1 out of 5 eggsGreat if you never ever unplug it

Pros: I've used three of these. In the one computer that I have never disconnected the SATA cable from the motherboard, the enclosure is still working after a couple of years.

Cons: However, with the other two enclosures, the SATA PIN shroud on the enclosure came off after disconnecting the SATA cable. The SATA pins were also bent beyond repair.

2 out of 5 eggs1 out of 2 still work

Pros: When they both worked, it really speed up backups and data transfer.

Cons: On one of them, the shroud for the SATA connector fell off and now it's only useful as an external SATA connector.

5 out of 5 eggsGood removable drive option

Pros: Good design. Works as described.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: For Windows users, ejecting a drive while Windows is on obviously requires drivers and a controller that support hot swap capability. You can however add a drive while it is on and it will be recognized by the OS without any issues.

4 out of 5 eggsEasy SATA Joy

Pros: Allows repurposing of hardware
Quickly add capacity without opening case
Facilitates System imaging and general backups

Cons: Little Doc
Permanent SATA data cable
Possible collision with case front door

Other Thoughts: Great device for quick add or SWAP of OS environment.
Other than obvious Pros above, other family members want to do other things on system, that might disrupt my business use. I get them a HD, they insert it for their purposes, and dont interfere with my business instance. Son with iTunes, torrents, etc, Mrs with photo and video worlds, we can all share beefy machine, each with unique environments.

2 observations about install...

* Fixed SATA cable is for eSata connection only, you need to add another data cable (and power), to rear PCB connection, for any inserted HD.

* To add and/or remove HD while OS is running, you need to add AHCI device drivers while building O.S. This is difficult to do after build, but required for Hot Swap functionality. If inserting/adding HD while powered off, this is not an issue.

5 out of 5 eggsFavorite 5.25" Bay HDD Drive

Pros: -Great price ($25)
-Sturdy construction
-Easy to install
-Easy to use
-Supports any HDD the motherboard does that you'll attach it with
-eSata front port (requires another SATA port on motherboard for use) which allows my Antec MX-1 enclosure(s) to utilize that jack if needed
-You can utilize HDDs as portable drives without an enclosure, which is FAR cheaper than USB drives ($ per GB).
-The spring-loaded door is built well enough to keep most dust from passing through when not being used
-The button requires pressing to install OR release the drive. A *PRO* because it prevents accidental drive installation and helps avoid slamming the drives into place

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Makes backups of the PCs I service extremely easy, with no limitation on storage (like a USB drive) and works dozens of times faster than USB drives. I use "Acronis Backup & Recovery Workstation" for my backups.

It installs into any 5.25" bay which doesn't have a trap door on the computer case bezel. Many pre-built computers have this trap door, intending the bay to be used for burners instead (HP and Dell do this quite often).

It may be possible to still use it, but you run the risk of forcing the bay door to stay open while you have a drive inserted. On the plus side, it might act as dust deterrent.

I suggest purchasing HDD boxes to keep those drives safe from ESD and foreign material, while not in use. Two examples (of those I purchased) are:

Currently I have 2 installed in my Antec Twelve Hundred case, with one burner. I used a labelmaker to label the front edge of the drives. I use ReallyUsefulBoxes products to store

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent all the way!

Pros: I've bought few of those and use them extensively with my backup hard drives. Excellent idea and design, have not had any issues. Easy to install.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I am sick of opening the computer cases every time I have to do large transfers (100GB+), so I am adding one of these to every system I own!

2 out of 5 eggsBad design

Pros: I works

Cons: Although the idea is good the design is poor. Inserting a HDD in the enclosure causes a plastic door to flip up and out of the way. The door's hinge design is very weak and mine broke within the first month. It is usable without the door but I don't use my anymore. I cannot recommend this product.

Other Thoughts: I've build a number of rigs using Antec cases and power supplies. I have always been satisfied with their quality.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent for backup or data transfer

Pros: Great for data transfer and backups. I use these in all my tower builds and some rack-mounts as well. Add a 2TB drive and you have a really, really big thumb drive with excellent data transfer rates. Need to move an entire bootable workspace around? this will do that as well!

Cons: Must press the button to unlock for entry. Near-useless (for me) eSATA port has a hard-wired cable coming out the back.

Other Thoughts: Really, really handy for moving virtual machines between servers and to the colo. Also a really good conversation piece -- pop a hard drive out of your machine like a piece of toast and your tech friends will ooohh and aaahh.

5 out of 5 eggsEasySata Rocks

Pros: Enables the use of more than one HDD for system back up and System Image storing. I have one of these in each of my 5 Desktop computers. And they recieve use every day. Never had a problem.

Cons: They weren't Free.
