4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works, very cheap.

Cons: Metal tends to deform and screw holes off center making assembly difficult and there are no spare screws in case you lose one which you will because they are tiny.

2 out of 5 eggsJunk outer casing

Pros: the SATA to USB adapter board on it's own is good, & came with a free mini Phillips head screwdriver, & that's the only reasons it gets 2 eggs.

Cons: the case is very cheaply made, and does not fit together very well, and ended up bending very badly, & the USB cable is really cheaply made, and fell apart after about 1 hour of use, also the bonus fake leather sleeve ripped apart after putting the drive in it, & then pulling it back out, as it was a really tight fit.

Other Thoughts: I knew this was not gonna be the most impressive case when i bought it, but I did not except it too be so bad I had to end up throwing the mesh shell in the recycle bin on the first day, and salvaging the SATA to USB board for test bench work duties. I will not be buying this case again, and will be spending a bit more next time i need an external case for a HDD. Sometimes you truly do get a good deal, and other times like this you truly get what you pay for.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks fine

Pros: Good ventilation. Looks good. Includes carrying case.

Cons: The plastic protective sheets for the PCB defeats the purpose of mesh cover. The cover hard to align, screws are hard to install.

4 out of 5 eggsWhat you expect

Pros: Very light weight as well as very small. Is a very unique enclosure and I was surprised that it actually came with 2 small plastic sheets to layer between the drive and the inside wall of the inclosure, which were almost perfectly cut to follow the perimeter of the enclosure.

Cons: Yes as others have said it comes with a screw driver slightly smaller than the screw heads which can cause some stripping of the screws. If your intending to swap enclosures you should have enough knowledge to use your own tools you trust, and actually even using the screw driver with a few extra seconds of patience and knowing how to actually put a screw in right I found the screw driver to easily do the job. The screw holes can be a little out of alignment but again with some patience and care it can easily be done right with out angling the screws.

Other Thoughts: Its $10 and the price will always convey the quality. I can't understand why people were expecting NASA grade quality and how every one seems to be in a rush to slap it together. Also note that I find the transfer boards to burn out and die even one higher end enclosures and the reliability at fault seems to be more with the overall industry standard design than directly with the individual manufacturer.

Side note: I like that I have an extra small screw driver now, I'm sure it will help that age old problem of not being able to find one when you need it.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Its cheap....

Cons: Did not work when I got it. Was only $10 so no biggie. The hard drive went in fine and would get recognized for about 10 seconds then would drop from the list of selectable drives and was no longer usable until I disconnected and reconnected. Then 10 seconds later, it would go out again.

Other Thoughts: And yes, I used both USB ports for power. So I went to the local electronics store really quick and found a similar product by IOCell, popped in my drive and it worked fine so its not my drives fault.

1 out of 5 eggsNot good

Pros: None

Cons: Flimsy design, difficult to work with compared to other external enclosures. Burned out immediately, killing a 300gb hdd.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the Price

Pros: Alright...The whole reason I got this enclosure was for the design and color. And in those two aspects, this thing is awesome. I was getting tired of the all black enclosure I originally had. This thing fits the bill.

Cons: Well...Instead of cons, I'm going to give some advise.

If you buy this enclosure, pre-screw the screws into the holes before securing the covers. That way, it will be easier to screw in the screws.

Use a different screw driver than the one that is provided. The one that is provided doesn't work all too well.

Other Thoughts: Other than those few cons, this is an awesome product. Great design, good for air flow, it's light, and it makes use of older laptop hard drives. I'm happy with the purchase.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Design but Some issues

Pros: Appearance - This is an attractive and somewhat unique enclosure. I found the mesh/plastic look quite appealing and it matches my white antec p180 perfectly, although that was a coincidence.

Size - Very near the size of the drive plus maybe an inch on the back for the adapter.

Materials - The mesh actually allows this enclosure to be thinner (and lighter) than any of my other 2.5" enclosures. Between the shock-absorbing, plastic ring in the center of the enclosure and the natural spring of the mesh I have no doubt it will survive significant shock despite the small size. The extreme ventilation of the drive should also keep drive temperatures down, although it allows every sound to pass through as well.

Features - Mini USB is nice, since we all have and need them for other devices anyway. Every other Nippon Lab's 2.5" enclosure I've had has had a USB A to USB A cable, which is actually quite uncommon. The separate power/activity LEDs are also nice for diagnostic purposes.

Cons: Quality Issues - The design requires many, small screws which are fairly weak and easily stripped. This problem is exacerbated by the tiny screw driver which comes with the enclosure, which is simply too small for the screws. They did decide to add 2 extra screws which I needed after stripping out the first 2.

Build Issues - Lining those screws up to the corresponding pre-drilled holes is difficult. Like every other Nippon labs enclosure I've owned I had to decide what was "good enough" and was left with screws inserted at minor angles. Insertion of the drive itself was also somewhat difficult. I should have removed the top mesh as well instead of simply forcing the drive in from the bottom.

Accessories - As mentioned above the included screwdriver did more harm than good. The sleeve is horrible, the manual also did not correspond to this model and was no help at all.

Price - You can get a drive in an enclosure for $20 anymore; $10 seems a bit steep for just an enclosure

Other Thoughts: To be honest this review sounds worse than the product really is. If they'd simply stop putting the generic (and damagingly small) screwdriver, and incorrect manual in the box I'd have given it a 4/5. I am happy overall with the finished product, there were just some frustrations getting there.

This has become the 4th enclosure for my trusty old 320 gig portable drive. As you might have guessed: I am rather hard on these things. I'm not expecting it to last very long, but maybe it will surprise me.
