5 out of 5 eggsVery heavy and durable construction.

Pros: Thick, metal case. Comes with a longer than average micro USB cable. Hard drive fits in securely. Low price.

Cons: None, unless it being heavy is a bad thing.

Other Thoughts: I was very surprised at just how heavy and durable this case feels. Metal construction with a plastic middle that opens up. So far it's working great, with no issues with the micro USB port. Seems secure. I slipped in my 500GB drive that came out of my PS4 and it's working without issue. Good deal for just 8 bucks shipped

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy Connectland

Pros: Nice when it worked

Cons: Only worked two weeks

Other Thoughts: Zero stars.
I finally got this set up several months after purchase. Worked great after I resolved a problem with my usb 3.0 card. But failed not two weeks later. Connectland requires you register within 7 DAYS of purchase or their one year warranty is no good. They are using technicalities to avoid accountability. AVOID.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Construction

Pros: - This came with a $10 rebate, so I got it for a good price.
- The case is solid and does a great job of protecting the drive inside.
- The spring-loaded mechanism makes it easy to remove the drive.

Cons: - The 2nd day I had it, connecting the USB 3 cable to the drive caused the receptacle to collapse into the case, meaning I couldn't use it again. I was very careful with it, so this was not a case of forcing the cable into the drive.

Other Thoughts: I wish this had worked well because the drive seemed really promising. I bought and "inland 08415 Plastic 2.5" Black USB 3.0 USB 3.0 Hard Drive Enclosure" elsewhere to replace it and that works beautifully (Item#: N82E16817205019)

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: No issues since I bought it 6 months ago. Works great with both drives I've tried in this enclosure.
USB3 works great. Very fast speeds. I get roughly 80MB/s read/write speeds.

Cons: No cons.

Other Thoughts: I believe this drive fits the slightly thicker 2.5" drives, the ones that're around 11mm thick, which generally don't fit in macbooks and most laptops.
USB3 uses different looking cables, however, the regular USB2 cables, similar to the ones that most modern phones use, also work on this one. If you look at the USB3 and USB2 cables closely, you'll notice that the USB3 cables just include a small extension on the side that have five additional connection for more data and power.

So, if you lose the USB3 cable that comes with this, do not fear, a regular USB2 cable would work fine. You just won't get the fast speeds.

4 out of 5 eggs2nd purchase, 2nd review

Pros: - See my previous review from 4/7/2013
- Case is $10 after MIR

Cons: - See my previous review from 4/7/2013

Other Thoughts: - This unit came with the free SYBA PCIe single-port USB3 card and that card works fine also.

- For $10 after MIR, I was able to add USB3 to an older motherboard (ASUS P5KPL-CM) and an external tool-less case. Certainly no complaints about that!

- 4-Egg rating stays the same since this external case has not changed at all. The rating reflects the case 'as is'. It doesn't get an additional egg just because it came with a free USB3 controller card. That's not always available, so the review stands for anyone that is getting just this external case.

3 out of 5 eggsI suppose they're OK considering they're only $10

Pros: Cheap price and solid metal construction

Cons: Tried to use with a "thin" SSD (SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD250KW) and the SSD did not have enough height to allow for the ejection mechanism of the enclosure to work ... needed to carefully use pliers to remove the drive that had been scratched on the top by the ejection mechanism.

Also, I cannot get these to work with USB 3.0 after several attempts with different hard drives/SSDs. They would repeatedly disappear and reappear in Windows 7 using a Lenovo IdeaPad Y480. When connecting to a USB 2.0 port, it would work properly. I have no issues using USB 3.0 memory sticks with this computer, so I believe it is an issue with the enclosures, not the computer. I unfortunately do not have another computer with USB 3.0 available at this time to test the enclosures.

Other Thoughts: If these were more than $10, I probably would have returned them due to the lack of USB 3.0 compatibility with my computer (again, I can't speak to whether or not they would work with another computer with USB 3.0). However, they get the job done at USB 2.0 and perform adequately.

