Good unit
- Pros: Set it up, everything worked right away. Flawless display on my 1900x1200 resolution monitor switching between a Windows XP notebook connected via a dock and my Linux desktop.
- Cons: In order for any hotkey functionality to work, you have to plug the keyboard into the front of the unit. I don't like this from a design aspect and wish they had put the ports on the back as this would have been cleaner with less wires showing. Also, if you have a unit off and try to switch the focus there, the monitor for some reason continues showing the active display, but with terrible flickering.
- Other Thoughts: One of the other reviewers mentioned something about advanced keyboard functionality not working. I am not sure what he is referring to since all of the media center keys work fine in my setup. It appears to pass the USB signal directly to the computer as a straight cable would. Maybe this is if you use the PS/2 to USB adapter.
360 + computer to monitor = working
- Pros: I use a HDMI to DVI-D cable to plug my XBOX 360 into my monitor. Anyone doing this knows the hassle that comes with this when you want to use your computer, yet keep your console running (or in other words switch between the two). This worked right out of the box with my 1680 x 1050 monitor resolution; my very own DVI-D Dual Link cables work fine along with it. There is no graphical degrading, no sound problems on my computer's end trying to process the signal from the monitor, it simply couldn't work any better than this ATEN switch.
- Cons: Not really a Con, but my set-up is my computer into port 1 and 360 into port 2. If I turn off my 360 while on port 2 channel, the switch shows my computer's display while still on the port 2 channel. The obvious drawback to this is there will be color distortion apparent, but this is fixed by swapping to the proper port 1 channel.
Again not a problem at all, but something I'd point out as of now (heck, it's the ONLY problem I can find)!
- Other Thoughts: Makes a high pitched beep when you swap port channels, my last switch didn't do this so I kind of like it.
Great quality KVM!
- Pros: Works great with many computers, monitors and doesn't seem to be picky about certain keyboards or mice as long as you aren't expecting the enhanced functions to work (they won't on any KVM, KVM's emulate basic mice/keyboard HID devices)
- Cons: About a second delay when you switch devices to the keyboard/mouse working. Couple other KVM's didn't exhibit this behavior, easily forgivable though.
Not a con of this switch but a con of DVI in general. When computers boot the video card does some basic handshaking with the monitor to figure out what it can do. If the switch isn't switched to that computer while booting the video card defaults to a known "safe" mode that it knows works. Just a quirk of DVI that doesn't lend itself to KVM but easy to live with.
- Other Thoughts: Steep price but when you want it to just work ATEN just does.
