1 out of 5 eggsI have RMA'ed This Device

Pros: There are no pro's to a device that is advertised as a USB 3 hard drive cloning and docking station....when the very USB 3 JMicron usb chipset that is inside this incorrectly advertised "Connectland Syba" device is incapable......completely incapable of being recognized as a USB 3.0 device in a Windows 7 64 bit operating system with an otherwise perfectly functioning USB 3 Controller and subsystem. To make matters even more absurd is that this device will not even be recognized by EITHER of the Syba USB 3.0 Controller Cards that I have taken the time to install and then uninstall on every one of the machines I have running in my house right now. Those Syba Controller cards work perfectly with every other USB 3.0 device i attach to them.....EXCEPT THIS incorrectly advertised Docking \ Cloning device. Even in USB 2.0 mode this device is unreliable as a cloning device. The only function this device does is act like a USB 2.0 external SATA adapter. Perhpas the most expensive USB 2.0 such adapter Newegg is now selling. I actually cannot believe that Newegg is still selling this clearly OUT OF BOX defective device. But I am going to play the game....I have an RMA with SYBA right now and am going to ship the entire original box and accessories to SYBA first thing Monday morning.

Cons: .I understand that not all IT or computer peripherals work out....or work as they are supposed to in both design feature and advertisement.....BUT when the customer support department of SYBA gets on this Newegg web page and responds with the willful denial of there being anything wrong with this device as advertised, or questioning the statistical "possibility" of a user ever receiving a defective original unit AND a subsequent defective RMA replacement unit.....then only two things can be in play if that premise is as incredibly unlikely as it genuinely is.

Syba support is admitting the device is inherently incorrectly advertised AND this is NOT a USB 3.0 device and hoping almost literally daring the consumer to pay for shipping and return the RMA as many times as it takes to get a working unit that works as advertised on the very box it is shipped from the manufacturer in. Here's a New egg GEEK challenge....I challenge the Newegg product testing staff to go in the warehouse...pick a warehouse any warehouse....California, New Jersey or Memphis.....and pull one of these units with the "scotch taped" model number CL-ENC50053 stuck on the shrink wrap outside of this "otherwise named Connectland device...I challenge Newegg Staff to pull one of these devices and get it to be recognized on ANY computer in the entire Newegg quality program as a genuine USB 3.0 device.

Other Thoughts: So I won a little money on the lottery last month.....I bought a lot of different stuff from Newegg......like I have done for years....and because this particular SYBA device is so internet wide reported as "problematic"...I set another little bit of "shipping money" aside for this issue right here. I am going to return this device back to SYBA every single time they send me the same incorrectly advertised device back as an RMA replacement. I am going to have the device attached to known working computers with completely certified USB 3.0 controllers and subsystems....and with every subsequent nonworking RMA replacement (there's over a year left on this warranty)......then SYBA's own posted response scenario on this web of the statistical unlikelihood of ever receiving back to back original and RMA defective devices....SYBA knows better than this......they produced a device uner the Connectland badge or bought a lot of these incorrectly advertsied devices and now SYBA is not behaving correctly. This is a tough business selling lower priced cards and computer peripherals and still making a profit to stay in business. But you can't start making things up when it comes to USB 3.0 compliance and functionality. A USB 3.0 advertised device that can only EVER possibly NOT be recognized and only ever functions as a non USB 3.0 device is NOT a USB 3.0 anything.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Most cases involving devices not being recognized by USB3.0 slots are resolved with a BIOS update and/or system updates being applied.

Perhaps using a different USB3.0 cable will help.

Have you tried disconnecting your PSU from the wall outlet?

Thank you for purchasing on of our products, and for leaving us your valuable feedback.

1 out of 5 eggsStay Away !!!!

Pros: It clones all of my hard drives & SSDs!

