5 out of 5 eggsSix eggs

Pros: I could not have anticipated how much I would like this product. The enclosure is a hard, very durable and light aluminum case, with a very sturdy plastic stand. It is opened with two screws on the side. One extra side screw and one extra HDD screw are included (nobody includes extra screws anymore)! On top of that, a philips head screwdriver is also included!
Beside all of that, the usb 3 interface works great and has a plenty long cable. It turns on and off instantly with the power button (you don't have to hold it). It has a button in the back, which can be linked to backup software if you want.
I would really give this six eggs if I could. I have purchased tons of computer hardware before, and never have I seen a manufacturer go so far beyond my expectations.

Cons: It won't give you superpowers. Sorry.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works as advertised.

Cons: Somewhat noisy, but that could be from the HD itself, so no eggs off.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Quite the build quality I was expecting

Pros: Its USB 3.0 and it works. The drive spins down when not in use.

Cons: The pictures make it look like its steel/aluminum construction, however the tray that you screw the drive to is plastic, not metal. I also assumed from the pictures that the ventilation would be good esp with the mesh like front. However, the mesh grill is backed by solid plastic with two clusters of 9 holes (similar to the one on the back). I am also disappointed that the included software doesn't support Linux, however, that isn't unexpected.

Other Thoughts: I haven't tried (and don't plan to try) the included software. The enclosure works just fine without the software on Windows 7.

5 out of 5 eggsAttractive and Fast Enclosure

Pros: - Attractive Finish
- USB 3.0
- Easy HDD Install
- Horizontal or Vertical Positioning
- Screwdriver included

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This external enclosure has an attractive finish to it. I believe it was the first thing that drew me to it. It seems to be solid in construction and doesn't feel cheap.

The install was super easy and came with all required hardware and tools. I popped in a green WD 2 TB drive and reassembled the case. I plugged it into a USB 3.0 port on the back of my PC and it was up and running in no time.

Overall this is a nice external enclosure for a good price. I am pleased with this item.

On a side note: I have not had any issues, as previous reviewers, regarding speed drops/issues with USB 3.0.

5 out of 5 eggsSimple to use

Pros: Easy HDD install, fast interface

Cons: power button on front, power button not power switch

Other Thoughts: Came with some funky HDD speed boost software that claims to increase HDD transfer rates above the USB 3.0 interface ability. Not sure whether it works, because the HDD I am using is SATA II and can't max the bus speed anyway.

1 out of 5 eggsPay a little more for a more reputable brand, this thing only kinda works.

Pros: Easy to swap out drives.
Front power button is nice.

Cons: Unreliable - loses connection while in use using USB 3.0 port at anywhere from 2 minutes to 20 minutes - Big backup jobs are a coinflip. And seeing as how that is kinda the whole point of why I want an external hard drives enclosure, I don't know how I could give anything but a 1 egg rating.

Included one touch backup software that is included is useless

Other Thoughts: This is a classic example of paying less for an unknown brand is a gamble that no RMA process can mitigate. I got this drive and popped it in. Everything seemed to be working ok, but then I noticed that the drive would disconnect itself from my computer and then reconnect - while in use. I tried to test this in various ways - used different USB 3.0 ports (native usb3 header/pci-e usb3 card) different hard disks (seagate/WD sizes varying from 500GB to 1.5TB), and on difference machines and the same thing happened. To reiterate, this happened while the drive was in use - while I was transferring files, while I was watching media from the drive, so it wasn't a energy saving thing or anything. To make matters worse, the disconnecting would happen at various intervals. Sometimes it would happen 30 seconds after being connected to the computer. And other times it happened as far as 20 minutes after being connected.

Anyways, I RMA with New Egg, with no hassle. The problem is I have to pay shipping which comes out to 10 bucks using UPS ground. I even live in southern California so it didn't have that far to go. So any money I would have saved by getting this one is no longer an issue, but I don't really care, as long as I get a working enclosure.

Well the new enclosure arrives and I get the same exact problems. I could RMA again but at this point, I've already poured in 35 bucks into this thing, and it seems a poor investment to put another 10 bucks into it when the chances of me getting another bad enclosure seem very high. I think I'm probably better off just eating the costs at this point and going with a different brand.

