1 out of 5 eggsBUY MB153SP-B 3 INSTEAD!

Pros: -solid construction
-3-In-2, exactly what I need for Lots of space... almost

Cons: -EXTREMELY tight fit! You WILL need to modify your case to get these to fit. I had 2 of these to install which required bending 12 of the 5.25" support tabs COMPLETELY flat in order for them to fit. On top of these being just a bit too tall, I also had one short out the top HDD bay, so I had to RMA that one.

Other Thoughts: I recently discovered MB153SP-B 3... this product is similar to the old 4-in-3 backplane I had previously. This seems to be a newer, cheaper, better version. If you read this review, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! Buy the MB153SP-B 3 instead!

2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't fit

Pros: I'm sure it's great, if I could use it.

Cons: Too tall for my full size case's drive bays.
I purchased this to use with my Antec Twelve Hunderd case. Unfortunately, it does not fit into the case. It is too tall, overall, to fit into the shelves of the 5.25 drives.

5 out of 5 eggsProduct and service.

Pros: I have 4 of these units, and can find nothing but praise for the product. I am changing drives from the storage bays to active bays constantly. The only problem I have had was caused by me, and their service department was kind enough to send me the part I needed to effect the repair. These units are real workhorses, as all their products I own.

Cons: If there are any, I haven't found them in 5 years.

Other Thoughts: If you need a durable unit, that will stand up to constant use, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this item.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, not great

Pros: Does what it says - holds 3x 3.5" drives in two 5.25" bays. Easy to mount in the case, fits perfectly. I installed it in my server with three 1TB drives configured in RAID 5 (configure with your motherboard's RAID controller).

Cons: Feels cheap, but it will probably hold up. The drive trays are annoying to work with, because you have to mount each drive to a tray before sliding them into the cage. If this would bug you I recommend a trayless design, otherwise it works fine and is perfectly functional.

3 out of 5 eggsYeah they work.... but

Pros: They work.

Cons: They don't exactly fit all chassis -- a little bit wide... just a touch. Really had to force them in which made me cringe. The plastics are waiting to snap, but if you're careful you'll be okay.

Other Thoughts: Bought in 2009 and they still work. No complaints there.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great, with caveats

Pros: 3-in-2 backplane so you can fit more drives. External, easy hot swap with activity/error indicator lights.

Just got my 2nd one for a rebuild of my home NAS storage. First one was great, and when I had a drive fail in it very easy to pull the failed drive, replace it, and put it back in all without shutting down the system.

Cons: Pretty long with the fan on the back, as well as a bit noisy, but for me that's not too bad. The bigger issue is the height is such that it actually won't fit into the 5.25" bays if you have a case with the tabs sticking out separating each half height bay. In that case, you'll have to bend, dremel, or otherwise modify your case for it to fit. If they could shave off a millimeter or two they probably could get it to work. Also a bit tight on the sides, but pretty workable.

Other Thoughts: I'm probably going to get some quieter fans and sound proofing material. Seems louder in the new case I got, but that could partially be due to the large vent on the top and side of the case which my previous one didn't have.

3 out of 5 eggsWell built but noisy

Pros: Very well built and solid. It works as advertised.

Cons: a bit on the noisy side. I was able to swap out the fan on the back as it is a standard size. There is a catch to this. the fan connector to the unit is nonstandard and requires you to connect the fan to the motherboard or get out your soldering iron. I deducted a couple of stars for all of this.
With the replacement fan it was much quieter.

Other Thoughts: I found the required tray to be cumbersome and a pain to swap out hard drives. as a result I am not using this unit at this time.

4 out of 5 eggsNot reliable for 6Gbs

Pros: Solid at 3Gbs. Very easy to swap drives. Drives stay cool.

Cons: Connected to new Intel extreme MB. Works but with excessive errors using 6Gbs port and drive. Same drive is reliable using 3Gbs port. Only minor loss of performance on benchmarks when using 3Gbs port. Also - Errors very high testing 3 Gbs drive on 6Gbs MB port.

Other Thoughts: Stick to the 3Gbs MB ports when using Intel MB.

2 out of 5 eggsBuilt well enough, doesn't fit.

Pros: Seems built well enough. Hey, it's 3 in 2!

Cons: This simply does not fit in my 5.25" bays. I had to bend a considerable amount of metal to get it in. Even now I wouldn't say it "fits" since it's wedged in rather tightly, rails don't line up, etc. On the bright side, it's "fit" is tight enough that mounting screws are a moot point.

It's also much deeper than any of my other devices. I'm lucky my DIMMs aren't taller or they would have collided with fan on the back.

3 out of 5 eggsIt...just...doesn't...quite...fit!

Pros: Nice idea, fast data transfer, hot-swappable, as far as 0's and 1's go moving to and fro it works fine...BUT...

Cons: ...it's just a leetle bit too BIG to fit into the two 5.25" slots it is supposed to fit in without A LOT of pushing-and-shoving-and-extra-effort-thinking-you're-going-to-break-something-and-that-shouldn't-be-necessary-if-they-had-just-designed-it-to-be-the-right-SIZE! Rrrowwrrr!!!

Other Thoughts: So, instead of being inside the case like it's SUPPOSED TO BE, I use it like an external drive bay and connect to the PSU molex power cable and Mobo SATA ports with a Molex & SATA slot adapter I found on Am-A-Zon-dot-com and some SATA cables & special Molex cables and adapters I found from Performance-dash-PCs-dot-com (NewEgg didn't have them).
