It works, and you can chain FireWire devices
This review is from: Seagate STAE105 FreeAgent GoFlex Desk desktop adapter – Firewire 800 /USB 2.0
Pros: This base for the GoFlex drives plugs into the drive OK -- it doesn't seem insecure, though I would not want to be swapping these out five times a day. It's not totally clear from the pictures, but this device has two separate FireWire 800 ports, as well as a mini-USB 2.0 port. So you can chain FireWire devices, which is very handy. In general, it seems like a good idea to have these swappable bases, allowing you to upgrade to USB 3.0 some time in the future... though it remains to be seen if this makes sense in practice. Apple may never put USB 3.0 on their computers, so I may never use this option.
Cons: This device forms the base for an external hard drive. Because the base is no wider than the drive, the drive tips over too easily. The obvious solution is to just always use your drive laying on its side. Takes up more desk space, but is more secure. Fortunately, this device works well in that configuration.
Other Thoughts: I bought a 2TB Seagate GoFlex drive that comes with a USB 2.0 base. Then I replaced it with this device, which has both USB 2.0 and FireWire 800. This seems silly. Why not just include both USB and FireWire as the standard? Then you could pay more for a USB 3.0 base later.
