built solid and strong.

Cons: Does not come with enough cables :(

Other Thoughts: I have been using this now for 7 years strong and never once had an issue with it. I wish they had a good display port model like this so I can upgrade to that.

4 out of 5 eggsAnalog side of DVI-I does not work

Pros: Had my company order this for me to replace an older SVGA switch that was having lots of connection issues with a Bootcamp installed system. This switch is a big improvement over the older switch I was using. Ruggedly built and works across a Mac 2008 Tower running Bootcamp, and a new Dell Optiplex

Cons: I was expecting the SVGA to DVI-I cable from an older Dell XP system to work, it does with the monitor. Apparently the DVI-I analog pins are not really used. I do have a DVI-I cable from the box to the monitor as well. I had to use the second input on the monitor for this computer, and let the switch handle the keyboard and mouse. Dropped one egg rating for that.

The new Dell Optiplex insisted it have the keyboard that was shipped with it. The other keyboards (Apple and an older Dell keyboard and mouse) I had been using would not work with it, even when plugged directly to the computer. So I cannot fault the switch on that.

Cables are/were not included.

Other Thoughts: If it is a strictly DVI setup, then I would expect this KVM to be one of the best.

2 out of 5 eggsdisappointed

Pros: love this box, has everything I wanted with it, HOWEVER

Cons: just BROKE! Bought it (10/24/2013) and it just started to flake last week....I didn't buy the protection plan so now I have to deal with the company. I sent them an email however I suspect they won't get back with me. I MAY buy another one but will buy the longest protection plan. I have to unplug the USB cable to both PCs, then plug back in and then it works correctly,

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent KVM

Pros: Works extremely well, the keyboard shortcuts are great making it easy to switch between systems. No issues when switching between different display resolution systems.

Cons: None

2 out of 5 eggsSwitch degrades over time

Pros: When I first received the switch it worked as expected. I spent a little more for this switch hoping that the quality would be there.

Cons: After a year of ownership the switch started to encounter difficulty switching. After two years of ownership it was barely usable. I finally had to replace it.

Other Thoughts: Save yourself some grief and buy a different switch.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat KVMA

Pros: This is a really good KVM and one of the few that is DVI/USB dedicated with a USB hub. They have had some quality issues with these switches but Avocent does backup their products and will refund you your purchase if their switch doesn’t work out for you as long as it is under the 2 year warranty. The USB hub works great I have a QuickCAM 9000 Pro that it shares with any of the 4 PC’s I hookup to the KVM which is nice for gaming and what not. The only issue you’ll have doing that is that when you switch between PC’s it disconnects the shared USB device and connects it to the PC your changing too, as it should but you’ll see Windows on the new connection finding new hardware whenever you switch. This wouldn’t be good for printers being shared unless you wait for the printer to cue up before switching when printing and changing to another PC. The speaker/mic share is very nice as well but is for stereo only not surround sound. You can tweak timing for the switch and can do a few ot

Cons: Now that I have a good working KVM the only limitation I’ve found is with support of Logitech Wireless trackballs the wired ones work great. My first KVM which I had slowly went bad on me at first all I could use successfully was GeForce video cards and even those gave me headaches from time to time. After about 1.5 years I was ready to throw this KVM out the window thinking that I was took. I emailed Avocent and after fighting with them a bit they finally got it in their heads that I actually did have a problem. At that point they were more than helpful and even offered to return my money if the replacement switch still didn’t work out for me. I was seriously skeptical that a refurbished switch was going to fix my issues but it sure did. Now I can use either NVidia or AMD/ATI without any problems and finally love this KVM. I can power up without being switched to the PC, which I couldn’t before, my USB keyboard/mouse doesn’t get missed like it did on occasion, and my switch doe

Other Thoughts: All KVM’s can be problematic like Belkin OmniViews which I’ve used a lot, so you always have to expect that you might encounter issues from time to time. I’ve had my replacement KVM now for a year and haven’t had one issue with it and my other business OmniView switches the Avocent performs much better and is now my most stable switch plus it’s DVI the OmniViews are just VGA and cost $400 more than this switch but they are also 8 port stackable which Avocent didn’t have when I bought this one.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat features; lots of problems

