1 out of 5 eggsTo Much Trouble

Pros: Small & Fast when it works

Cons: Doesn't work consistently. Disconnects and re-connects constantly.

Other Thoughts: I had some mSATA drives availale after I upgraded some Ultra Books and purchased the Mushkin so I could use externally. Right from the start I had problems with the device disconnecting and re-connecting, whether I was transferring data or not. This happened on multiple systems.
I contacted Mushkin and they were very responsive. I sent it in and they stated the mSATA board was a little small and not sitting in the connector properly. They put a small piece of foam in to hold the drive securely.
It worked for a couple of months and started to act up again. The disconnecting/re-connecting got real bad, then the drive went dead. Not knowing if it was the enclosure or the drive I put in another mSATA drive, it worked for a little while, now the second one is dead.

I loved the size and the speed was great, but other than that I can't recommend this product.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Product

Pros: Small
USB 3.0

Cons: Where do I start!! First the cable that it came with never worked with this product let alone with other USB 3.0 devices.

Next while this does work and is very fast, I constantly have to remove it and re-seat the ssd because it comes loose. When that happens Windows says that it needs formatted. If I re-seat it windows will see the device.

1 out of 5 eggsFast.... When it works.

Pros: It is fast, compact, sturdy (metal)

Cons: Just stops working. It receives power but is not seen by the computer. I had it replaced once after just under 1 year and the replacement stopped working after 3 uses.

Other Thoughts: I want this device to work, but it has a horrible track record and It is incredibly inconvenient when you need it and it just stops working. You can't just pop the drive out and extract the data. It's a great concept, but it is flawed terribly. I don't recommend buying this item. It's not worth the frustration.

4 out of 5 eggsReliable with more power via Y-cable

Pros: Windows To Go Enterprise edition installs, boots and runs great from installed SSD drive.

Cons: Included cable doesn't provide enough power.

Other Thoughts: Installed a Crucial M550 mSATA drive and experienced problems initially; failed file transfers, drive disappearing etc. Then tried with a USB 3.0 "Y-cable" that has two 'A' connectors; one for data and power via a USB 3.0 port and a second to draw additional power from an available USB 2.0 or 3.0 port. With the new (micro-B to two male-A) Y-cable drive has worked great; boots Windows 8.1 very fast with around 400MB/s speeds via "USB Attached SCSI Protocol" (UASP) compatible USB 3.0 port on ThinkPad.

1 out of 5 eggsrestarts all the time

Pros: Really nice, small, compact size which can fit easily into your pant/shirt pocket.

Cons: Completely unreliable! It doesn't hang, but it restarts on a consistent basis, thus not allowing for any type of long duration usage.
Want to transfer large files? - NOPE! can't do that
Want to run programs directly of the drive? - NOPE! so sorry!

Other Thoughts: Avoid this and the Kingwin drive, they are identical and both disconnect and reconnect consistently.

and what's up with all those 5 egg reviews!? All lies!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat tiny storage

Pros: It is small, rugged, well built and easy to work with. Paired with a SSD Msata drive, it is also very very fast. And, it looks good. Finally, every time my wife saw it she would say "Mushkin" in her sexy little voice. Big pro!

Cons: I didn't find any, it does what it says it will do and does it very well. It is a case, and I haven't found any problems with it. One screw was a little hard to remove initially, and I notice it gets very warm after being plugged in for long periods of time of heavy use. Neither is a problem, but thought I would mention.

The big CON, is I gave it away as a gift and couldn't keep it myself. Would love to have one.

Other Thoughts: I bought this and a Mushkin Enhanced MKNSSDAT240GB 240GB Mini-SATA drive as a gift for a great friend. I really wanted to buy one for myself, but couldn't justify it. I let him build it but asked him for details. He said it was extremely easy, one screw was a bit hard to deal with, but that was the only issue. And that wasn't really a problem at all. So he brings it to me to test out and I give it a go. It's blazing fast, small, silent, but I did notice it got a bit warm, but not hot.

Transferring files to and from it was very fast 80MBS from my unraid server, which is the same speed I get copying to my desktop from my unraid server over the Gb network.

I hope to get one for myself in the near future. Zero concern about this case. It looks awesome, is rugged and fast and SMALL.

5 out of 5 eggsNearly Flawless

Pros: No DoA units. Reliable connection.

Cons: Gets really hot. Concerned about drive longevity.

Other Thoughts: I've purchased so many mSATA to USB3 enclosures. Nearly all of the have the same footprint as this one: Kingston, Mushkin, and three brands I've never heard of. Except for these Mushkin units, none of them was reliable. In every other case, it seems like the connection to the adapter board is flimsy. Even swapping around USB cables, only Mushkin was consistently reliable.
On the consumer Newegg site, the Mushkin units have so-so ratings. I ordered 5 of these, expecting 1 failures...I now have 1 extra! I'm guessing Mushkin resolved the issues they and other manufacturers were having.
These units do get uncomfortably hot. My SandForce mSATA drive is worse than my Samsung EVO's but based on estimated active drive power consumption alone, this is not surprising.
I love the form factor of these. Having 1TB portable backups (1 each for my Linux and Windows laptops, and my MacBook Pro) is really convenient. If you do this also, don't forget to encrypt your drives!
