4 out of 5 eggsWorks OK for a while

Pros: Installed easily and would allow easy replacement of drives if needed. I had no problems installing the frame or the drive in the carrier as some stated. The fans on my 2 racks were quiet at the start.

After 8 months I started to see 1 drive in my array failing and going offline. Replaced the drive with a more expensive one. Same problem. swapped cables and SATA ports. Same issue. Removed from mobile rack and the problem was resolved. 1 of my 2 units was not working 100%, no hard drive damage but could have resulted in data loss.

Cons: Fans start making noise after 6 months of use. Limited instructions provided with unit, unit failed after 8 months of service.

1 out of 5 eggsDo Not Waste Your Money

Pros: The idea is good, the implementation is not.

Cons: I ordered two of these. Each was defective in the same way: The locking latch handle was broken on the right side. I returned them, got two more, and the handles were broken, but in slightly different ways. I have used Kingwin IDE trays for years with no problems, but these look like they suffered from poor assembly, and NO Quality Control. Wake Up Kingwin, you lost a good customer.

Other Thoughts: I had ordered a spare tray for these units. I use them in a RAID1 setup, and switch trays occasionally to store offsite. The spare tray was perfectly fine. I returned it since I had to return all the racks.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT PURCHASE

Pros: New Egg stands by what they sell. They RMA'd the product and I received my refund.

Cons: I installed this product per the instructions on the back of the box as there were none on the inside. It's a fairly simple and straight forward piece of hardware. However, when I inserted my functioning 320GB drive it wouldn't recognize it. Low and behold it trashed the drive. Shorted it out. Which was realized when trying to connect it directly.
I called the manufacturer to get some resolution and they had a secretary call me back and ask that I email them back with the issue. Hmmm, what kind of support staff do they have? A one man show? Makes you wonder. Well, they of course were not able to solve the issue and when they suggested I try another drive I had to say no. I've emailed them 3 times now requesting a resolution to the drive their device destroyed. So far, no luck.
If you value your hard drives don't purchase this product.

3 out of 5 eggsLoud

Pros: Works as expected. Aluminum feels very sturdy, though the plastic parts do feel flimsy, it doesn't feel like it'll break or anything.

Cons: - Louder than I expected. I find it odd, since no one mentioned the fan being loud. It's not a tempest or anything but it's at that annoying level where if you're in a relatively silent room, it'll irritate you.
- Screw to secure harddrive. I was expecting the caddy to be secured by another means, maybe a small latch, but it is not. You screw the HDD in just like you would in a built in rack, so you'll have to buy another caddy to put in drives if you want to swap back and forth, or else you'll have to unscrew and rescrew.

Other Thoughts: People have reviewed that the drive stays cool, but I find that it's pretty warm. Not hot, but does warm up a bit. Nothing too bad, so it's not a con, but it's far from keeping cool. I was hoping some space in between the top and bottom of the hdd to the innards of the caddy, but it's pretty snug.

5 out of 5 eggsJust as Advertised

Pros: Works great replacing an optical drive in a desktop. Easy to install

Cons: Took a little force to get it to set at first. Not hot-swappable.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great, easy to install

Pros: The rack will accept either the SATA power cable or a regular 4 pin molex conection, this makes it easy to provide power to the drive. The rack easily installed in my mini tower case and the fan should keep the drive cool.

Installed a new 1.5TB drive in the tray noting to not over tighten the screws. I snugged them down and had not issues with the cover not fitting. Slide the tray in the rack and powered up. No issues at all. Will use these racks again.

Cons: Watch the screws as they are different sizes / threads, hard to tell them apart as they are in the same bad and look alike. The heads are different so once you see that, you can tell them apart. The green drive light on the front of the tray does not flash with access to the disk. Not a big deal but I like to see which drive the system is reading.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Quality but...

Pros: Sturdy Aluminum construction, fan, looks good. High quality for the price.

Cons: I should have read the reviews first. Unit requires hard drive to be secured with screws into the caddy. Since my objective was to quickly swap out drives, I either have to unscrew the drive each time I swap, or buy more caddies. I'll take an egg away for that since it wasn't really noted in the product description.

Other Thoughts: I hope NewEgg has caddies for cheap. I am going to search now.

5 out of 5 eggsBuying more

Pros: Just as I noted earlier, you need to buy more caddies or trays as you expand systems. I've now used this system for more than 2 years. Drives stay cool (with the help of the fan) and this system makes it easy to keep different bootable operating systems on separate drives, or easily swap in and out data drives. I am building a new system that will have no internally installed drives...just using these caddies and trays. The metal is very durable, solid feel. If the mini-fan fails or goes out of round (makes noise) you can easily replace it. I haven't had to replace one yet, but I did have this issue with prior caddies for ATA drives. If you want more cooling, you can upgrade the fans -- but the ones included are pretty darn good.

Cons: The lock mechanism does not turn the power on and off to the drive, as you would experience with keyed systems. So if you don't want the drive to power up, just pull it out slightly. This is really not an issue. The greater con is keyed systems -- fumbling around for a lost key. I had those for keyed systems for years...I don't like keys anymore.

Other Thoughts: To reiterate:
-- do not hot swap your drives unless BOTH your drives and your motherboard support hot swapping. There's no technology in the caddies to support this function.
-- the drives are held in the trays with four (included) screws. Don't tighten them hard. It squeezes the tray metal, restricting the sliding cover. Just snug, not super tight. And it doesn't need to be super tight.
-- thanks Newegg for being a source. these are hard to find or cost a lot more elsewhere.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I needed

Pros: Aluminum hd tray protects drive when pulled out, knob instead of keyed (I'm bad about losing keys), entire rack acts as a heatsink for the hd, with the fan cooling it all down. Two power supply options, sata if you've got a hookup to spare or molex if that's what you've got, great if like me you used up your sata power hookups on BR + dvd + 2 perm hdd and only have molex power hookups left.

Cons: Knob doesn't kill power to the drive the way keyed systems do, so if you need a switch that kills power to the drive, go with one of their keyed units instead.

Other Thoughts: To the one egg guy: Nowhere in the discription or it's documentation does it claim to be hotswappable, so the burnt drive and unit are your fault, not theirs. 3 out of 4 doa? Coming from Mr. Burning Hotswap I have to wonder whose fault that is.
To the fan complaint: Fan blowing on aluminum heatsink = faster and better cooling than fan blowing air on drive, just look at how cpu heatsinks are set up and it becomes self-explanatory.

4 out of 5 eggsGood quality solution

Pros: I have been using these caddies and trays for > 1 year for my SATA drives. Previously I used a similar system for IDE drives. Difference is this solution is all metal, plus the fan in the caddy is much easier to replace, i.e. more accessible (yes, sometimes the fan needs to be replaced, and there are sources for the fan, no worries). I also like the fact that there is no locking key...that was always an annoyance and really didn't provide much security.

Cons: Not much. Not hot swappable unless your SATA drives and motherboard support hot swapping. So if you want to hot swap, do your homework and buy the right system.

Other Thoughts: Yes, per previous reviewer, if you tighten the four screws down real hard that hold the hard drive in the tray, the sliding top will not fit in the grooves. Just don't tighten them down...don't need to be that hard. Ease up, grasshopper. Glad Newegg is a source, especially for buying more trays. You may have one of two caddies, but if you have lots of drives and you don't want to mess with removing a drive from a tray to replace with another drive, you'll need to buy extra trays for all your drives.
