4 out of 5 eggsWorks reasonably well, a bit of a tight fit

Pros: Did exactly what it said it would do. I have 4x WD RED 2TB disks connected to the onboard SATA of my motherboard for a FreeNAS box and it's working very nicely. The LEDs are green, when a disk is installed and flash orange when the disk activity without any additional LED wires needed. Fan is easily removable.

Cons: The moving plastic parts all feel flimsy, the little arm that swings out to eject the disk and the purple plastic tab you push down to unhook that arm look like they'll break off anytime. The trays for the disks are just a piece of rectangular plastic. Make sure you don't lose the low-profile screw for it or you'll be unhappy.

The fan it comes with has a proprietary connector design so it can't be easily replaced. The bay is quite deep and removing the fan DEFEATS the temperature sensor... uh.. you'd think that's when you would need it the most!

Other Thoughts: This is a great little backplane/ dock for a home server, enthusiast gaming rig, or jimmy's-first-nas-box, and it gets the job done. But... it would look a little embarassing in a *real* server.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent product

Pros: Sata 3 support, quiet fan. Built-in monitoring LEDs.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Purchased this along with another Icy Dock unit for my server case (Item #: N82E16811138098). Fits like a glove. I was pleased that the fan was quiet, especially for a backplane product. This is currently connected to an Areca ARC-1210 Raid controller and so far so good.

4 out of 5 eggsworks well

Pros: Does the job it was designed to do. Not finicky like some of the trayless options. Active cooling with fault detection.

Cons: Trays generally less convenient than newer designs. Trays adequate, but minimally so. Mine did not include baffles (only useful when not fully populated). Poor documentation: no manual available online.

Other Thoughts: I was originally disappointed that the activity LEDs, though operational, appeared to be bussed, i.e. triggered as a set. Hot-swap is of little use if you can't trust that you know which drive to replace in a degraded RAID array! As it turns out, all I really needed to do was to remove a block of jumpers from the back. This probably doesn't affect current revisions: the backplane in the current product photos doesn't match mine. Still, an actual manual would have been quite helpful.

Given the alternatives, I would not buy this again today.

4 out of 5 eggsA re-review

Pros: I originally wrote a review of this Backplane over a year and a half ago, when my usage of it was very limited and more or less was for cooling/cable management and "looks". As I use it more frequently now, as it manages my Raid 1 for my OS and 2 Drives which I tend to swap out to other computers I have to come to like it more. My original rating still stands of 4 as non screwless trays can be a pain. Could of easily done push pins or something similar.

Cons: Price still. Cables can become loose quite easily. And may need to be pushed in firmly. Ideal for raid users and data heavy people, nice for editors/photographers that need to move drives around quickly and prefer it over an external USB/eSATA dock. It can get quite dusty inside. I'd recommend shutting down and pulling all the drives and compressed airing it everyone in a while. Dust off the drives as well and the trays.

Other Thoughts: I originally claimed that an LED was faulty, however it turns out that my Seagate 1TB drive is the cause of always having the LED appear orange. Once pulled the problem goes away. If I put it into another Bay the problem will re-occur. Guess i'll be sticking with WDs from now :p

3 out of 5 eggsDecent cage

Pros: I wanted to replace the CM 4-3 cages I was currently using in my Cooler Master 590 case. I decided to use the same backplace as the pre-built unRaid servers. What I liked...
* Clean design.
* Nice size fan for cooling/less noise.
* No key needed to remove drives.

Cons: As another commenter noted, I found it very difficult to install this cage. I had to use quiet a bit of force to get it in and the screws didn't really line up either.

The fan looks to be a standard 80x80mm fan, but it does not connect using a standard plug. So if the fan starts to go you either need to order a replacement part or connect the pins to prevent the fan alarm and provide power from the MB/PSU.

Most if the device is plastic and a cheap feeling. I think it's a little too expensive for what you get.

Other Thoughts: I only ordered one even though I wanted to get 3 for consistency. After the difficult time installing I don't think I will get the other two.

