4 out of 5 eggsDoes its job perfectly; a bit light duty

Pros: Inexpensive hot-swap access to SATA backplane. No issues in over a year of 24/7 use. What else can you say about a drive enclosure that simply stays out of the way and always works?

Cons: Levers are too prone to false opening (but does not eject drive). Locking mechanism is flimsy. On/off buttons are not lined up with drive slots, so there is some chance for confusion. None of these have been issues for me but they might be in a more industrial-strength application (but in that case your budget is likely higher anyway).

Other Thoughts: I waited over a year before writing the review since many inexpensive server-like items tend to suffer from early failure. Two of these units combined with the Rosewill rackmount case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147101 has been a low cost and very, very satisfying server enclosure with front access and rock-solid stability.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what the doctor ordered

Pros: Beefy enough to not fall apart when you look at it cross eyed. (It's not a tank; but, built well) Functions as advertised. Good bang for the buck (Virtually identical to the Thermaltake model and cheaper to boot). Comes with locking SATA cables.

Cons: The fan in high speed is quite loud. Not a problem for the typically noisy server farm; but, an issue for the home user if you have it in your bedroom or in a media PC.

Also, trying to operate the locking device has a tendancy to pop the handle out. It doesn't eject/disconnect the drive; but, it is annoying all the same.

Since I don't swap drives too often and I put the backplane in a server in my basement, I'm still giving it 5 eggs.

Other Thoughts: The screws used to hold the drives in the tray are unique in my book. They have a very thin head. Perhaps this is normal for this kind of backplane; but, I don't have any spares like this and I wouldn't know where to get more if I lost any of them. Keep track of where they go when changing out your drives!

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Well - LED Lights Seem Off

Pros: Purchased one of these to put in a web hosting server for easier access. While the unit is loud, it gives you the sense that it is taking care of the ventilation requirements.

Cons: Unit isn't really "hot swap". If you have the machine running and put in a hard drive, then push the button to turn on that bay, it kills power for a moment to the other bays. When the hard drives are on, the manual says the LEDs are supposed to be green - and flash orange when there is activity. One bay is green when the drives are on and flashes orange when there is activity - but two others are orange and flash red when there is activity.

Other Thoughts: Makes accessing drives much easier. No more opening the case, taking out screws. With this, you turn the machine off, open the bay and replace (although there are screws that hold the drive to the tray).

3 out of 5 eggsWorks but is LOUD

Pros: It worked out of the box. Easy to set up and the drive bays are easy to use. Nice construction as well. I have a ICY DOCK 4 in 3 that is way harder to manipulate and remove drives. This one is a lot nicer in that regards.

Cons: The fan is very loud. I'm going to have to replace it. I have my WHS in my media closet and you can hear the fan on this unit down the hall. It's already set to the lowest setting as well. On high it sounds like a small hair dryer. It's roughly 3 times louder than the ICY DOCK...

Other Thoughts: You'd think that for the money that they would have a quieter fan.

I took off two eggs for the fan alone just because it is something that is a major pain to hear and something that I will have to pay out of my pocket to fix.

4 out of 5 eggsThey work...loudly

Pros: Came with all the parts.
Seem to be working fine.
They look cheap, but appear OK.
Definitely not for frequent hot swaps.

Cons: The fans have two speeds:

1- Loud
2- Louder

Just silly.

Other Thoughts: I got these instead of the Athena Power units I ordered. Not worth the hassle to return. Seem to be working. Will probably replace the fans with something less insane.

4 out of 5 eggsNice little Cage

Pros: Easy to change hdd's without having to powerdown, and pull the tower side off if a Raid were to fail. Cool temps with 80mm fan and love the design of the trays. Makes wire management in my case much more tolerable.

Cons: Fan is Loud! I have my file server under the stairs in my basment, hooked up to my Gigabit Network and every time I'm either in my washroom or going up the stairs to the main floor of my house, I can hear the fan... even on low settings... yikes...

Other Thoughts: I purchased a Silentx fan to replace the one inside, otherwise I have no real complaints about this unit. Solid buy...

3 out of 5 eggsAdequate: performs great, but rather flimsy

Pros: I ordered two of these SATA backplanes to fit in the front drive bays of a Rosewill RSV-Z4000 4U rackmount case. They fit perfectly and provide me with 8 front-accessible 3-1/2" drives. I have been running the server fully populated with all 8 drives running for about a month with no issues.

I was worried about how evenly the drive temperatures would be, because the fan is really only behind the two middle drives, leaving the upper and lower drives with less airflow (I presume). SMART monitoring of drive temperature shows them to be within one degree of each other at all times.

I did some rough speed measurements to ensure I was getting full SATA II speeds. In a 4-drive RAID10 configuration using Linux software RAID I got sequential reads of over 300 MB/s and writes about 250 MB/s on 10 GB files. That is plenty fast.

Additional SNT trays are inexpensive.

Cons: As others have noted, the lock/unlock levers are pretty flimsy plastic. I'd add that the whole mechanism of locking and unlocking the drives in place is flimsy from levers to plastic locks to very minimal aluminum trays (although that is partly an advantage as it provides good cooling flow). You just have to be really careful, I think.

Another con is that the lights along the side are also online/offline buttons. Wo is me if I accidentally hit one of those buttons (or a curious visitor does) and a drive or two get taken offline. I would really prefer a way to lock everything down -- disable physically as well as electrically locking the drives in.

Other Thoughts: On the whole, with the server containing these backplanes in a cabinet with a normally closed door, there shouldn't be any problem with accidentally removing a drive or accidentally taking one offline, but I worry nonetheless. Curious fingers have a way of finding these opportunities.

The combination of a RSV-Z4000 case and two of these SATA backplanes is an incredible bargain for an 8-drive server setup, with amazingly minimal issues assembling the whole thing. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 eggsworks great

Pros: Works as advertised. Quality worksmanship (smooth edges; all screw holes chamfered)

Cons: possibly the plastic handles but hasn't been an issue so far. as long as you aren't trying to pry on it you should be fine

Other Thoughts: Installed this in an Antec case with four 1.5TB seagate drives. Using the machine with Windows Home Server. The thought is that when the 4 or 5 TB drives are available it will be easy to replace them without the need to power down.
