Icy Dock is a household name for its high quality storage products for RAID applications, SSDs, and functional design. Now, all of those will be combined into one ground breaking product: the MB982SPR-2S. This little device packs a huge punch with features and performance, allowing 2 x 2.5" SATA SSD/HDD to be converted to a 3.5" SATA form factor for use in most internal drive bays, backplanes, external enclosures, and server racks. It transforms the 2 drives into a 3.5" SATA drive with exact dimensions, mounting holes, and connection locations as a normal 3.5" drive.

1 out of 5 eggsA prototype that needs lots of improvements

Pros: This is a very solid, cool-looking enclosure, but nothing more

Cons: When it works, the hardware RAID change mode does NOT function at all. The doc is not so clear in the procedure of to accomplish that. The software doesn't help either.
It was not possible to use this enclosure as a port multiplier unit. This is a very important feature for us.
We think it is still a prototype. Why then to buy a converter (not cheap) if its features are not so well tested?.

Other Thoughts: We have mixed our ideas with other we saw in other websites.

2 out of 5 eggsBad rebate terms

Pros: Works ok

Cons: Need to read the fine print on the rebate. Must be postmarked within 20 days of purchase. Purchased on a weekend and took 10 days to arrive. Unfortunately I was out of town that week and now the rebate is invalid

Other Thoughts: Won't buy another Icy dock product.

5 out of 5 eggsdefinately has a place

Pros: 2 in 1
raid 1/0
adds the ability to do raid 10(01 actually) in places that only support 2x 3.5 HDDs

Cons: raid 0 has no speed benefit
use software to make raid

Other Thoughts: So i have installed about 10 of these and they work great. if you can look past the speed issue with raid 0, these are great. i use these with 750xt to get the response time i need to make up for the raid 0 not increasing speed. if you are in a situation where you are limited to 3.5 and the amount of 3.5 drives you can use . definitely take a look at these.
my hope is that if they sell enough they will be motivated to make another version that address that speed increase for raid 0

4 out of 5 eggsgreat if you know what to expect

Pros: 2 in 1, if your solution requires efficient use of space and use with hot swap back plane this is perfect.

Cons: as others mentioned the raid 0 doesnt really perform the way you would expect, but honestly look at how much space they had to work with. using the back dial to set the raid is hit or miss, so to be on the safe side do both set the hardware raid to what you need and use another computer with the software to make sure its set correctly. and their hasnt been a firmware update in a while.

Other Thoughts: the way i look at the the raid 0 issue is like this;
for ssd use, since data is striped it will improve the life and endurance of the ssd since its only dealing with half the data,
for HDD / use hybrids it gives you more space and double the slc cache
for raid 1 ; meeh, at least you get redundancy if you only have 1 slot
My preference is just use raid 0 and treat it like a single drive and raid1 with another icy dock (4x hdds) to get a raid 10 effect

5 out of 5 eggswork great

Pros: 2 in one 3.5 host swap

Cons: raid 0 not the greatest but at least its HW raid

Other Thoughts: dont do reviews usually but use this appropriately, just be cause its supports raid 0 doesnt mean it will make ssd that mauch faster, keep your expecation in line. they had limites space to put a raid controller so its not going to be the greatest.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Fully Matured

Pros: Solidly engineered from a mechanical standpoint.
Dimensionally exacting for easy installations.
The little things like electrical insulation on support plates is a nice touch.

Cons: No true Raid0 speed benefit.
Reset button configuration method doesn't work.
There has been no firmware update on this rig since early 2011.

Other Thoughts: I can concur that this dock doesn't support FULL Raid0. Tried a few different drive combos and it always tests at Raid1 speeds even when you stripe. This is a big boo-boo but more than likely a implementation issue between Marvel and Icy. Hopefully a future firmware update will rectify this bug. Testing throughput and comparing Raid0 to Raid1 yields the same results. What's the point of having a Raid0 stripe option if it doesn't work?

Beyond that glaring issue, this dock is well engineered and thought out. Internal connector alignment is a no brainer, the addition of insulation layers on the internal plate metal surfaces to the form factor foot-print this dock has mostly everything going for it.

When I struggled to get the reset configuration process to work, the online chat support was quick to connect and the cs agent immediately directed me to using the software configuration method. That worked. Too many detailed questions and they will defer to the installation video.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks As Advertised

Pros: RAID1 capability in a single 3.5 inch slot that only uses one SATA connection on the motherboard. Setup was painless and troublefree. Using as RAID1 on OS drives for WHS2011. Anyone with a modicum of knowledge in setting up a PC should have no problems.

Cons: As others have stated, would be nice if the status LEDS were on the front rather the rear. Also would like to have option for black rather than silver. Not a big enough issue to drop an egg.

Other Thoughts: This is not a flimsy plastic that feels cheap. It is constructed of metal and is well engineered. I have no hesitation in either recommending or purchasing additional units!

3 out of 5 eggsGreat design performance lacking

Pros: Well made great tool less design aluminum construction.

Cons: No speed increase in RAID 0

Other Thoughts: After trying the reset on/off instruction didn't work I just switch to the number 4 on the dial put dock in my mac and it recognized it as a single larger drive tried their software and confirmed that the drive was RAID 0. Speed tests show that the RAID 0 is the same speed as one of the single drives from the RAID very disappointing.

4 out of 5 eggsTruely an excellent technology

Pros: Built in RAID, use either hardward or download RAID managment software; extreemly simple yet powerful.

Easy enough for a beginner yet very powerful notification options.

The all metal case fits nicely into a normal slot, and the hinged press to release top acts as a lever and loads the SSD drives firmly into the receiver.

Lights in the "press to release" button provide status of the drives at a glance.

Cons: Lights in the enclosure are located on the same end as the SATA and power connectors; they should have been located on the other end so one does not have to open the case to see the status of lights.

This is overcome by the software but hardware solutions are always far better for lomg term mantenance and future OS updates.

No option to extend the status light outside the system case.

4 out of 5 eggsNot SATA 6gb/s as box shows

Pros: Its great so your motherboard (CPU) doesn't have to do the RAID processing. I like to keep raid solutions simple and off board anyway.

Cons: It says 6gb/s on the box, but its not. It is 3gb/s.
