4 out of 5 eggsI hardly knew ye

Pros: good price.
easy to use.

Cons: haven't used enough to perceive any.

Other Thoughts: I bought this item as an insurance against needing to access older IDE drives should the need arise. Sure enough my brother-in-law did something stupid with his computer and ended up needing to borrow it. Still haven't return it yet.

1 out of 5 eggsLooks nice, non-functional.

Pros: Looks nice enough.

Cons: Was dead on arrival. I can't even get the power light to come on. It's completely unresponsive.

I wanted to do an RMA, but they want it shipped to the opposite end of the country (literally, VA->CA) and I think I'll just get something else for my time/money instead.

4 out of 5 eggsSYBA External Enclosure

Pros: Main shell and internal caddy made of Aluminum.
Supports SATA and IDE.
Hard Drive mounts firmly inside enclosure.

Cons: End Caps made of plastic.
Stand made of plastic that feels flimsy, I worry that it might break eventually.
Internal caddy is sharp, I managed to cut my fingers while installing a drive.

Other Thoughts: I tested this with a 3tb SATA hard drive, as well as a 1.6gb IDE hard drive, both worked without any issues.

While this enclosure works, if you plan to swap out drives, I would suggest buy something else. The sharp metal of the internal caddy combined with the very snug fit of the caddy can lead to cutting yourself when changing out hard drives.

4 out of 5 eggsWhat I paid for + more

Pros: This enclosure worked just fine for both 3.5" drives AND 2.5" drives, although the latter would be a too loose for general external drive use, but is perfect for just pulling data.

Cons: The IDE pins keep bending when I pull the cord out to switch to SATA, and the black cover where the ports are keeps coming loose but a bit of glue would fix that.

Other Thoughts: It is a cheap design, a bit of a challenge to figure out the trick for sliding drives in, but works (for -all- my HDDs), which is the important part.

2 out of 5 eggsI wouldn't do it again!

Pros: Great price...., switchable internal interface... I think, though, that's about it...

Cons: Thing started coming apart after about a month and a half of continuous use. Drive stripped the "TINY" mounting screws in the front of the slide-in portion of this enclosure!! Within a few weeks I could no longer use the shell!

Other Thoughts: Won't be buying these products here again.

2 out of 5 eggsLook Elsewhere

Pros: It comes with lots of screws, in case you lose some.
I'm only gives this 2 eggs because in all fairness I never tried it with SATA, only an !DE drive. Otherwise I would have given it 1 egg.

Cons: Just about the worst-engineered product I have come across in a long while!!
1. The end panel with all the electronics is flimsilly-attached to the the drive chassis--very scary
2. Because the inner drive chassis requires a ridiculous amount of force to slide into the outer chassis, it is very easy to bend or damage the electronics end panel above.
3. Trying to remove the hard drive is another adventure: it is so tightly sandwiched into the outer shell, that there is no way to pull it out for fear of really destroying the electronics panel. Instead, you have to push it out from the opposite end...however, there is no obvious way to get that "dead end" cap off!! And there are no instructions in the "instructions". if you get my drift.
After pretty much destroying the "dead end" in an effort to get the stupid cap off and rescue my hard drive inside, I finally found the 2 screws that were holding this end cap hidden under the black plastic decorative trim (which in itself was a chore to remove). Why on earth would you hide such important screws??
4. And did I say how useless the instructions are that they give you? That having been noted, you shouldn't NEED instructions for such a simple product if it is well-engineered.

Other Thoughts: Oh and by the way, my IDE drive that I purchased this for does not work in this enclosure (does even spin). I suspect a power connector problem in the horribly bent 4-pin Molex connection as others have experienced. But I'm so whipped by this product that I will not bother RMAing it. I just want to see it gone!!
Save yourself some time and frustration and try something else. I really love those v***** enclosures.

Manufacturer Response:
