As an exceptionally powerful and useful hardware tool, this standalone hard drive duplicator turns what used to be a daunting and complicated task into a simple push of a button! Any 2.5" or 3.5" SATA hard drive or SSD, with any operating system, disk format, or file type, can be duplicated without a computer connection or any advanced computer skills. If the original drive was bootable, the copied drive will be bootable. Hidden files, system files, applications, license keys are all copied intact.

How can this be so easy? The Retriever simply makes an exact copy of every block sector of the source drive to the target drive. If the target drive is larger than the source drive, the extra capacity can be assigned to another partition.

The Retriever can also be connected via USB 3.0 to your PC or Mac when not duplicating drives.

  • newegg One-button Duplicate With a simple button-push, the Retriever starts sector-by-sector standalone hard disk drive cloning, without the need of a computer – perfect for data backup or generating copies for distribution.
  • newegg Extra Function as an USB 3.0 Dual-Bay Dock Any combination of 2.5" or 3.5" HDDs or SSDs can be easily loaded to this dual-bay dock. Connect to your computer via SuperSpeed USB 3.0 and you’ll have instant access to up to two drives (Supports JBOD: Just a Bunch of Disks).

4 out of 5 eggsDevice is okay, reviews NIT

Pros: Easy duplication, which is all I use it for.

Cons: None up until now.

Other Thoughts: I've used this device for disk clones for so long, I forgot where I bought it. Probably 2+ years. I use this for backing up my primary development laptop - it's easy. Recently, it's started rejecting copies to some target backup drives. Support says bad drive, I say baloney.

Anyway, I'm looking into the power supply issue. For those of you who posted "use a high quality power supply" - would you PLEASE include what you purchased?

It would make your post so much more helpful.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great value

Cons: Destination drive must be at least as large as the source even if the data would fit on the destination

Other Thoughts: I just needed a way to easily make an exact copy of some hard drives so I could have a way to restart some machines in the event of a hard drive problem. I like the fact that this device doesn't need to be attached to a PC to make a clone

2 out of 5 eggsOK docking base, no USB 3.0 though

Pros: very easy to use docking base, good duplicator

Cons: will not work with Windows 8.1 in USB 3.0 mode

Other Thoughts: I picked this up for my brand new ROG 750JH laptop. whenever i plugged int into the USB 3.0 ports i get "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" I have to plug in a USB 2.0 hub and run the dock through it to get it to recognize. I tried a firmware update from cavalry's website. The firmware application said I did not have the correct device/device not connected.

It works fine as a USB 2.0 device but I bought it specifically for USB 3.0 speeds.

I'm very disappointed, until it gets fixed I can't recommend it as a dock, just as a duplicator.

1 out of 5 eggsGood concept, not worthy device

Pros: Drop device in, press button to replicate

Cons: Wouldn't replicate some drives
Small form factor 3.5" drives loose when seated

Other Thoughts: Tried to copy some 80G drives, it wouldn't even recognize them as "master" drive. Did work for few copies of 40G and 160G drives, but stopped working after about six or seven copies. Device acts like it's working, but no data is copied.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: -USB 3 makes transfers to/from the device very quick. While not as fast as my WD Elements USB 3, few platter drives are including my internal hard drive.
-Allows unattended duplication.
-Allows the user to quickly connect a drive to a computer to "see what is on it" or check the validity of the drive.
-Allows the user to transfer data quickly.
-Works with 3.5 or 2.5 drives.

Cons: -Not really made for laptop use. What I mean by that is the physical stability is truly lacking. It does not have enough weight with 2 X 3.5" drives to stay upright unless it is on a desk or table. I would not even try it with a laptop on my lap and the unit on the table next to my chair. It would be much too easy to knock the unit over or knock loose one of the drives.
-Attaching 2.5" drives does not give a solid feel. I always wonder if they are even plugged in. There is no internal or external mechanism that secures a 2.5" drive in place. I could easily see one of the drives getting bumped and coming loose.
-On one of my bigger jobs, after transfer multiple megabytes of data successfully, it suddenly quit responding. There is a suggestion in another review to try a different 12 V/3+ amp power supply so I think I will.
-The plastic covers they sell as protective add-ons you can buy are totally worthless. Only the 2.5” was available and I made the mistake of buying one. The covers do not work well at all with the 2.5” drives and in fact hurt the already bad feel of connecting a drive.

Other Thoughts: I will still use it, but only at my office desk, not anywhere else. The convenience makes it a keeper. However, if I had it to do over again, I would have looked for some other brand that felt more physically stable.

3 out of 5 eggsFixed it

Pros: Worked well when it worked. Simple takes up little space.

Cons: Quit after about 5 copies. Was flaky before that worked with one drive but not two. Dropped drives in windows.

Other Thoughts: Well for you guys with these same issues, flaky operation doesn't seem to work with two drives, drops a drive. Problem is with the power supply. It says 9 volt 300 ma. with one drive it read 10 to 11 volts DC, as soon as the second drive is added it dropped to 6 volts and neither drive would spin up. I replace the power adapter with a 10 volt 1 amp unit I had works like a charm now. If you have the same issues try it.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent value. Still going after ~ 3 yrs.

Pros: Makes a FULL backup and plug-and-play restore a breeze (if you don't mind pulling the drives first). Have used dozens of times as a dock (even as a boot drive) and duplicator (both 2.5" and 3.5" ; Mac, PC, and TiVo too).

Cons: None really as yet.

Other Thoughts: Re: the heat "issue" mentioned in some reviews. Ever paranoid, I usually direct a small USB fan airflow across the drives during a very long duplication. They've always stayed relatively cool that way.

3 out of 5 eggsduplication makes one unusable

Pros: Duplication is fast.

Cons: After you duplicate, only one can be used at a time.

5 out of 5 eggsHow did I ever do without?

Pros: Does what it says it does.

Cons: That I didn't buy it sooner.

Other Thoughts: Honestly the single wisest purchase of the year. Flawlessly duplicated a Macintosh laptop drive, and several PC drives since I've owned it.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes the job

Pros: Does what it says. Took about an hour to duplicate a 500 gb hd.
Not bad at all and the price is right

Cons: None so far .

Other Thoughts: Highly recommend
