External docking stations are popular because of its flexibility and compatibility. However, because it is for external use, the interface limits the transfer speed of your hard drive while only allowing one to be use at a time. In a standard computer case, there are several 5.25" bays usually reserved for your DVD ROM drive, however, will not naturally fit with your 2.5" or 3.5" hard drives without some assistance. We also want to create a much faster and smoother transition from external to internal setups. Using the MB971SP-B DuoSwap, you will save precious desktop space by integrating both 3.5" & 2.5" slots into a single 5.25" bay. This gives you the ability to expand and easily go from your external docking station to your computer in just seconds.

3 out of 5 eggsFaulty After Only 3 Months.

Pros: It worked right out of the box, just the way it should have. When I had both the 2.5" and 3.5" plugged in, I was able to access both of them. has actual push buttons for the ejecting of the Drives (I really like that feature). Also has individual power on buttons for each Drive size (another really cool feature).

Cons: Failed after 3 months of use, that's the only con I have with this, and that is the reason for only the 3 stars. If it would still be working I would have given 5.

Other Thoughts: I have bought a few Icy Dock products in the past and have been pleased with them every time.

5 out of 5 eggsCorrection to Earlier Review

Pros: Works well

Cons: None serious

Other Thoughts: This is an update to my earlier review (it seems there is no way to edit). Having got to know my motherboard a little better, it turns out that the sata port must be set to external sata to detect the hot swap. With this done, it detects the drives no problem. Thumbs up.

4 out of 5 eggsGoodt removable drive bays...

Pros: Supports all current SATA transfer rates, dependent on SATA ports on the motherboard. For my SATA III SSD, there was no change in the transfer speed. Easy to install and connect to the motherboard.

Cons: The ejection of the drives could be easier, the2.5" drives sometimes just fly out from the bay while other times it requires couple of ejects.
The hot-swap works with the 2.5", but not with 3.5" drive, despite enabling the hot swap in the BIOS or rather in the EUFI for the two ports.

Other Thoughts: For all of the functions/features with a relatively low cost, it's a pretty good deal.
The drive caddy will need two SATA ports for maintaining the SATA transfer rates on each drives, and one SATA power connector.
The ejection mechanism should be worked on by Icy Dock, but that's not the reason for deduction one egg. It's the hot-swap not working for the 3.5" HDD...

5 out of 5 eggsGood little hot swap bay.

Pros: 3.5" and/or 2.5" in one bay.
Individual power on/off buttons for the 2 drive bays.
Full SATA 3 speeds.
The ejection mechanisms feel very solid.
3 year warranty.
Silent/no rattling, other than the drive itself.
Uses SATA power natively. Death to Molex!

Cons: Connectors are on the opposite side from usual--not a huge deal, but does play havoc with cable management a little.

Other Thoughts: Have only been using it for a short time, so we'll see how it holds up under long term use. 3 year warranty for such a simple device is rather reassuring.

5 out of 5 eggsLove IcyDock

Pros: Not a bad thing to say at all. I love this item it works very well. It seems very solid.

Cons: Nothing bad to say at all, it does what it is supposed to do.

Other Thoughts: Instructions could be a little more clear about activating the AHCI in the BIOS.

5 out of 5 eggsIcy Dock DuoSwap 3.5/2.5

Pros: I have two installed. The top one holds my 3.5 media drive and the lower one holds my OS SSD. The second one holds my two backup HDD/SSD. I have no internal SSD/HDD installed. I can power up what ever drive I want on or off. When video editing I pull out my backup HDD for my media drive and insert my render HDD. I have complet control over what I need to use. I am ready to order my third to have on hand just in case on goes bad and Icy Dock quites making them.

Cons: I found out that the 7mm SSD's will not eject for what ever reason. So that would cover Samsungs SSD and notebook size SSD's. But does eject SSD's from Crucial. For my use that doesn't present a problem because my OS SSD never comes out of the dock.

