Introducing the new face of Icy Dock screw-less technology, the MB974SP-B 4-in-3 SATA Backplane. This product allows you to install 4 x 3.5” SATA hard drives into a computer case’s 3 available 5.25” device bays. Using Icy Dock's world renowned screw-less technology, no screws or tools are required to insert or eject the drives making hot swapping a completely hassle free experience.

The front of the device includes childproof power buttons for each drive which require the button to be pressed slightly deeper than normal to ensure that a drive is not accidentally turned off by bumping into it or rubbing against it. These power buttons also act as an LED indicator showing drive power and activity. Similarly, each drive door has a multi-locking latch mechanism to prevent a door from being opened easily, making it an ideal solution for systems where IT and non-IT personnel have access. Also on the front are USB and eSATA ports to quickly and easily connect external storage peripherals, especially useful for cases that do not have front/top port access.

On the rear of the MB974SP-B is a monster 80mm cooling fan to pull cool air from the front ventilation slots, over the drives, and exhaust the warm air out through the rear ventilation slots. The fan also features an “on-demand” power system, so that the fan is only powered on if a drive’s power is on. So even if all 4 slots are filled, the fan will only spin if one of the drives is powered on. And if the included fan is not enough, it can be upgraded to use most aftermarket 80mm case fans that use a 2 or 3 pin connector, giving you a wide range of choices according to your preferences. To further your customization, a 3 speed fan control is built in letting you choose between high, low, or auto. The auto setting uses the Smart Cooling Technology to adjust fan speed according to the cooling requirements of the drives. An internal SATA cable and USB header connector are also built into the rear for easy connection to the systems motherboard or add-on card.

  • newegg Fits 4 x 3.5” Drive into 3 x 5.25” Device Bays The ICY DOCK MB974SP-B internal raid backplane can hold up to 4 x 3.5” SATA HDDs, and fit into three 5.25” device bays. The tray-less, screw-less and tool-less design makes interchangeability and maintenance a genuine hassle-free experience.

2 out of 5 eggsQuestionable function

Pros: Great way to make use of an older computer with fewer drive bays. I like the individual power buttons. Looks really well built from the outside, and the swappable fan option is a nice feature.

Cons: Can't tell when the drive has successfully locked in place. Locking mechanism feels flimsy. Cables for USB and SATA are too short and just get in the way of connecting drive cables.

Other Thoughts: I just finished installing this to replace my Rosewill trayless adapters because I thought it would be better. It is worse. It costs 7x what the cheap Rosewill adapters cost and although this fits more drives, I would spend about half to use Rosewill and get better quality.

I had set it all up and powered up my server, only 2 of the drives showed up. Powered down, checked all connections inside, checked the RAID card, tried again and no change. I then started removing and reinserting drives.....some would randomly work, and some would stop. I figured that they weren't seating correctly so I went and pushed each one in manually and then locked the door, and I finally got 3 drives to show up and one drive to come back. I played whack-a-mole with the top drive until it was finally recognized. Either the contacts are recessed way too far into the SATA on the backplane, or this things has some other massive flaw.

I haven't tried to access data, but it all appears to be there. I hope the drives remain functional. If they start dropping out like I fear, this will be a 1 star product. This is specifically for storage systems and it's the one thing I can't count on it to do, that a cheap in house brand does better and cheaper.

5 out of 5 eggsSATAIII - 6Gb/s Compatible

Pros: Just a followup to my earlier review and another users post: there is some conflicting information concerning SATAIII - 6Gb/s support; Icy Dock's documentation states that this fully supports SATA III. I purchased three of these in late 2011, and all three bays have been running SATA III drives at full 6Gb/s speed since that time through today with no issue.

Cons: see previous review

3 out of 5 eggsOK, but power connection fragile

Pros: Lets you hot-swap 4 SATA drives, in just 3 5.25 bays, which is pretty much what every old workstation case has.

Cons: The power connectors for the whole chassis are a pair of sata power connectors. Most cases don't have a lot of room behind those drive bays, with cables coming out of the power supply there. While installing mine I broke one of the power connectors. It seems to be working fine on one but I'm not thrilled with it. And the latches are kinda flimsy, though they work ok if you're delicate and careful with them.

Other Thoughts: If I buy another I'll get one with the old-fashioned 4-pin molex power connectors on it, I think they'll be more durable. And a different latch design. It works fine, really, but I wouldn't buy another like it.

2 out of 5 eggsSmooth swapping, bad pcb

Pros: This bay has a great tool-less mechanism. I have only seen this good on high end rack mount servers.

Cons: This unit came with a bad pcb. As soon as either of the sata power jacks were plugged in, it shorted the PSU and would not power up. Im leary on ordering another Icydock.

Other Thoughts: I would stick with a version without the extra fancy features like esata and usb. Just make a good hot-swap bay and make that part great.

4 out of 5 eggsA CLARIFICATION!.......

Pros: Everything is good except:......

Cons: FACT directly from ICYDOCK:

This is NOT... N O T compatible with SATA III drives. IT doesn't matter who the drive manufacturer is.

