4 out of 5 eggsWorks great!

Pros: -Everything works great.
-Comes with an adapter to put the 3.5" card reader into a 5.25" bay.
-Speeds of USB 3.0 were good.

Functionally, it is a terrific card reader! One of the best ones (for me) that I have ever used. USB 3.0 ports and an SD card slot are all I need! No annoyingly bright LED indicator always on with it either.

Cons: -Requires either a SATA or molex power cable to function.
-Have to take the cover off of it to connect everything.

Installing this was just a pain. Much harder than it should have been. Most of the trouble of it could have been avoided if the power connector were on the outside of the card reader. Instead, they are on the inside, so you have to take the cover off, then hook up the cables (which means it will be connected to your power supply), and then put it back together and screw it into the adapter. If your cords are already tied partially for cable management or just short this can be a major pain.

Other Thoughts: Everything on it works great! Installation was just much harder than it should have been. It probably wouldn't be too bad on a machine that isn't already built, but I was adding this to a computer that already had all the cable management done and was a very tight build. So, having to have the power connector plugged in , then having to put the cover back on it, then having to put it in the 5.25" bay adapter was a major pain. I had to completely undo some of my cable management to get enough slack in the cord so I could have it outside the case and put the card reader back together with the cable in before installing it.

2 out of 5 eggsNot worth the $ to RMA

Pros: If you want a USB 2 hub I guess it works.

Cons: USB 3 devices connected to the USB 3 ports only work at USB 2 speeds. I connect the same device to the port on the MB and they work fine at USB 3 speeds. The shipping cost to RMA it are just not worth it. Also the company refuses to do a cross ship of a new unit so I can just take apart my computer once, even when I offered to let them put a hold on my CC for the price of the unit.

Other Thoughts: I hear that they are shipping it with a different cable these days, it's just not worth my time to take my comp apart, ship them that cable at my cost, wait for them to send a replacement, then take my comp apart all over again after that.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We only do that if the attempting to get a replacement after the 1 warranty period.

For customers still within the 1 year warranty period, we need a copy of the invoice. Once confirmed the customer may get a new replacement cable from us.

Thank you for leaving us your valuable feedback.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work with Syba Adapter!

Pros: USB 3.0 functions (ONLY). If that's all you need/want, fine.

Cons: Won't work with Syba's own PCI-Express 3.0 adapter (SD-PEX20080). When connected to the USB 3.0 adapter, only USB 3.0 devices are recognized and Device Manager shows a USB 2.0 hub needing a driver. The packaging and manual says none needed (and none are available). When this thing is plugged into a USB 2.0 port, it recognizes both USB 2.0 and 3.0 devices, but of course, the USB 3.0 devices are only running at USB 2.0 speed. Not what I bought it for.

Other Thoughts: It's unbelievable that Syba's own units are incompatible. That's the only reason I purchased this unit in spite of the numerous other bad reviews. Be warned.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We apologize for the inconvenience you are experiencing.

3 out of 5 eggsNice for a 3.5" bay; waste of a larger bay

Pros: i) Three powered SuperSpeed ports (contrary to packaging/manual which imagines a white non-3.0 port between the card slot and the 2nd port)
ii) Includes the usual Type A-to-B cable as well as the 19-pin header type, so you could maybe repurpose it as a (non-powered) portable hub
iii) Has both SATA and Molex 8981 power jacks (Achtung: Nein Zu Pluggen Simultaneouslich)
iv) Card reader recognizes SDXC

Cons: * Card reader is only USB 2.0 -- unsurprising at this price
* Cable lengths are each about 1 ft max and the fat molded 19-pin header can be tight to fit
* Minor flex on the 5.25" faceplate; spring in the card reader sticks if not inserted carefully; YGWYPF

Other Thoughts: The shielded box (you pop off the top to connect the internal cables) takes up all the space in the 3.5" frame, and the included adapter leaves you no room for installing anything else e.g. a thin drive or DVD.

Manufacturer Response:

Our engineers will look into this matter. If it is a problem with our production design, we will improve it.

2 out of 5 eggsDoes not work properly

Pros: SD Card Reader Works

Cons: USB ports failed to read any of my flash drives. Works fine in all the other ports on my computer, just not the ones on this unit.

This unit won't let my computer into sleep mode. Some error logging showed that a usb host wouldn't enter sleep so sleep mode is abandoned. When this unit is unplugged computer will enter sleep mode, when its plugged in won't enter sleep mode. Tried updating drivers, haven't seen any change.

Other Thoughts: USB Ports seem to work with most items, just can't get them to recognize flash drives. Won't let my computer enter sleep mode.

2 out of 5 eggsDefinitely Wouldn't Recommend

Pros: Card Reader Works
USB works with most items, but not all. Read below.

Cons: I discovered 2 issues with this reader.

1. It won't read any of my thumb drives. They are all Sandisk and work perfectly in all of my other USB Ports. When plugging them into any of the 3 ports on this unit, nothing happens. Doesn't acknowledge their existence.

