Rating: 5/5Worked so much better than I thought it would.
This review is from: ICY DOCK ToughArmor MB994SP-4SB-1 Full Metal 4 x 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s SSD/HDD Hot Swap Mobile Rack Backplane Cage Module for 5.25" Bay (Fits 7, 9.5, 12.5, 15mm height drive
Pros: * Its all METAL! * It has four 2.5" removable slots. * Its a SATA pass through design. * The two fans can be turned off, which is good since SSD really don't need cooling like a spindle HD requires. * One standard, four pin power plug! * The power and activity lights are perfect and unobtrusive. Admittedly, the activity light is dimmer than the power light, but both are usable for their intended purpose. * It actually fits just fine in the 5.25" slot. * The supplied screws worked fine in my old Lian-Li PC-60A II case. Not one installation issue.
Cons: * None that I can think of.
OK, maybe a bit pricey since there's a rebate on them, so why not just lower the price? Nope, ain't biting as a rebate's gotta be LARGE for me to submit my personal information.
Other Thoughts: I was looking for a SDD swap out mechanism as I wanted to run Win 7 Pro and Linux on two separate 256GB SSD, in this case Crucial MX200 256GB SSD's. Installing each into their respective trays was fine and without any problems. The supplied screws were fine.
The extraction lever works like a champ, working like large storage arrays. Just keep in mind that they will hang a bit on extraction if you pulled the tray out without regards to how you are pulling the tray out. Hard to explain, but if you got experience with large storage arrays, you'll know what I'm referring to. Essentially, don't let the lever go all the way to the stops.
OK, why a four slot for just two SSD's? There is a two slot setup... Price out additional trays for the two slot unit and the marginal cost for this unit becomes insignificant. So, basically I bought a two slot unit with two spare trays and I get to install the unit in an unused 5.25" bay. And if I need to, I can switch on the fans.
This really is a sweet setup... I just bought another one for another SSD/RAID build using 4 SSD's.

Pros: Solid mechanical parts. I had no issues with the screws or the left side interfering with the right.
Cons: after about a month the fans started to make some noise, initially I thought it was some case fans but I finally got down to business and figured out it was the 40mm fans, I intend on replacing them with some noctua fans and I'll update once I do. I understand that 40mm is hard to regime to design for, but the extra cost is probably worth it to the folks that would buy this. Seems like an accounting/product management oversight.
Other Thoughts: Overall solid piece of equipment, would buy again, but would probably buy a set of fans at the same time.

Pros: Good case design, easy to hot-swap disk for RAID use.
Cons: Poor PCB design, running fans makes a lot of electrical noise affecting disk speed.
Other Thoughts: If you plan to use this case for SSD, with fans off - it's good enclosure. BUT if you plan to keep fans on - beware of noise (not sound - electrical noise). With fans turned on - they produce a lot of electrical noise that reduces drice SATA speed sometimes ten times! With fans turned off I have solid 100mb/s on my WD3200BEKT, but if I turn fans on - the speed reduces incredible - I have 10mb/s write and 40mb/s read speed!
Incredible, they didn't put even cheap capacitor to reduce power noise from fans! I'll never buy ICY Dock again.

Pros: This thing is very sturdy and just feels like a high quality product should. I bought it mainly because I have an older Thermaltake case and getting SSDs in it has been a bit of a pain with various attempts at other products. This also allows you you use just one molex connector for four drives which in my case reduced some clutter. Also on another plus side, this worked with the quick release for my 5.25 drive bay so no issue there for me.
Cons: The only con is on me, I wanted this thing for quite awhile and I should've bought it much much sooner.
Other Thoughts: Its definitely overkill for me, I don't need to hotswap anything. What I do like is the fact it runs up to 4 drives off one power connector, locates my drives up and out to the way of my front intake fan, and has two fans to keep the drives cool, though they probably dont really need it.

Pros: + Only 4x1 enclosure I've seen for >9mm z-height *and* 12V drives (e.g. enterprise type, VelociRaptor, Constellation) + Great trays, very easy to swap + Fan is switched & only mildly audible when used + Single power connector (old school Molex type thankfully) + Individual set of green lights per tray + Looks good & construction is solid
Cons: + A bit too solid since it's heavier (and more difficult to install/uninstall) than necessary + Bad swap design: can't remove left side if right side is open + Trays screws are tiny, extremely short fastened against the underside of the drive -- hard to replace if/when lost + "Activity" LEDs impossible to distinguish from "power" LEDs + Also probably too bright for a home server though not blinding
Other Thoughts: After endless research I bought this because it both handled both 15mm drives and didn't have blue lights. Pretty happy with it except can't understand why the "SAS-compatible" model is $30+ more for basically a different port arrangement & no different components...