It WILL handle up to 3 TB drives, but only SATA II.

Manufacturer is upgrading the electronics in the 1st quarter of 2012

4 out of 5 eggsBest SATA cage so far, though a few issues

Pros: Purchased three of these units for a full tower case. Has -almost- every feature I've looked for in a SATA cage. Removable fan, fan controller, nice detail to offering fan cable wire management, tray-less design, individual latching power buttons per drive. Pretty sturdy construction; the doors do feel a tad flimsy, but they don't feel like they will break any time soon. The eSATA and USB ports are a nice extra.

Cons: The cage offers a 2pin and a 3pin fan header. Strangely, the red 12+VDC and the yellow RPM feedback connections on the 3pin header are swapped from industry standard. Not sure how a small detail like this could have been missed. If you're adding an aftermarket fan, you'll have to swap the wires.

The OCZ Vertex 3 SSD does not work with this cage. It's detected, but windows throws I/O errors and won't boot. Every other drive tried works fine with no issue. Suspect this is more an issue with this SSD, as this drive has known timing issues.

The stock fan is pretty loud at full speed; don't have a meter, but I'd say probably 35+ dBA.

Heat; while the back fan pulls air across the drives, it is not as efficient as having a fan blow air over the drives. The temps of my eight drives went up 9 degF, though this is a bit to be expected with the lower RPM fan that I went with.

eSATA and USB are soldered directly to board, and are too short for large cases. Removable would have been ide

Other Thoughts: All-in-all this cage has been a pleasure to work with; I'd searched for a year or two for one like it and finally found this one that had almost every feature I'd looked for. It is unfortunately more expensive than most other cages, especially when you need three of them, but was worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsWell Engineered and Feature-Rich! I Love It!

Pros: Works Perfectly.
Requires only 2 SATA power connectors to power 4 drives. Fits 4 drives into 3 5.25 inch bay.
Latches open and close easily (unlike my Kingwin bays, which I have to practically bend the plastic door to close)
Solid, high quality construction.
Swapping out drives is a breeze. I just safely-remove them in Windows and the LED turns off and I can pop them out and put new ones in.
Power buttons for individual drives so you can leave only the drives you need running and save energy/drive life span.
Supports SATA 1,2,3 drives.
Fits into my Antec 900 case with no issues
Nice LEDS (not any brighter than the other LEDS on my Antec 900.)
Fan speed switch on front (high/low/auto) fan is not too loud (much quiter than competing products)

Cons: Sata cable is soldered on to the device.
Not all of the screw holes are lined up correctly to go into my Antec 900 case.

Other Thoughts: If you are like me and want to be able to insert and remove multiple SATA drives without shutting down and taking your computer apart every time, then you need this. This thing is sweet. I don't need to leave all of the drives on all of the time just because I need to leave my computer running. It saves power and the life of the drives.
This is a well-engineered, solid product and the top of it's class.
The power buttons require that you push them in with something long and pointy like a finger nail. This is to prevent accidentally powering a drive off. This is a feature and not a flaw.

5 out of 5 eggsReal Nice

Pros: Replaceable fan is nice touch (I can see that going first). Unit as a whole feels solid, drives slide in like a latex glove (kinda sticks but not in a bad way). Power buttons are nice so no accidental "failures" on the RAID. Fan moves air to keep drives cool enough, I just leave it on Auto and I cant hear it over the other noises in the room. USB in front is handy and useful. TRAYLESS!!

Cons: Cant remove eSata cable (I have no need for it) soldered to the board.

Other Thoughts: Blue LEDS are bright, but are fun to watch with a RAID 5 being accessed :) "stuffed" into an Antec 900, needed to add more drives and 3 more wasnt going to cut it, saw this and thought BINGO! No messing with trays, truly no need to shutdown system to get to drives. If you're thinking of getting it. Get it!

5 out of 5 eggsWould buy again

Pros: 1. It has a replaceable fan! If it starts to get loud, or dies I can replace it instead of buying a whole new backplane. Brilliant! (some others make you buy a new backplane)
2. It doesnt have "open" engraved into the front like other backplanes. If you need instructions on how to open the hotswap bay you shouldnt be setting up an array. (There is a sticker, but that is easy to remove)
3. External Sata and Usb ports.
4. High/Low/Auto switch for the fan.
5. Only requires 2 sata power connections.
6. Good thing it was made from quality materials because I had to... persuade it into my comp.
7. Fan turns off automatically when HDDs are powered down.

Cons: The sata cables that come with it smell horriable. The room smelled like a hospital untill I replaced the One sata cable I used.

Other Thoughts: I could start my own rave club with the status lights.

4 out of 5 eggsSucks Revised

Pros: This is an update to my previous review: The cage now works well, the problem was it did not like the SATA II cables I was using on my SATA I drives. It is very convenient for swapping out drives or booting to other OS. The power on and off buttons are great for when you only want to access certain drives when your system is powered on.

Cons: The power on/off buttons are too small.