4 out of 5 eggsWith a rebate, it's a fairly solid purchase

Pros: - 1/16" thick aluminum housing
- Tool-less design (*See Other Thoughts below)
- Decent speed when benchmarked with a SATA3 SSD
- 32" USB3 cable

Cons: - The arm for ejecting the drive doesn't extend the full height of the case, so on thinner drives, like some SSDs, you need to bend the lever a bit so it can just barely catch the edge of the drive housing

- There is a thin strip of springsteel in the enclosure that is used to keep to the drive somewhat secure by applying minimal pressure to the top of the drive. If you aren't careful upon insertion, you can tweak this strip so it's no longer flush against the top of the inner wall. If that happens, it catches any time you insert a new drive which then negates the "tool less" design :-(

Other Thoughts: - I benched this case using an OCZ Vertex3 SSD and compared it to NewEgg part number N82E16817576017. (I ran two tests on each, swapping only the external cases.)
Average Read Speeds were identical, but the Write speed differed rather noticeably. This SYBA case maxed out at 167MB/s, whereas the other unit had a better max (and average) Write of 220MB/s.

- The first time using this case, the drive I inserted caught the little piece of springsteel. Thinking it was simply a snug fit, I pressed a bit harder until I realized the drive wasn't going to seat in the connector. I took the drive out and found the little strip bunched up at the back of the case (near the connectors). This caused the strip to bend itself to the opposite wall, thus blocking any drive from simply sliding into the case. I now have to use a small screwdriver or a file to hold that strip back so I can insert a drive. It's a P.I.T.A. now, but it's essentially my fault. Any chance SYBA wants to send me a courtesy message and replace this unit for me? You reading this SYBA??? :-)

All in all, it's not a bad case. "Tool Less" is a bonus, but certainly not a necessity. As I am replacing laptop HDDs with SSDs, I'm accumulating 2.5" HDDs. I am looking for places to store them and these external cases work fine. It's not like I'm constantly swapping them in and out of a single case. I'm also not concerned about it not being the fastest case out there since I'm putting in HDDs that won't really hit that throughput ceiling. (However, I mentioned it for people that may be thinking about putting SSDs in this case and DO want the fastest possible transfer speeds.)

All that being said, this case is back on sale again with a different rebate AND also includes a PCIe card with a single USB3 port which can go into my older system. After MIR, it's only $10 for everything, so I'll be buying another one. Now that I know to be a bit more careful upon drive insertion, I expect this next one to remain a "Tool Less" design.

So if you can find it with a rebate, it's a solid purchase. If you don't require tool less design and want a slightly faster case for SSD usage, you might consider looking elsewhere.

2 out of 5 eggsYou get what you pay for

Pros: Inexpensive, tool-less design.

Cons: USB3 doesn't seem to work with my Mac (Hackintosh), but it seems that USB2 does. Cheap construction. Flimsy ejection "foot". Heavy casing (could be a plus for some people).

Other Thoughts: I've tested it with a couple of drives, and I've seen issues with both. I popped the drives back into my other enclosure (Sabrent) and they work fine.
I've considered returning it, but it's not worth it.

4 out of 5 eggsBe careful removing a drive

Pros: Extremely easy drive installation.

Cons: Weak drive ejection mechanism. The first time I tried to remove a drive the eject lever bent because the position to the lever, that pushes out the drive, was not centered on the drive and the drive skewed in the enclosure. To avoid this wiggle the drive as you are ejecting it. Some dis-assembly was needed to straighten the lever.

Other Thoughts: With a Sandisk Extreme 240 GB drive Crystal DiskMark Showed 245 MB/S read and 216 MB/S write speeds.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: High quality material
Simple to install
Stays very cool with 256gb SSD

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: The included cable is pretty long but it is REALLY heavy duty and stiff compared to other USB 3.0 cables I have. Not a big deal but it is more suited for being plugged into the back of your pc tower and left there then being transported around. The USB 3.0 end is common with other manufactures so finding a more flexible cable is not a problem.

This unit has worked with no problems under XP sp3 and Win7 64bit Ultimate and Win7 64bit home(laptop)
