3 out of 5 eggsTypical Vantec, a mixed bag

Pros: Looks good, tray works smoothly. It's held up to many swaps in the 2 years I've owned.

Cons: Included fan on my unit is junk, very low quality. Was fine initially out of the box but in a very short time became very noisy. I actually removed it for a bit because it's not really needed in my case but the onboard controller isn't happy when one is not plugged in. I could spoof it but I haven't yet. Instead I keep rapping on the unit when the fan gets all noisy which shuts it up for awhile.

Other Thoughts: Every Vantec item I own or have purchased, and that's a lot of them, has an issue of some sort. Far better quality control is needed. Up the QC, charge a couple more bucks. I'd rather pay a small amount more for something that fulfills what I'm getting it for, and not for just the first week.

3 out of 5 eggsVantec's Quality Control Appears to be Lacking

Pros: Bought six of these to create a unit to wipe several hard drives at once. They fit nicely into a large tower we bought from Newegg a few years back. LCD display is nice. The display shows temperature, fan speed and drive activity.

Cons: Out of the box, one unit had two broken plastic pieces inside that fell out when I first opened it. A second one had a defective fan that wouldn't spin. A small speaker on the back of the unit beeps quite loudly to let you know there's a problem. Half of the units didn't come with hardware (mounting screws, SATA cable, or keys). This wasn't really a problem for me since I needed longer SATA cables for the tower and the unit will work without having to be locked closed. Plus one key fits all, so if I did need to lock them I could use a key from one of the other units. I also found it odd that a SATA device used an old MOLEX power connector, but again not an issue for me as my power supply has six of each.

Other Thoughts: Called Newegg about the two defective units. Had an RMA within minutes. The four units I have installed are working great. Hopefully the replacements will too. We'll see how long they hold up. Within the next couple of months we'll probably have to wipe over 100 hard drives of various sizes. I am going to baby them when swapping out drives. The plastic closing latch doesn't look like it will stand up to repeated use, but I'm going to hope for the best.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Nice LCD display; adjustable fan speed; aesthetically pleasing. I give it a 4 based on the overall design and the fact there has been no issues w/ any of the HDDs I've used so far.

Cons: Weak latch; HDD insertion not quite as smooth as similar adapters; middleman controller board could potentially cause issue w/ some HDDs or possibly be incompatible. If you want the LCD you need the go-between, but that wasn't a sell point for me. Would have gone w/ another brand if it had not been on sale.

Other Thoughts: The flush fascia was the clincher. Similar products have a noticeable bulge in the fascia to compensate for latch or hinge. This unit makes for a clean looking case front. The LCD is not overly bright or covered w/ useless data reads and the fan speed controller is a nice touch. No issues have surfaced while using 2TB & 4TB HDDs. While I doubt the PCB between the HDD and MOBO connectors actually holds a true controller, this unit is not just a passthru cable design, there is the potential of conflict.

1 out of 5 eggsFan Failure

Pros: Looks Nice

Cons: The initial item had a excessive fan noise and the sata port ripped out when I unplugged the sata cable. The RMA I received failed within 2 months. Not worth the shipping to get replaced.

2 out of 5 eggsDied at 13 months - update to my review

Pros: This was a very handy product when it worked. I only used it a couple of times a month for making backups. Having a fan was a good thing, especially with older hard drives that get hot.

Cons: After 13 months of light duty, the LCD screen failed, then the fan failed, then the SATA connection failed. RIP

I thought the LCD screen sounded cool, but after using it, I decided it was pretty useless. An indicator light for file transfers would have been cheaper and maybe more reliable.

Other Thoughts: These hot swap hard drive bays are a great idea. I just wish I could find one that was really well made, with a quiet fan.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect product for backups

Pros: Easy to install.
Easy to use.
Informative display.
Dedicated cooling fan.
Power safe feature - the bay is off if there's no hard drive in it.

Cons: This is a warning for those, who like me has a bunch of older SATA HDD's with dual power supply (both SATA and Molex). Those hard drives won't fit into this rack. The Molex power outlet prevents the drive from being fully inserted. DO NOT TRY TO FORCE IT IN. If an HDD works with the rack, it'll slide in effortlessly.

Other Thoughts: I bought this rack from another retailer, but want to share with Newegg customers too, as I myself like eggy reviews. This device is perfect, and extremely convenient. Just pay attention to the warning I described in cons.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks really great

Pros: Drives stay MUCH cooler than with the Thermaltake unit it replaced.
I noticed that my drives were very hot to the touch after backing them up with the Thermaltake drive rack (a brand which I am absolutely devoted to). No fan on the Thermaltake unit or I would have used that. The fan is a great idea.
This units pops hard drives out much cooler than before.
The graphics are nice, but much more importantly they are informative.
For the price I paid, am happy to give its predecessor to a family member.

I drop 3 degrees from low to high speed on the fans when I do 30 minute drive backups. Even the higher temp is better than before.

Cons: Non At All!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product; 2TB capacity limit seems restrictive

Pros: This is a very promising product for me to edit large uncompressed HD video projects. For that use, swapping multiple industry grade hard drives with a reasonable care in storage and handling seems a far cheaper and simpler alternative than keeping them all online in a Thunderbolt RAID, with better performance.

Cons: I am puzzled by the manufacturer stated 2TB capacity limit in this day and age. Yes 2TB is still a lot, but I wonder if this is a hard limit or just they did not get to test with 4TB yet, or the limit only applies to a subset of OSes. I wish there was any data on this, from the manufacturer or other users. I would feel better about the device.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Hot-swappable (just remember to configure your mobo to have ACHI and/or RAID).
LCD informative.
Adjustable fan speed.

Cons: The built-in fan is somewhat noisey although the speed is adjustable. Lowest settings is very reasonably quiet.