Other Thoughts: Over all I like this idea. Now I don't have to worry about power use and heat when only one drive is running. Although I have had all 4 bays going at once and no problems with heat. My 750 PSU has no problems with being under powered.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks well - but design/build flaws.

Pros: Power switches for each drive, color changing led to indicate disk activity, solid frame. The speed of the drives not affected because it is a direct SATA connection (much faster than a USB drive).

Cons: The nut to the screw supporting the right side of the 2.5" drive mount bracket not attached; after the 2nd or 3rd mount I could not mount a 2.5" drive - had to take it out and dis-assemble the whole thing to fix it. Also - will not eject a slim 2.5" drive, you can still get your fingers on top of the drive to pull it out. Works fine on normal height 2.5" drives. The plastic flap is rather easy to unhinge - you have to be very careful and gentle or you will pop it off - happened to me but I was able to re-attach.

Other Thoughts: The frame is super solid, the connections are easy and long enough, once you get used to its idiosyncrasies it does exactly what it is supposed to. They should put thread lock on the nuts holding the drive mounts, and some metal for the door flap mount.

5 out of 5 eggsIcy Dock MB971sp-b

Pros: Great for having more then one SSD or HDD.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I have two of these installed in my computer. What I like is I can have my OS SSD powered on and my other SSD or HDD's power off. I have my system set up for hot swap in BIOS. So if I need to power on a drive I just do. I am set up for video editing and I don't need my media HDD on all of the time. I also have the second SSD my backup drive off until I need it. They also work will with SATA 6 transfer rates. For me a must have and a good price.

1 out of 5 eggsLooks nice

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: Purchased in April and it died in Sept. Unit ejects poorly and hangs continuously. Internal connector for 2.5" is secured without lockwashers and comes loose from it's mounting, which is moot now because neither drive is recognized.

Other Thoughts: Too bad .... I could really use this.

2 out of 5 eggsICY DOCK MB971SP-B Hot-Swap Drive Cady for 2.5" & 3.5"

Pros: - Easy Install
- Allows Fast Change-out of 2.5" and 3.5" Drives without removing covers.

Cons: - 2.5" Bay Drive Eject Button Does Not Work for SSD's.
- Flakey SATA Connections to Drive on 25% of Units.
- Drive Bay Covers do not work with Drives Installed.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased and installed 5 of these ICY DOCK drive caddy's for use in servers that I have built. I like that I can do hot swaps (kind of) on 2.5" SSD's for OS development and also quickly change out 3.5" HDD's for off-site system backups. The convenience and ability to put two drives in one bay made the relatively high cost worth it IMO.

The problems with the drive eject bar not properly catching a 2.5" SSD which is around 7mm thick is well known. I run my OS on these SSD's and I don't change them out regularly so this has not been much of a problem for me. I know that I have to pull the exposed portion of the drive at the same time I push the eject button to get the drive to come out. A minor inconvenience.

The reason I gave the poor review was that I have had significant problems with the SATA connectors on the last two drive caddy's that I purchased. The problem mainly was with the 2.5" drive bay where the connection would be flakey on the 7 pin SATA connection that would drop the drive off-line and hence the server would crash. I was blaming this on the Samsung SSD and thought it was failing. After swapping out known good SSD's a couple times and getting the same failure, I finally disconnected the 7-pin SATA connector from the drive caddy and connected it directly to the SSD. No more problems after that. It was the drive caddy.

I had some problems with the 3.5" dock on another ICY Dock drive caddy that I recently purchased that was similar to the problem experienced with the 2.5" dock. I need reliable connections and high uptime for my servers. I no longer have confidence that the ICY DOCK drive caddy's are built well enough to provide that reliability.

I can no longer recommend these ICY DOCK drive caddy's for applications that require high reliability or where you are swapping out drives on a regular basis. I recommend that you seek out other options as I will be doing to replace the failing drive caddy's that I have.
