4 out of 5 eggsStill works perfectly after 8 years

Pros: Easy, simple installation -- just like installing a SATA optical drive, but with choice of SATA or 4-pin Molex power input. If you're short on power cables (say, for fans and whatnot), you can cheat like me and use the 4-pin as a power-output/passthrough if you're using the SATA-power input (minding your wattage on the line and PSU capacity, of course). After a fan swap (put in a 40mm Panaflow) and voltage mod to run the fan at 5V several years ago, the only sound I hear from it is the hard drive's initial spin-up. (Granted, the fan doesn't always start at that low voltage. I should have set it for 7V and added a switch to let it run only when the drive's plugged in.)

An added bonus, with the drive in the slot but not plugged in, I can still close the door on my Antec P182.

Cons: The stock fan was noisy and terrible. But as mentioned in the Pros section, a fan swap with a quieter 40mm unit is easy enough. Plus, if the fan uses a 4-pin Molex passthrough power connector, you can just plug it right into the back of the rack for power, instead of having to recrimp/resolder the odd 2-pin adapter from the included fan.

Also, since it's aluminum and plastic, it doesn't necessarily slide in and out all that easily. (Though after 8 years I've never had an issue with it; the aluminum is textured such that it actually makes it a bit easier.)

May not be compatible with some drives, if the SATA connectors on the drive are in a non-standard position or recessed at all. Also, it uses four screws on the bottom to mount the drive, and has no accomodation for 2.5" drives. (I have seen brackets for 2.5", though, that may be compatible, as they place the drive connectors in the same position as on a 3.5" drive.)

Other Thoughts: As others have mentioned, there is no backplane card in the drive tray -- the rack directly interfaces with the SATA connectors on the back of the hard drive. (I consider that a plus, as that's one less piece of proprietary hardware to go bad.) And as the connector on the back is recessed slightly, a SATA cable with a straight connector on the end will fit better than an L-shaped one.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Seemed like a good piece of hardware for the price. Quick order processing & delivery.

Cons: DOA. After spending an hour chatting w/ their tech support it was determined it was afaulty unit.

Other Thoughts: Going with a different brand name next time.

3 out of 5 eggsDifferent Connector

Pros: Durable
Good Construction quality

Cons: Not the same SATA connector pictured.

Other Thoughts: The unit I received has a different SATA connector than the picture. Mine has a separate power connector, and separate data connector, so a joined connector (most external cases) won't work.

3 out of 5 eggsNot bad

Pros: Works like it's supposed to, easy to install. Nice steal case design and the fan on it is quite. The case has a very solid feel to it and is slightly heavy which is nice.

Cons: The face seems very poor quality and it feels very brittle when you remove the drive. I bought 2 of these and they both feel very sturdy but the removable part is a very cheap plastic. Also it can be hard to remove the drive I found as it's metal on metal to slide it together. Really had to pull to remove the drive.

4 out of 5 eggsWhy did I not see this sooner?

Pros: Works beautifully. It makes me feel ashamed that I've been using USB dongles to copy data onto external drives when this is SO MUCH faster.

Cons: Use a straight SATA cable. The plug is inset a little so if your cable ends at a 90 degree angle it will not seat properly

Other Thoughts: If the sled was made with a screw-less design, it would be perfect.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well but...

Pros: Works well. I like being able to swap out drives with ease.

Cons: My only complaint is that the front of the unit sticks out and I'm unable to fully close the front door of my computer case (Fractal Design R3)

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad for the price

Pros: Good fit and finish. Extruded aluminum body with plastic ends. The key lock is not necessary for operation.

Cons: The fan is awful. It started making noise within a month, even in a reasonably clean server closet.

Other Thoughts: I have used a few different varieties of drive trays, and none of them have had good fans. I am rating this product a four based on the old adage "you get what you pay for."

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Very Well

Pros: Installs easily (both rack and drawer)
Works well, Easy and effective hot swap (Intel Controller at least)

Cons: Construction is a bit weak - so treat it nicely

Other Thoughts: I have been using these units for two years and have nine of them bought over those two years. Not a single problem.

3 out of 5 eggsCompact easy hot swaping if you don't mind the noise

Pros: Compact; easy to use

Cons: Noisy fan; no backplane on the hot swap tray, drive connects directly to bay via opening in the tray.

Other Thoughts: The little fan on this thing is pretty noisy and there doesn't appear to be anyway to disable it, short of cutting the wires. Also, the drive does not get plugged into the tray it connects directly to the back of the bay when you slide the tray in. This might effect longevity and may require you to actually screw the drive into the tray to ensure proper connection. Though it is a fairly snug fit in the tray and I have been able to use it without having to screw the drive in for now.

5 out of 5 eggsIndispensible

Pros: Have these on three computers, six in all. No failures in close to a year. I like to play OS musical chairs and try out different things. These make it easy to change drives in your computer and change the OS in seconds.

Cons: The 2 position switch doesn't shut drives off, must pull drives out a bit to disconnect. Not a real con just something to get used to.

Other Thoughts: This unit is the short verison, great for most cases.
