External docking stations are popular because of its flexibility and compatibility. However, because it is for external use, the interface limits the transfer speed of your hard drive while only allowing one to be use at a time. In a standard computer case, there are several 5.25" bays usually reserved for your DVD ROM drive, however, will not naturally fit with your 2.5" or 3.5" hard drives without some assistance. We also want to create a much faster and smoother transition from external to internal setups. Using the MB971SP-B DuoSwap, you will save precious desktop space by integrating both 3.5" & 2.5" slots into a single 5.25" bay. This gives you the ability to expand and easily go from your external docking station to your computer in just seconds.

2 out of 5 eggsFaulty After Only 3 Months.

Pros: It worked right out of the box, just the way it should have. When I had both the 2.5" and 3.5" plugged in, I was able to access both of them. has actual push buttons for the ejecting of the Drives (I really like that feature). Also has individual power on buttons for each Drive size (another really cool feature).

Cons: Failed after 3 months of use, that's the only con I have with this, and that is the reason for only the 3 stars. If it would still be working I would have given 5.

Other Thoughts: Dropped down to 2 egg rating, trying to get a replacement is a lot harder then it should be and I don't know if it will even be worth it come end of the day. My hourly rate I charge people is $80/hr, I spent more time then I should have trying to get this replaced, I am very disappointed in their customer support.

I have bought a few Icy Dock products in the past and have been pleased with them every time.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Tested over 30 Hard Drives using this device, works great no issues at all.

Cons: When first installed I was concerned it was DOA since it wouldn't detect any drive I inserted, after restarting my PC a few times it worked out just fine. Also the mechanism that pushes the drives out is made of plastic, I don't see that lasting very long.

Other Thoughts: Excellent option for those who are in the Business of IT. I will probably buy more eventually depending on how long this one lasts.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Unit, Needs Small Adjustments to Work Perfect

Pros: Simple easy of use, metal design, very simple to install, and understand. Independent power AND eject for each drive. Run 2 drives at once.

Cons: Plastic bump eject levers, tension on side internal spring tabs too high, HDD to metal contact when using. Eats up 2 SATA ports.

Other Thoughts: The levers to pop the drive are plastic, plastic on plastic. The cage is metal and nice, but why plastic for the function component I will never understand.

You slide your drives in on a metal guide rail, I've had it catch a few times so I added a tiny bit of grease on the metal to easy operation and eject. It is nice each has a guide so you can use both at once and they seat evenly.

I had to bend/push in the side tabs inside the cage that help anti-vibration. They held the drive so tight I could not eject it properly. You need to modify this or you will put too much stress on your lever and destroy the eject. After I did this I fixed the issue a lot of other reviews mentioned. The eject worked 100% better.

2 sata ports eaten up is a tad much, Id prefer a toggle between one or a USB header instead option instead.

Overall a good value, prefer metal lever with rubber bumper next time, I would pay $20 more for a solid design easy. This was the best unit I could find to add hotswap to my tower for both types of drives and only eat up one 5.25 bay. Win for this price.

5 out of 5 eggsLove This Item!

Pros: Great for techs that work with data retrieval
Works simple like a VHS player; given that you have hot-swap enabled

Cons: Eject buttons require a little bit of force; but understandable (not removing an egg)

Other Thoughts: Love this product, makes working with customer drives a breeze. From retrieving data to diagnosing issues with the drive itself.
NOTE: Unless you want to restart your system every time you use this, enable hot-swap however you need to on your system. My option is in my BIOS.

5 out of 5 eggsCorrection to Earlier Review

Pros: Works well

Cons: None serious

Other Thoughts: This is an update to my earlier review (it seems there is no way to edit). Having got to know my motherboard a little better, it turns out that the sata port must be set to external sata to detect the hot swap. With this done, it detects the drives no problem. Thumbs up.

4 out of 5 eggsGoodt removable drive bays...

Pros: Supports all current SATA transfer rates, dependent on SATA ports on the motherboard. For my SATA III SSD, there was no change in the transfer speed. Easy to install and connect to the motherboard.

Cons: The ejection of the drives could be easier, the2.5" drives sometimes just fly out from the bay while other times it requires couple of ejects.
The hot-swap works with the 2.5", but not with 3.5" drive, despite enabling the hot swap in the BIOS or rather in the EUFI for the two ports.

Other Thoughts: For all of the functions/features with a relatively low cost, it's a pretty good deal.
The drive caddy will need two SATA ports for maintaining the SATA transfer rates on each drives, and one SATA power connector.
The ejection mechanism should be worked on by Icy Dock, but that's not the reason for deduction one egg. It's the hot-swap not working for the 3.5" HDD...

5 out of 5 eggsGood little hot swap bay.

Pros: 3.5" and/or 2.5" in one bay.
Individual power on/off buttons for the 2 drive bays.
Full SATA 3 speeds.
The ejection mechanisms feel very solid.
3 year warranty.
Silent/no rattling, other than the drive itself.
Uses SATA power natively. Death to Molex!

Cons: Connectors are on the opposite side from usual--not a huge deal, but does play havoc with cable management a little.

Other Thoughts: Have only been using it for a short time, so we'll see how it holds up under long term use. 3 year warranty for such a simple device is rather reassuring.

5 out of 5 eggsLove IcyDock

Pros: Not a bad thing to say at all. I love this item it works very well. It seems very solid.

Cons: Nothing bad to say at all, it does what it is supposed to do.

Other Thoughts: Instructions could be a little more clear about activating the AHCI in the BIOS.

5 out of 5 eggsIcy Dock DuoSwap 3.5/2.5

Pros: I have two installed. The top one holds my 3.5 media drive and the lower one holds my OS SSD. The second one holds my two backup HDD/SSD. I have no internal SSD/HDD installed. I can power up what ever drive I want on or off. When video editing I pull out my backup HDD for my media drive and insert my render HDD. I have complet control over what I need to use. I am ready to order my third to have on hand just in case on goes bad and Icy Dock quites making them.

Cons: I found out that the 7mm SSD's will not eject for what ever reason. So that would cover Samsungs SSD and notebook size SSD's. But does eject SSD's from Crucial. For my use that doesn't present a problem because my OS SSD never comes out of the dock.

Other Thoughts: Over all I like this idea. Now I don't have to worry about power use and heat when only one drive is running. Although I have had all 4 bays going at once and no problems with heat. My 750 PSU has no problems with being under powered.