Pros: All metal construction. Very solid! Discrete LED power/activity lights. Dual fans with on/off switch. Very nice looking design.
Cons: The LED lights are a bit too discrete. I would have liked for separate power and activity LEDs. When a tray has a drive in it, it will light solid green. When there's activity, it uses the same conduit to transmit (from the back of the unit) an amber LED intermittent light. However, you can hardly tell when it flashes. No reason to knock an egg off though.
Other Thoughts: I really like this drive tray. I've got two Samsung 840 Pro (256 GB) and two OCZ Vertex 3 (120 GB) in it.

Rating: 4/5great item once you get some screws that fit
This review is from: ICY DOCK ToughArmor MB994SP-4SB-1 Full Metal 4 x 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s SSD/HDD Hot Swap Mobile Rack Backplane Cage Module for 5.25" Bay (Fits 7, 9.5, 12.5, 15mm height drive
Pros: Mild green lights - far better than oppressive blue lights Quality full metal cage Holds 15mm height HDD's Fan has a switch to turn on/off if you use SSD's
Cons: Screw length. Ridiculously small - to the point of uselessness.
Other Thoughts: Fortunately, I had a vast supply of screws lying around and was able to replace the ones that came with the unit - and actually be able to secure it to my case. What is odd is I own two other different Icy Dock units that use the same sleds that come with different screws to secure the bay device. Those secure the bay device and don't interfere with the sleds.

Pros: I was immediately impressed with the solid construction of this unit. The drive cage and sleds are solid metal and don't feel cheap.
It easily mounted in a 5.25" bay, but I couldn't use the tool-less mounting rails from my computer case because they interfered with the drive sleds. The unit does come with shallow screws that allow the cage to be securely mounted without affecting operation of the drive sleds.
I put 9.5mm thick laptop drives in the sleds, and there's plenty of room for thicker drives. The sleds fit nicely and latch securely in place. The sleds don't lock, but my house isn't exactly a high security environment.
This is a nice solution to get some extra storage in a case with limited drive bays.
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: I have pretty large exhaust fan on my PC case, so I turned off the fan on the drive cage. The faces of the drive sleds are perforated, and I can feel pretty good airflow at the front of the drive sleds.
This review is from: ICY DOCK ToughArmor MB994SP-4SB-1 Full Metal 4 x 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s SSD/HDD Hot Swap Mobile Rack Backplane Cage Module for 5.25" Bay (Fits 7, 9.5, 12.5, 15mm height drive
Pros: Cheap. When it works, it works very well, easy to swap trays/nodes
Cons: Seemingly Design Flaws that lead to Major Frustrations
Other Thoughts: SSD's must be secured if your swapping somewhat frequently, or even infrequently to avoid damaging them. When mounting the tray to drive bay, mounting brace screws locked trays in (never had this happen before) due to the poor design of the trays (they placed the mounting holes properly, but did a flaw in the trays causes even the slightest (about .5mm) excess in length of the mounting screw to lock the trays in. This resulted in me using only the rear mounting screw's, the frustration was just the inconviennce and problems it caused when a tray needed to be moved and disassembling everything.
Another interesting thing is that some of our SSD's did not work! All our SSD's are of the same brand/model with nearly identical formatting/partitioning, and about 20% of them would not work in these trays! We had to use 3.5'' - 2.5'' brackets, costing us both space and time. I have no idea why this was the case, we swapped those SSD's to other tray locations and they would not work, they were properly mounted like all the other's we triple checked...
Basically, if your using $500 SSD's do not buy this device, I cringed mounting them in. The metal is flimsy and cheap, it is rebranded OEM manufactured from likely a CAM type factory in Asia that is new to server-grade products and can't follow the blueprints that icy provided them.
Overall I would recommend spending extra to get a "slightly" higher quality tray, to me the amount of lost time and hassle not to mention the scraping (if you slide it in as they recommend in the manual, I recommend opening it up to properly insert it, sliding it in will have the metal rub against the interface ports and may damage them).
If the drives are not properly secured within the trays, even off slightly, you may misalign the interface ports and if you were like me, and its your first time with these trays, then you will think its just a little stubborn and give it a push (this was before I realized that a tiny indentation caused by a screw was causing so much friction), then you will bend the rear interfaces, I do not blame them for that, I should have assumed that it would slide in as easily as previous trays, but as it was my first tray, I did not, that SSD ended up working fine in another slot, but that slot no longer worked. However I had 3 more tray's on three different server's so I learned quickly.
I would not recommend this to a colleague, perhaps it is suitable for a workstation and/or a server that has administrator's who have low hourly rates as buying these in bulk will likely cost more then you saved purchasing them.
Just my thoughts, I know a-lot of you had good experiences, and well, dealing with the purchasing of mass amounts of hardware I have experience with foreign (primarily CHN since their big shift in trade integrity governance two years ago from national to regional) companies and I would not be surprised to see that many of these reviews are in fact manufactured, if they are I a
