4 out of 5 eggs...slight issue w/available power

Pros: ...everything I said in my first review

Cons: Power to the bay limited

Other Thoughts: I docked a half egg because it turns out that power available through the dock to **some** 3½ drives is insufficient to get them to spin up. Again "some".

Detail: I had an older 500GB Barracuda 3½ server drive that simply wouldn't spin up, so I had to put it in an external dock to access (and in which, it had no issues). I also had an even older 400GB Hitachi (consumer drive), that was fully accessible, but the dock couldn't spare power to light the LED (not that the LED really matters: the drive was fully accessible while docked ...but I'm just saying that there's a fine line beyond which amperage this dock simply isn't going to be functional).

I've used it with a few 2½ inch drives and not had any issues (and the LED was lit).

...I now figure the bay at 4½ stars (hence the disparity in rating between the two reviews).

I would still recommend the Vantec (who else uses 5 year old drives anyways lol), and would not hesitate to buy another as needed.

But ...YMMV.

5 out of 5 eggs...nothin' but net

Pros: Price. Features. Quality. Works.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Not much too say. It works as advertised.

From examining the details of several similar offerings on Newegg (along with some additional googling), I suspect that this drive is OEM sourced from a single Asian manufacturer, and re-badged and sold through several sellers. IOW, if you can find a similar one on sale, you're probably getting the same maker (that said, I'm entirely satisfied with the quality of the Vantec offering).

The 311S6 a consumer level device, so you will want to exercise reasonable care when you use the lever to insert and extract the drives. If you're ham-fisted, you're going to eventually break it (it uses a metal extraction/insertion lever, but still: be careful).

If your BIOS supports hot swap options on the SATA ports, the Vantec MRK-311S6 will hot swap your drive (you will see the typical Windows Autoplay popup with the Vantec in hot swap that you see when you insert a thumbdrive, for example addition, if the inserted HDD or SDD is large enough to be suitable as a backup device, Windows will add backup to the list; rather convenient, really).

I paired the 311S6 with an AMS DC-111SSBK (also available at Newegg) to add the ability to easily insert 2½ inch drives into the bay (the AMS has a front lever too, so swapping drives remain tool-less). I recommend the 111SSMB as a co-purchase with the Vantec, for additional flexibility. They make a good combo.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Hot Swap Bay - Supports 4 TB at a cheap price

Pros: - Good quality construction
- Supports up to 4 TB hard drives
- Attractive design
- Keys included to lock the latch
- Compatible with SATA I/II/III

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This is a really nice hot swap bay at such a great price ($19.99 at time of purchase). It fit perfectly in my server and looks great. I purposely purchased this item because it supports 4 TB sized HDDs. I have a Western Digital Black 4 TB drive that I would be using to backup my server storage.

Install was as simple as installing any 5.25" add-on. A SATA data cable was included, as well as a SATA power and 4-pin connector cable (used to power the SATA controller card on the device). I did not use the included screws as they did not fit my application (my server required larger screws as it has a tool-less sliding mechanism to lock in add-ons to their external bays).

Once installed, I booted up the server. I inserted the 4 TB HDD and it was not recognized. I checked my Bios and it only had options for Legacy IDE and Native IDE (Not AHCI). Basically this meant my motherboard did not support "hot swapping". What to do?

If your motherboard does not support hot swapping, fear not. An application called HotSwap! (just google it, it's free) is available to turn that frown, upside-down (Shout out to the Dev!). Using this software helped correct my purpose of this device and my backup drive!

I have purchased a few things from Vantec in the past (mainly external HDD enclosures) and have been very impressed with their build quality. This is definitely a winner in my book.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great!

Pros: Works exactly like it's supposed to. Easy install with no issues. Replaced my older "tray" model and I really like the fact the I can insert the drive without a tray.

Cons: Doesn't fix me breakfast.