Keep in mind that you cannot use angle SATA cables since they will get in the way of the molex power plugs.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Choice for the money

Pros: For me, I was very happy with this product. It does everything it says it does and it doesn't break the bank. In my opinion the quality of the ICY Dock is good when comparing to other drives in its class. The latch on the front was easy to use and after over a month of use have had not one issue with it. Another plus, is that you don't need some funky key on the front of the drive to turn it on or off, or unlock it to get it out.

Cons: Only problem I had was with the molex power plug being close to the SATA connection for the drive, if you only have an L shape connector it wont work. But most drives ship with a straight connector anyway so not really an issue at all.

Other Thoughts: For the money its worth it compared to other devices. It looks nice, fits nice and overall haven't had any problems using it. Even tho this isn't really a server realated product, nor would I compare it to any server products in its class, we work in a datacenter environment so we see alot of different types of hot swap drive bays and this one is worth the price. I would and have recommended this to others.

3 out of 5 eggsA decent product

Pros: The MB454SPF-B does what it advertises - it lets you put 4 drives in 3 half-height drive bays. It's easy to set up and mostly everything just works well. The fan is notably quiet. Also, the aesthetics of the face plate are comparatively good.

Cons: Unfortunately, the "mostly" is a bit of a problem. The issues are:

1) The general build quality. It's not horrible, but neither is it something to write home about. For example, the drive "trays" (really, just two pieces of metal that screw to the drive and a front plate with a latch) are flimsy when compared to other manufacturer's products - even other manufacturers in the "cheap for home use" category.

2) The latch release doesn't provide positive feedback - you just sort of push it up hard and wait for the latch to pop.

3) Upon initial drive insertion, the side alignment flanges don't really self-align - you need to get them sort-of in the right position and then wiggle the tray up and down a bit until you catch the slot.

4) I was surprised to note that the screw holes don't align properly in the vertical direction. At first I thought it was my case, but another case had the same problem so I measured between centers and it really was the holes that were at fault.

Other Thoughts: In keeping with the product review guidelines I'm not going to compare this with another similar product that Newegg also sells (as much as I'd like to). It's just worth an extra search and I'm sure you'll be able to find the better product.

I'm probably going to purchase a few more of these MB454SPF-B(s) because, in spite of it's failings, it's the right size for my application (4 drives) and it looks a whole lot better than anything else out there after it's installed - no need to cover it up.

1 out of 5 eggsCould do better.

Pros: Allows hot swapping of drives in my RAID 5 system. Internal fans keep drives cool.

Cons: Status LED connections on unit don't match status LED connections on my RAID controller. Mounting screw holes don't line up with case. Did not honor mail-in rebate.

Other Thoughts: Bought this because the mail in rebate made this product less expensive than a competing product, but Icy Dock would not honor the rebate they advertised.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Fit into my Thermaltake Kandalf with ease just had to push it a little bit. Made my cable management much better and easier to deal with. Using it with 4 Different SATA drives, had to give my Raptor a little push to get it in but otherwise all the drives fit in fine. Not using raid on any of the drives however eventually planning to do a raid 5 with a hardware controller card and will pick up another dock to fit those drives in there as I believe for a raid where you may need to quick swap this is mandatory.

Cons: Not screwless trays and having issues where one of the activity lights is always on Orange instead of green and will go to Green when accessed. Seems like its backwards for some reason as the others are always on green and flash orange when accessed. Drop it a star for that and the price as it is fairly expensive however I do think it makes my system look better, I could of probably gone without it.

Other Thoughts: I got it to help with some cooling issues and cable management which it did improve, however I don't feel the price was totally worth it. Happy with it but felt it shouldn't be more than 50-60 bucks tops.

5 out of 5 eggsSimple.

Pros: I got this to setup in my linux server as an internal Drobo. This thing installed into my server case without any problems, it's not too long or anything. It feels extremely sturdy compared to the backplane I was going to get. I don't think I will be replacing this anytime ever.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: The screws that the harddrives attach to the rails with have a flat head. I would imagine these being a pain to find if you lost them.