Pros: + Small size
+ Fast switching - when it works
+ Hot key support - when it works
+ Upgradeable firmware - when it's available (which it is, finally)

Cons: - Doesn't support many video cards
- Poor quality, despite sturdy-looking unit
- Expensive for switch w/o cables (though its best to get your own cables, anyway, for length and cost)
- Disruptive switch reboot/reset procedure that requires unplugging all devices
- Need to boot machine on active port, else video is unstable
- Poor quality control / customer service at Avocent technical support

Other Thoughts: Let me condense 15 months of product ownership, 5 months of active technical support cases, 3 RMAs, and 30 emails/phone calls with Avocent techncial support into less than 1,000 characters.

1. This switch has great features: DVI/USB, 4 ports, high video resolution, hot keys. If they only worked...

2. The switch does not support many video cards. In some cases they never work. In other cases they work and fail intermittently. In every case, the problematic card works fine when connected directly to the monitor.

3. Quality control among the switches is terrible. I've had 2 of these (original + RMA #1). Both had severe problems, but different problems.

4. Switch behavior degrades over time. I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it first hand, but it wears like a mechanical device.

Avocent support RMAed (#2) with a 4SV130BND1. This switch was worse than the 4SVDVI10. They RMAed (#3) that for an SVDVI15 - which works.

Save yourself a gigantic hassle and choose another swit

5 out of 5 eggsFinally...

Pros: 1 Intel Mac laptop, 1 Motorola Mac G5 tower and 1 HP XP laptop using an HP docking station with a Apple Cinema Display monitor and the Logitech Wireless Wave Keyboard/Mouse system. Amazingly enough, it all works really well. I've been thru 2 other KVMs with this system with horrible results and a lot of money so I can't tell you how elated I am that I found a system that works. I haven't tried disconnecting and reconnecting yet but I was able to pull the HP out of Standby mode with no problem. The Mac laptop gets disconnected less frequently so I'm not worried about it.

Note: You must power up initially to each device with the Avocent's selector set to that device respectively.

Cons: This may not be Avocent's fault but I can't run the stereo cable from the speakers to the HP dock. Whatever, hardly an issue. The one notable downside is that the hotkeys do not work with my Logitech keyboard because the configuration is confined to the scroll lock key which I can't seem to get working. Kind of a bummer but I'll live.

3 out of 5 eggspartially great

Pros: Nice spacious layout for cabling. Stable counterweight against cable connection (won't tip over). Video and km switching works well with wired devices (I have an MS 4000 kbd and MS lasermouse 6000). I don't have high grade video cards (see cons) but the display for still graphics and text looks excellent compared to VGA connectors.

Cons: 3 of 6 PCI-E video cards in my posession don't work with this KVM. A gigabyte 7600GS, gigabyte 8600gs and a pny 7600gs. Each of these cards have a VGA connector that works well when plugged into the Switchview USB VGA kvm (what this product replaces) and a DVI connector that works well when connected directly to the display (dell 2208wfp). I'm not sure why my BFG and other PNY cards work. I searched the web for compatibility issues and didn't find any. I checked cables by swapping those that worked on various video cards with the others - no difference. I'm using gold plated DVI-D cables also purchased from Newegg, which should be compatible with the Switchview kvm, PC, and LCD DVI=I connectors.

Other Thoughts: Newegg packaging process is among the worst I've seen. They shipped the switch in its oem/bulk box thrown into another larger shipping box with a few scraps of paper/cardboard-like filler on top of it. The box got damaged during shipping (corners bent in so it got thrown around). When I picked up the box I heard the contents shift inside. I'm not sure why Newegg does this - I've ordered many pc supplies from them and about 60% are packaged very poorly. My guess would be that their return rate would drop significantly with properly packaged items.

4 out of 5 eggsRe: Watch those connector types

Pros: Good design

Cons: So far, only the connector problem

Other Thoughts: Followup: The "Y" adapters don't work - even when directly connected without the KVM. I'm now trying separate DVI-D cables (not from Avocent) but must wait for delivery. Avocent makes an adapter (VAD-30) but that's another 25-30 bucks and they don't seem to be readily available. Need to run pin-out of "Y" adapters to see why they don't work. So, a week in, and spending more $$$, and still not fully functional.
