5 out of 5 eggsGreat Produst

Pros: Bought this external enclosure over a year ago for a spare hard drive I wanted to use, the case has held up great even being tossed around in a bag sometimes with the cable still connected. Great price as well.

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggscheaply made

Pros: Slim and silver (partly)

Cons: Cheaply made, after no more than 5 times plugging in the male end the female connector *broke off the pcb board*!

Other Thoughts: 5 uses, broken forever.... i want a refund.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little case USB 3.0

Pros: Great slim case! Easy to assemble.

Cons: cord falls out every once and awhile. I think that is more my fault.

2 out of 5 eggsCheap hastily made but slim

Pros: USB3 & very slim (barely thicker than harddrive itself). Very cheap!

Cons: Multiple - read below:

1) One of the EARLIEST USB3 2.5"/laptop formfactor enclosures. Got mine from another place in July 2010, strongly prefer Newegg but they didn't have in stock in July 2010, so I've owned it long enough:
USB3 miniconnector is wrong design - soldered onto PCB board but not "sunk" into enclosure enough to support cable. Extremely prone to breaking off - and USB3 cable is ridiculously stiff for this enclosure. You must be careful when connecting/disconnecting. Utterly cheap wrong design for the CONNECTOR

2) Worked most of the time with new computers, but it had intermitted signaling violations with prev. generation USB2 ports. Eventually killed my harddrive with tons of work data (obviously like all reasonable people I had 2 backups, but still - wasted $90 on advanced WD harddrive & enclosure). Low quality firmware Chip.
3) Blue LED is completely overkill, it's brighter than a laser I had to coverup at night

Other Thoughts: May I suggest:
Spend a little more money, on brands liek Vantec, etc. They might be slightly THICKER/larger, more money but at least you won't be losing critical data or treat your enclsoure like a "fragile egg".

This one is so finicky.
Sorry to mention, but I am an EE Engineer and I testify the mini-USB3 connector (on Enclosure's side), is poor quality, wrong design - can be broken off by slight pressure.
Constantly losing contact - and THAT KILLED MY HARDDRIVE. Connector just falls out of socket, especially b/c USB3 cable included is of monster stiffness - stiffer than my DESKTOp USB3 enclosure.

So one day it fell out again while drive was writing. It's liek sudden power failure - NTFS partiton got corrupt. next day i was able to read drive with special recovery tools but - only shreds of it. Forget it.

4 out of 5 eggsI'm happy with it (so far)

Pros: So many people wrote so many bad things about this enclosure that I was hesitant to buy it even with 30% discount and free shipping (under $10). Now I wish I bought two (or three).

Just to make sure I super-glued the connector to the PCB like some suggested but I don't think it will make any difference, maybe if I hot-glued it but I don't have a glue gun.

I am very happy with the result. I get over 50mb/s sustained in most cases, sometime even shooting past 100mb/s in burst. WAY faster than my USB 2.0 enclosures and drives.

So far so good. I will keep my fingers crossed on the connector.

Cons: Case is bulky for a 2.5" enclosure. They could have been so much thinner if they ditched the pcb that the drive sits on. The beacon of a blue light is on all the time and doesn't serve any real purpose other than a reading lamp in my opinion. How about having it turn on ONLY when accessing data instead of the other way around? Cable is also pretty stiff and in my opinion and one meter is too long and would have prefer 30 to 50 centimeters.

Other Thoughts: I wish Rosewill would buy one of those fake Sony Vaio USB 2.0 2.5" drive enclosures off a well known auction website for $6 delivered and simply copy it with USB 3.0 electronics and a descent connector. If they did they would have the killer enclosure of the coming decade.

4 out of 5 eggsUnit works fine

Pros: Case is thin, appears to dissipate drive heat well. This is the third USB enclosure I've bought, but only the first that has actually worked correctly (see other thoughts below).

Cons: This unit is not large/thick enough to accomodate a 12.5mm drive.
The USB 3.0 cable is thick and not particularly flexible; also, it connects somewhat loosely to the drive, and not very snuggly to the USB 3.0 port of my computer. The computer/drive connection is simply not as reliable as with USB 2.0 drives.

Other Thoughts: Having bought both a Cavalry enclosure and an Acomdata enclosure prior to this one, I can say that the Syba/Connectland enclosure is the only one that has worked correctly. The Cavalry's USB connector came unsoldered within days, and the Acomdata stopped working within minutes. The Syba/Connectland is the only one, so far, that has worked flawlessly.

1 out of 5 eggsStopped working after 2 days - avoid

Pros: - Sleek and rather small
- USB 3.0

Cons: - Looks cheaper in reality than the pictures show
- Is that really "stainless steel" ? Looks more like cheap sheet metal with chrome plating
- Stopped working after 2 days of light use (RMA'd it)

Other Thoughts: This seems to be a flawed design - unfortunately many after-market USB 3.0 enclosures have this flaw. The Mini-B USB 3.0 connector is not supported by the casing but only by the solder on the PCB, and the included cable (comes in blue...) is very stiff. Go figure what happens after some use (in my case, 2 days).

1 out of 5 eggsWill be RMA'ing

Pros: N/A

Cons: Had to RMA. My first time plugging it in windows failed to find drivers. I unplugged it then plugged it in again and then it fails to be found. Cable rocks back and forth when plugged into the enclosure, not sturdy at all. This might be the cause of the problem. Hard drive activity LED does not even come on and I have tested the drive with other enclosures. The drive is WD 3200BEVT. I will be RMA'ing this enclosure. I will not buy another.

3 out of 5 eggsNice looking but...

Pros: Nice looking slim case, easy open case if you know how (No instructions)

XP and Windows 7 found the device and installed drivers without issue. I don't have a PC with USB 3.0 so I cannot speak on the speed of 3.0 for this device.

Cons: The one I received was not a Syba, but a "ConnectLand" , it is a subsidiary of Syba. It has a funky usb 3.0 micro B socket on the enclosure, so usb 2.0 cables may not work.

The cable is that ugly blue color and is large in diameter (.220) and is very stiff and will make placing the enclosure where you want it difficult.

No instructions on how to open the case, the chrome case lid slides back then up from the connector end of the case, do not try to pry it up. It fits very snug on mine, I don't think I will put the supplied screw in to secure it.

Chrome side of the case fingerprints like crazy.

Here is the cable

Did I say how bad the cable is...

Other Thoughts: I did not really need 3.0, but the case looked really nice and slim, and it is, but the cable is just a deal breaker if I knew in advance. Syba really cut the corner with a cheap and inflexible ugly blue cable, the price does not justify doing this. I would return it but the restocking fee and return shipping makes this one a bust to return. Maybe after 3.0 has been around for a while I can pick up a 3.0 micro b cable that is more flexible and inexpensive in the future. Maybe a 2.0 micro cable will work on this enclosure for 2.0 operation, not sure, I don't have one to try.

The sata socket is a tight fit, I had to gently rock the drive side to side with forward pressure to get the drive seated all the way.

Hey Newegg advertise this as "ConnectLand" not Syba, Syba is nowhere on the product or the box.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for purchasing our Syba products. We are sorry to hear that the product has stop functioning as it should be. This enclosure can support USB 2.0 and 3.0. You don't need USB 3.0 to use this enclosure. The cable supply's the required power for USB 3.0. This enclosure is backward compatible with USB 2.0. I would like to point out that we can also issue RMA returns. We always try to provide the most reliable products to our customers and all products come with at least 3-year warranty. So please don't hesitate to contact us at for replacement or question.