Cons: Will NOT work on any of my computers in the USB 3.0 mode. Sometimes it will work on about 50% of my computers, if I unplug the USB cable while it is turned on (meaning hot) then plugging it back in while it is still hot.
It works when connected to a USB 2.0 port, but, I purchased it because it is USB 3.0.
I have not tested it with a eSATA port, because, I do not have a need for it.
I tried uninstalling drivers, reinstalling, updating, etc.; nothing worked.

Other Thoughts: The main reason I do not like products that do not work, as advertised, is because they can waste a lot of your time.

My time is more important than the money.

Also, I believe more of us should ONLY BUY PRODUCTS THAT HAVE A VERY HIGH REVIEW RATING; I am getting more this way.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

The issue relates with the USB 3.0 controller that is connected to the hub. It is advised to check with the motherboard/USB 3.0 controller manufacturer for a driver update if available.

Also the Drives connected may also need to be initialized using Disk Management.

We apologize for any issues that you are having. As you know we are more than happy to provide our customers with a hassle free exchange when a product is defective.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks for me

Pros: Works as advertised. Clones drives and connects to PC via USB 3.0.

Cons: Drives to not sit snugly in slots, there is wiggle room. Should only be used in a secure stable location where it will not be bumped or jostled. I have not used the eSATA connector to connect to a PC.

Other Thoughts: I have used this to clone 5 different drives both 3.5" and 2.5" sizes. I have cloned identical sized drives and to a larger drive. When cloning to a larger drive it is required to expand the partition size through the OS tools after cloning to utilize the entire space of the new drive. Three of the drives were reported as "Failing" by the OS/PC that they were running in. In two of the cases the cloning process took a long time, but when allowed to run successfully cloned the entire contents of the failing drive. In one case it took about 22 hours to clone a 640Gb drive to a 1Tb drive, but it did complete successfully. I have not tried to clone from or to a SSD. I have cloned from 7200 RPM to a 5400 RPM drive and from 5400 to 7200. This little device has saved me much time that would have been spent reinstalling OS, software, etc. and then trying to manually recover the data off the failing hard drives.

1 out of 5 eggsCloning and 3.0 USB Marketing backed up by low quality electronics

Pros: USB 3.0 along with built in drive cloning. Easy mounting of disk drives with a decent length of USB cabling included. When it worked, it was fast and cloning was easy.

Cons: failed after 6 months and only a couple of uses. Both bays will not keep connected to disk drives. Drives reset and disappear from windows only to come back again leading to a format request. Website does really have support options. Should have stuck with the name brand and not a china import by a company that didn't bother changing the OEM's logo.

1 out of 5 eggsQuality Control - Bad

Pros: Features sound excellent - USB 3.0, or eSATA, plus stand alone cloning of drives. If only they would work.

Cons: This Docking station failed after 1 use, using USB 3.0 connection.
Subsequently I tried eSATA, and none of the drives I tried showed up at all. Then I tried USB 3.0 again and got weird results. To be sure I then used a Rosewill USB 2.0 Docking station and the HD's worked as expected. Conclusion the Connectland Docking Station is broken.

Other Thoughts: Too many computer items have non-existent Quality Control. Just look at HD's or Motherboards, and stuff like this Docking Station. I would be happy to pay more and get products that work.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Having this happen is unacceptable. We perform quality checks on our inventory before we cover them in protective plastic packaging. We have tested many of the inventory in our lab and perhaps the product you received was overlooked.

However, we still would like to find out more about this over current issue you been experience. If it is really a design or production issue, we will work out a solution with you.

We are more than happy to provide all of our customers with a prompt exchange whenever a product becomes defective.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointing

Pros: Heavy, feels sturdy, no fear of tipping over when loaded with drives. Included USB3 and eSATA cables. I liked the concept of 2 drive bays in one unit...

Came in a European Connectland branded box with US power adapter inside.

Cons: One of the HDD activity LEDs does not work at all.

