3 out of 5 eggsIt is what it says.

Pros: Certainly much cheaper than a Drobo.

Solid piece of equipment, heavy even without drives in it. Solid Aluminum. Easy to disassemble (Though a hex wrench is necessary to get the back all the way off to replace the fans)

I like the display lights.

Once I set up the array with SATARAID5 manager and formatted it in Windows (which took a whole day or so), the device is plug and play. I moved it to my other machine with another SiI3132 card I bought w/ LP bracket (dead cheap with E-Blast insider promo code), and it worked with just the drivers Windows 7 pro x64 had put on the SiI3132 card (No GUI component necessary)

Benchmarks w/ Raid 5 setup:

Sequential Read : 74.989 MB/s
Sequential Write : 41.673 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 12.953 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 7.446 MB/s
Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 0.386 MB/s [ 94.3 IOPS]
Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 0.246 MB/s [ 60.0 IOPS]
Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 2.0

Cons: Very loud. Has "High" and "Low" fan settings, even low is very loud, & I don't typically care about noise. After 7 months on Low, full of 5 SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB 7200 RPM drives in a Raid 5 setup without failure, I replaced the fans. Replaced with 2 ENERMAX UC-8EB 80mm Case Fans, however the 3-pin connector is not standard, so I had to switch out the connectors, which is a bit of a pain. New fans don't have as much throughput, but on High, it's about the same throughput as Low with the old fans, but with 800% less sound :D.

Drivers supplied by SNT are terribly out of date, their website is abysmal. For all I know, their support could be nonexistent. I would really be up a creek if I didn't know what I was doing. Silicon Image, manufacturers of the chipsets, are considerably better. You can find all the drivers you need on their site, but both GUI components are confusing, especially in tandem.

No low profile bracket for PCIe card (GRR! minus one whole egg right there.)

Other Thoughts: I wish it controlled the fans based on hard drive activity.

The drive trays are well built, but the securing mechanism is a bit touchy. The locking mechanism is strange, very small, you pretty much need fingernails. Turning the lock before you put the tray in makes it much easier to do, and solves the "touchiness" issue, since it's then locked when you put it in.

I might be missing something, but it came with a set of keys. I still don't know for what they're meant. Hah.

If you know what you are doing, you can certainly get this solid piece of hardware to do what you want it to do.

1 out of 5 eggsPiece of junk

Pros: None.

Cons: Either it loses the PCI Express card drivers in Win Vista or 7 or the drivers do not appear in the device manager. This was the biggest waste of money and I hope I can recover my information from the drives. Do not buy.

2 out of 5 eggsOk price, reliability so-so

Pros: Good price point. Easy to assemble.

Cons: Two GUI interfaces are provided, only one really works and it is not clear which one should be used. It is a bit loud, but pretty much what I expected.
I have this setup as a RAID 10 on a SBS Server 2003 holding a number of shares. The speed is good.
The problem I have had with it is the drive randomly disappears. Over two months it has happened 3 times. Rebooting the server restores the drive, but all the shared folders and permissions have to be setup again, a bit of a pain. So far the crashes have been at idle times over the weekends and I've been able to recover quick enough for business on Monday. If it continues I will have to go to another solution.

Other Thoughts: I contacted SNT by email over the weekend and did not receive an answer on Monday, so I called. Apparently support is overseas. The info I sent was forwarded on and I was told to expect an answer in a day or two.

3 out of 5 eggsOnes you set it up the it works fine.

Pros: Well, it is a good buy for the price. I am useing two HITACHI Deskstar HD32000 IDK/7K in RAID 1 failure rate and it is working now pretty good.

Cons: It took me a while to figure out where the drivers for Win 7 were. Material is not the best in detail on how to installed the driver. After a few hours I got it working on my Win 7.

Other Thoughts: Unless you are computer savvy, stay away from it. It will give you nightmare on Win 7. However, after it is setup and running your should not experience any major issues.

3 out of 5 eggsworks

Pros: fast swapping of the hd's is a big plus
I bought to quickly move storage to multi computers

Cons: old drivers for pci port multiplier. took awhile to get it to work on win7 x64. Intel drivers would not allow the device to start.

1 out of 5 eggsIt's a Dinosaur - do not buy

Pros: The hardware aspects of the enclosure are nice. It's a solid enclosure with aluminum frame recieving 5 aluminum trays, each tray with a nice ratcheting lock mechanism.

Cons: Software support stops at Windows XP/Server 2003. There is no software support for Vista or Win7. Clicking on the manufacturers product website you get a pdf file dated 2006 with no links for new drivers or software.

Do not purchase under any circumstances.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!!

Pros: I had been looking for an external enclosure for a long time. I was looking into the DROBO but found this with similar functionality for cheaper. Simply works great!! I'm running Linux so I haven't tried the software that comes with it, but it recognizes both my SATA I and SATA II drives. Throughput is fantastic! Blows my old USB 2.0 external hard drive out of the water! It's cheaper than a DROBO but you're not sacrificing any functionality. Don't hesitate a bit!

Cons: The fans are somewhat noisy. Not terrible, but that is the first thing that I noticed when I fired it up. I'm running the fans at the lowest level and I'm used to it now. Just something to think about when you first plug it in.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for an external enclosure to create a RAID setup, this is the perfect setup...