2. This unit won't allow my computer to go into sleep mode. When attempting sleep the computer immediately comes back on. After some event logging I discovered the computer never actually reached sleep state. A warning is recorded saying a USB Host won't enter sleep mode so it aborts. When this unit is unplugged computer enters sleep mode just fine. Plug the unit back in and can't enter sleep. The culprit is obviously this unit. I've tried updating drivers to no avail.

Other Thoughts: Overall the unit mostly works. But I can't recommend it. Not reading my thumb drives is aggravating. And when using the unit I can't put my computer to sleep which is even more annoying since I routinely use it, well I did. Now I use hibernation which takes even longer to go down and come back up. Trying to return the unit isn't worth me spending even more money on this unit to potentially run into the same exact issue.

2 out of 5 eggsInoperable within the prescribed context_

Pros: Very easy to assemble, precision dimensions with no "doesnt quite fit" obstacles; Housing and PCB were obviously made for each other - very good. Circuit is easy to understand, with the one VLI controller four-port hub IC running most of the show....but unfortunately its a show that never comes.

Cons: The device cannot operate using the intended method of plugging the supplied usb3 cable into the 19-pin mobo header and the "B" side into the back of the unit (along with either SATA Power or Molex. The device takes ONE (not two) "port" from the motherboard and brings it o the VLI 4-port hub, supplying three faceplate USB3 ports with the forth port driving the single card reader at usb3 speeds. How do I know this if it doent work? Turns out there is USB3 "A" to "B" cable supplied which, as you might imagine carries ONE set of wires for ONE port. In fact if the cable were long enough you could waste a rear USB3 port and pick a spot on your case to breach and make entry to the inside (assuming you dont have an open slot right below the rear usb ports. If I had a steady hand and didnt mind risking damaging a brand new motherboard I' just just use the single port "A to B" cable, cut off the "A" end and mate each wire to the appropriate pin on one row of the mobo header, and ye,s the unit would work perfeclty. But there are already several other items I must discover how to RMA and then perform the actual RMA procedure AND did I mention glycogene stores are depleted? SO now I dont know what to do with the $30 device. DO I send it back to newegg or the anufacturer? What happens when there is no manufacturer name? Ah nevermind I remember the drill from many years ago.

Other Thoughts: I'm obsessed with newegg. I totally love their streamlined, persistant "things you've recently viewed" and "other customers also purchased" banners at the bottom of every section, they can be a life saver when you have 193 tabs open , all newegg or research pertaining to a newegg product. Because of an entirely coincidental "streak" of lost funds that I've yet to reclaim, I think I"ll step away from the eggg (briefly), as it is the sales tax-free holiday here. FOr what its worth, of the 132 items I've purchased from Newegg since 2006, this is the first time I've ever had to RMA something. And if you think thats awesome, get this: 40% of all those purchases were "REFURBISHED" items, INCLUDING FIVE OCZ Vertex II SSDs (all still working

Manufacturer Response:

Note that the 19-Pin USB 3.0 header does not provide power, but only a USB 3.0 connection. Which is why it uses a molex or SATA power feed to connect from the HUB to the power supply.

5 out of 5 eggsThis thing is built like a Tank

Pros: Mechanically well built, very pleasing to look at, easy to install, directions are clear, and the finest "included" USB HD cables I have ever seen. I used the 3.5" placement and it is rock solid in the hole. The card reader fires up quick and true. I am running Win 7 64 bit and the OS did not require any special new drivers. The thing is Plug & Play.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: To all you newbies out there who can not read directions... there are two power inputs on this device. One is Molex and the other is SATA. DO NOT PLUG A POWER CORD INTO BOTH OF THEM. Either choose the 4-pin Molex or the flat SATA power input but not both or you will likely burn this device up... and judging from previous reviews I think some people have done just that.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Experience With This Product

Pros: none that my computer technician states.

Cons: The 5-High rating is for my computer technician. My rating is low for components of the computer but I am very good working with computer programs. He said this hub was not at all as was specified. For one the cord was not as shown and nothing was as stated. I can say he is very good since the fact is that he built my new computer in March of 2012 and upgraded my old computer the same month. I spent over $2,000 getting all my parts from NewEgg. I had always been very happy with NewEgg until this incident. I hope it will be better in the future.

Other Thoughts: I wanted an additional 3.0 usb hub for the front of my computer but this item did not fit the bill. It was also difficult getting an RMA for the return and the shipping cost was almost half the amount of the item. My computer technician got angry over the phone. Wish he hadn't. I still want him to find a hub that will work on my computer.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

This product should fuction with all 3.0 USB specified motherboards. One important detail to so make sure to only use 1 power feed source or it will damage the hub (use wither SATA or Molex).

If both power is used, it will make the device defective.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great, Exactly as advertised

Pros: -is what it is, never had problems with the usb 3s, havnt had a reason to use the usb 2 yet,

Cons: -the adapter for a 5.25 inch bay has nothing that keep the unit in place so when you take a flash drive out you just need to make sure you dont rip the whole thing out
-

Other Thoughts: -over all cant complain for a usb+card reader for under 30 bucks
