2 out of 5 eggsgreat in theory

Pros: 3 3.5" bays in 2 5.25" bays
aluminum construction

Cons: Not universal fit

Other Thoughts: Bought for use with norco rpc-231 2U case.
Turns out the unit is too big to fit the cage for norco case,
had to remove the norco 2 bay drive cage because the unit
was too big to fit inside despite having cutouts that were clearly intended to make it fit a normal 2 bay cage.
Without the cage nothing to secure the 3 bay unit with so its loose, but tight enough of a squeeze where I will just live with it. Will have to try another 3 bay unit next time.

4 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Aluminum frame
HDD activity indicators
SATA 3
Simple to install and use

Cons: The included fan is very audible and uses a micro 3 pin connector. So you'll either need to find a quieter fan that uses a micro 3 pin, find a voltage reducer with a micro 3 pin or wire in a resistor. I took the fan out since I only use this Hotswap bay for backups, imaging, clones etc.

Other Thoughts: It's the best one I've used.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect backplane

Pros: Easy to install, works with wide variety of OS (linux included), only needs two power ports for three drives, fans to keep those tight drive cool

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Not the prettiest and may not match your case, but if this is in a storage server it doesn't matter.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Hardware

Pros: Only needs two power plugs.
Switches for fan power and LED activity
Fan is quiet and airflow is not blocked by SATA/SAS backplane
Trayless means very fast drive swap

Cons: Switches are hard to reach after installation and especially after plugging in cables. That said, you shouldn't need to toggle them once it's in.

Other Thoughts: Aluminum casing feels solid and is an extremely tight fit. Don't be afraid to push a little hard to get it into your tower. Harddrives slide in and out easily with no scraping and are held rather securely by the steel spring on the back of each slot's door.

5 out of 5 eggs Updating my previous review

Pros: Works great. Easy access to three drives without having to open your computer case or remove any screws.

Cons: none at all

Other Thoughts: In my prior review, I questioned whether this enclosure is truly hot-swap. After much additional research, I have learned that the Adaptec 1430SA HostRAID is NOT hot-swap capable, thus it was the cause of the problems I experienced. I replaced it with an Adaptec 3405 SAS RAID controller and hot-swap works perfectly. The 1430 is several levels below 'entry level' and the only safe way to swap drives with it is with the system powered off.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid but tight fit

Pros: - Easy access
- Simple installation
- Highly compatible
- Consistent data transfer
- Fit three drives without issue in 2 bay space
- Solid construction

Cons: - Tight fit

This device has a tight fit in some older cases.

Other Thoughts: I have a domain/file server that we built in an old rolling tower case purchased from a computer store in Germany in 2000. This case was designed for server use and has lots of room to work with, however, it does not have the quick swap screwless options for drives that most cases have now. Even with the side panels being large doors, the hassles of physically installing and removing drives can be tedious. I tried over solutions, but often found I lost a space every few drive slots (10x 5.25" front access drive bays). due to tight fits of the housing.

This solution solved that, even if I had to firmly force or dremel some tabs on the built in drive mounting frames.

I am disappointed that they are discontinued with Newegg, since I now want to install two more.

3 out of 5 eggsIs this really a hot-swap cage?

Pros: Easy to install, easy front panel access, easy to slide drives in and out.

Cons: Gets quite hot. Also I wonder if this device is really "hot-swap" or not.

Other Thoughts: I built a system for a customer to replace an old legacy box. It runs Windows Server 2003, with an Adaptec 1430SA and this cage, with two drives mirrored as RAID-1. I inserted a third drive while it was running, planning to create a hotspare. The system locked up and the existing array committed suicide. I'll experiment some more when I get it loaded and running again.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Works great, easy install, toolless so the drives just slide in, has a fan for cooling your drives

Drives can be inserted/removed while PC is on. This allows me to hot-swap in whatever drive I want to use

Cons: Put a tiny piece of electrical tape over each LED indicator on the front since they are so bright.

Being toolless, the drives just slide in. If you insert a drive upside-down (or install the backplane upside-down) you will crush your backplane's SATA connector in the back.

Other Thoughts: Note that you will need to connect each drive to a separate SATA port on your motherboard. My EVGA FTW motherboard has a bad SATA port so I only have 1 spare SATA connection instead of 3.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good cage for a small home server or NAS box. The color matches my case almost perfectly. I needed the extra space and having placeholder covers on my server is a no-can-do situation. Bought this on a whim. Build construction is excellent, the removal system is well thought out, and the locks don't jiggle like I more or less had expected. Feels very high-quality.

Cons: Can't disable the HDD recognition lights. Disabling the activity lights is a plus, but it didn't go far enough. I have my server by my bed and the lights are awfully bright. But that's me nitpicking more or less for the sake of it. I'm not losing sleep over it or anything.

Other Thoughts: I have three drives in the cage set up as a RAID 1 with hot spare. Build speed of a new RAID is decent, not really noticing a loss in transfer speed to the drives in the RAID cage. The connection is for all intents and purposes transparent and does not negatively impact anything in any way.

I was hoping to be able to put a high-performance fan on it since I had a few laying about, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. The stock fan keeps the drives (Seagate 3TB Barracudas) plenty cool despite being stored in the hottest room in the house and always on.

5 out of 5 eggsSATA Hot Swap bay

Pros: Solid construction, fits great and looks great in my black case. Allowed me to install 3 more drives and still leave 2 of my 5.25 bays open for optical drives.

Cons: None