USB3 suffers frequent disconnects. No SMART support over USB.

eSATA has frequent errors and results in data corruption. Computer shows it is only connecting as 1.5Gbit/sec even though the stated specs say it should be 3.0Gbit/sec. Both my computer and this unit have JMicron chipsets so I would hope there's no incompatibility between them.

Forget about max linnk speeds printed on box, the speeds are pretty slow. If you are lucky you might hit 90MB/sec (between the errors and disconnects), but if you have 2 drives mounted then you can only go 45MB/sec each. And if you are writing to one drive, it blocks reading from the other drive, so it's easy to get really slow in a hurry.

Other Thoughts: I have not tried the cloning feature as I have had no need for it.

I am using Linux. I have a few other USB3 and eSATA adapters and enclosures from other brands which do not suffer these problems, so I'm fairly sure it's not a problem on my PC, but you never know. USB3 in particular has a bad reputation, but at least the eSATA should work reliably and at the advertised link speed!

In hindsight it would be faster and more reliable to just buy 2 cheap USB2 hdd adapters and run them in parallel.

Overall this unit was a massive disappointment and it has been collecting dust as I'm afraid to use it and ruin my data, and would feel ashamed to resell it to someone else knowing that it does not work properly.

I bought this when it had zero reviews, and I waited beyond the return period before trying it, so lesson learned.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

This product was made to cater to Microsoft and Macintosh Operating Systems. Perhaps the chipset could not negotiate a proper USB 3.0 connection for Linux distributions.

1 out of 5 eggs2 of 2 were defective - SYBA Tech Support MIA

Pros: Economical, eSATA and USB 3.0 support

Cons: I ordered two and returned both. One was DOA and the other partly worked when connected via eSATA.

Would be possible break tab off of HD secondary to poor design.

Other Thoughts: The docking stations have already been returned; I have still not received an email response from SYBA support after 13 days (time of this review).

Unimpressive web site with meager support resources and no apparent telephone contact number. Oddly, support is also available via FAX.

4 out of 5 eggsSecond times a charm

Pros: First unit I received had an inoperable USB interface. The replacement unit is fully functional. USB and eSATA interfaces are working. I tested USB and eSata on Windows XP and Windows 7; and USB on Mac OSX Mountain Lion with a 2.5" and 3.5" drive. No problems mounting the drives. Transfer speeds look good. I was getting 30MB/s on USB 2.0 on the mac.

I also tested the clone function, and that is also working well. I cloned a 160GB drive to another 160GB drive containing two partitions, a small FAT partition, and a larger NTFS partition. The clone took around 30 minutes, and looks like an identical copy.

Cons: 3.5" drives are a bit tricky to get seated, and are somewhat wobbly. A chunk of cardboard would help stabilize the drives when docked. 2.5" drives are held much more securely.

1 out of 5 eggsThe original and RMA units were defective - avoid this model

Pros: Features look good in print.

Cons: The original and RMA units were defective… I think the product/model is actually defective.

The replacement unit would not recognize hard drives under USB and would only recognize the drive in the first bay under eSATA.

Other Thoughts: Recommendation - AVOID this model

The Newegg online RMA system did not properly generate the RMA for the bundled I/O card or the shipping label under my ShopRunner membership. A telephone presentative was able to quickly resolve the problem.

Newegg should seriously consider pulling this model.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsDefective Product

Pros: Works great when connected. Decent Speeds.

Cons: Worked with both of my 2.5" HDD's at first (Couple of days) then stopped working with one of them. The hdd indicator light stayed lit on the HDD like it was stuck trying to read the drive. The computer kept saying the drive needed to be formatted. I checked the drive with two different USB external enclosures (the ones I was replacing for this device) and they both read the device. The HDD (Samsung Spinpoint 4 HM640JJ) worked fine on my old usb 2.0 enclosures but would not work at all with this device.

Other Thoughts: I am RMAing it for a refund and will purchase a more reliable product.