I very much wish I had just bought another enclosure instead.

Anyways, I suppose that this is the way of the world. We want less expensive products, but to get this smaller companies have to skimp on something, and that thing is usually quality control. In reading other reviews it would seem that this company has poor quality control. I wish New Egg did a better job of making sure that only quality stuff got sold on here, but I understand their position, they just need to move product and need to be able to offer a wide price range. All the same, you should not buy this enclosure.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We have tested a few of our inventory to see if this issue persists. However, out of the 15 we tested, all performs 500gb transfers in less than a 5 minutes. Perhaps the USB 3.0 Ports/Controller card drivers are having an issue.

We apologize for any issues that you are having. As you know we are more than happy to provide our customers with a hassle free exchange when a product is defective.

SYBA offers an online RMA form, the user can easily fill out the form and submit it for a quick RMA return and exchange. It is SYBA's policy to answer all customer inquiries within 24 hours (M-F)

Making affordable quality products is our goal. Our engineers will look into this matter. If it is a problem of our production design, we will improve it.

Thank you for purchasing one of our products, and for leaving us your valuable feedback.

5 out of 5 eggsEffortless construction

Pros: From unpacking to having my Mac recognizing the drive took about 5 minutes. My 10 year old could have assembled the enclosure *without* looking at the manual. The additional screw driver is a big plus -- attention to these type of conveniences should be followed by many other hardware manufacturers

Cons: None.

3 out of 5 eggsUnreliable USB3.0

Pros: Aluminum case, easy drive installation, price

Cons: Does not operate reliably on USB 3.0. Tried a 3TB sataII WD drive and a 500GB sataII Seagate drive on an ASUS P8Z77-V Pro i7 system. Both drives disconnected during when transferring files after ~200GB (xfer speed 34MB/s). Seems to operate on USB 2.0 successfully - is not reliable on USB3.0.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: Easy to setup. USB accelerator really works. Sees the entire 3TB partition. Power button is on the front!

Cons: The OS backup software doesn't work with Windows 8. It'll run in Windows 7 compatibility mode, but since it's supposed to restore the OS in the event of a disaster, I'm not sure it's going to do the job on Windows 8. The backup package looks pretty lame anyway; it just copies the C drive and nothing more... and is skips any open files.

Other Thoughts: I didn't have any problems with incorrect screw sizes. They all fit perfectly. Syba even included a little Philips screwdriver in case you need one (I didn't). I also had no problem getting the drive to see the entire 3TB partition on my Western Digital green drive. I installed the drive in the enclosure, went to Windows 8 disk administrator, formatted the partition, and assigned it a drive letter. The enclosure picked it up right away. Further (and to my surprise), the USB acceleration actually works. Without the software running, I'm doing about 60 MB/s to the drive. With it running, I'm doing about 100 MB/s. Freaky. I'm running an Asus P8Z77-V board with native USB 3 support, and everything gets along very well. The enclosure itself is brushed aluminum and looks nice. The drive spins down after about five minutes of non-use, so if you forget to turn it off, no worries. In all, I'm pleasantly surprised how well this thing works.

4 out of 5 eggsFront Power Button with Activity Light

Pros: Power button is located on the front, and glows blue, and shows Hard Drive activity. Thick, Sturdy Aluminum Case with plenty of ventilation to allow heat to escape. Thick durable USB cable.

Cons: The screws provided to connect your hard drive onto this enclosures slide out, inner tray, are to wide, to fat, wrong thread pattern, for my hard drive, and possibly any hard drive for that matter. The screws only tighten half way down. This causes the tray to be blocked from sliding back together. BE CAREFUL - If any more force is applied they would get stuck, or create metal shavings, or break - BE CAREFUL [-1 Egg]

Other Thoughts: I used hard drive screws that came with my hard drive, and NOT the ones provided with this enclosure. They worked perfectly to connect my hard drive to this enclosures slide out, inner tray. Everything is working great and I get very fast transfer speeds "to and from" this hard drive enclosure. I purchase 2 of these drives and I would definitely buy this drive enclosure again. The Power Button is located on the front!! So hard to find...
