The 5.25" device bay has been a long standard in computer history. It started from the 90s legacy industrial PC cases all the way to today's Micro ATX cases. The 5.25" bay has been widely used for optical drives such as DVD and Blue-ray, or with even a single 3.5" hard drive with mobile rack. However, it is almost impossible to use a single 5.25" bay to create complex RAID storage until the MB996SP-6SB Full Metal 6 x 2.5" SATA Hard Drive & SSD Backplane.

5 out of 5 eggsWish I knew about ICY earlier

Pros: Fits 6 SSDs about as compactly as I can think of. Has built in fan. Trays work well for me.

Cons: The lights seem inconsistent (or maybe I already have failing drives). The trays and screws are tedious to add/remove drives from (not the dock itself, the trays).

Other Thoughts: This will be my first of many ICY DOCKs. Solid quality and good design. This really cleans up a multi drive build. Its nice knowing I don't need to pull the case apart to add/remove/replace a drive too. In my opinion, its worth the money.

5 out of 5 eggsICY DOCK

Pros: Small enough to use in small server case.
Actually will see SATA III SSD drives

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: Building a small image server for work. Newer Intel chipsets handle RAID I or 0 well with four Drives or less. Am using 2 Intel 530 SSDs for system drive and some programs. RAID I
Using 2 INtel 3100 SSDs for data. Also Raid I
The bay that came with the server cabinet did not see the drives, but this ICY DOCK not only sees drives, connects at SATA III speeds, but is about 1 and 1/2 inches shorted so that I have more room in the server for cables.
With low voltage Xenon chip and quiet fans, the system is very quiet for a high powered server.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: So far so good. All metal construction helps with cooling and the fan is quiet enough or can be turned off if your drives are okay with it. I just set this up with 6 WD 7200RPM drives with no real complaints so far. Will update this review if anything goes wrong.

LED's don't light up the entire room. I wish all manufacturers would take note of what a properly lit component is like.

Cons: SATA cables were a little difficult to click in place for some reason. Not sure if it was the cage or the cables but a little wiggling and retrying finally got the cables in place. No harm, no foul.

Other Thoughts: There's been talk of the screws but it's not ICY DOCK's fault they have to be so short. After putting in two 2.5" drives side-by-side you're left with 0.75" for the cage and a central divider. You still need enough thickness in the cage to get a couple of threads in for the screws. Plus they have to be in a certain position for most cases / brackets.

There's also a lot of cables in a small space as you can imagine. Too bad there's no standard 6-port multilane connector they could use instead.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for storage servers

Pros: Excellent construction quality, fit and finish. The perfect item for a storage server or home NAS.

Cons: Uses two 4 pin molex connectors for power.

Other Thoughts: Would be nice if it had some built in SATA port multiplication.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat SSD cage

Pros: This cage fits right into a 5.25" bay and provides access for 6 2.5" drives. I needed space for more SSD's in my system and this unit was my choice after searching and reading reviews. I put this cage in an Antec 1200 case. Since Antec uses substantial rolled steel in this case I had no problems with the cage mounting screws that others mention. With thinner walls, I could see it being a problem but easily fixed with a plastic or rubber washer to provide a touch of offset. I mounted OCZ, Intel and Samsung SSD's in the trays. They all fit. The lights work for non-RAID drives, but the SSD's in RAID0 connected to an Asus Sabertooth Z77 did not blink on activity. This drive cage is well constructed and works fine. I like that I can turn the fan OFF for SSD's which don't require the cooling.

Cons: The screws for mounting the SSD's to the trays sometimes required an extra bit of tightening for a solid fit. The Samsung and Intel drives slid right in, the OCZ drives took a little wiggling to get them to latch the first time. Tolerance is tight in this unit so a bit of manipulation is to be expected.

Other Thoughts: I really like this cage and I am glad I have an easier way to add and remove drives from my system. Four bays are used and I expect to fill the other two along the way. A very small but nice addition would be some label tags for the trays so you remember which one goes where.

2 out of 5 eggsNice at first, but has serious reliability problems

Pros: Fairly affordable and makes excellent use of a 5.25" bay.

Cons: Construction specifications are off and the unit doesn't fit properly in a 5.25" bay. When securing in the unit in a case, you'll find that it's considerably narrower than the bay itself, causing screws on one side of the unit to not be able to thread in.

Next, and much more worryingly, I found that several ports on the unit stopped working correctly after months of use. They were always somewhat fickle to begin with, requiring re-slotting once or twice to get an OS to see the disks consistently without noting disconnections. But now after several months, I'm finding disks intermittently dropping out while plugged into the dock. There's little to adjust when installing the disks, so it's either a connectivity issue, or there's a bad board/IC or something else along those lines. Either way, it's not reliable and I can't recommend it using this product, even for a low price.

Other Thoughts: Changing cables, drives, and even I/O controllers did nothing to help this issue. It's most certainly the unit.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good - but indeed screws are a pain

Pros: Solid build on outside case; acceptable metal drive trays; the tiny fan is much quieter than I expected.

Cons: screws are a pain: the very short case mount pan heads provided exceeded the tolerance of my supermicro case due to the pan-head. And the flat-head, countersunk drive screws were actually too long for one of my OCZ SSDs (the other drives all fit fine).

Other Thoughts: Everybody talks about the screws... yep: For the drive rails in a supermicro workstation case, the tolerance is such that you need to use their provided flathead, countersunk screws. But to fit all 6 drives into the IcyDoc,, you need to use their very short-length screws which have pan-heads. So... either cut down the Supermicro screws, or only use the rear screws which can be long since they won't hit the drive, which is what I wound up doing.
Other con is that the drive trays themselves are flimsier than I expected given the reviews, and they do seem to grate or easily misalign when adding and removing them.
I also wish the SATA cable terminators would lock in place - working in the depths of the supermicro case, by the time I get all of them in place, it seems like one has worked loose... and it's always one on the back set of three!

5 out of 5 eggsNice Cage

Pros: I have a big case and many SSD drives. This ICY Dock was exactly what I was looking for. Since it holds six drives, the drives are rather cramped. This leaves very little room hence why the screws to mount the cage are on the short side. Fortunately my case has clips to help hold it in, so the screws for me are not all that important.

The fan has a switch to change the speed of the fan or shut it off completely. I am able to achieve full SATA 3 speeds with this cage which is a plus.

Cons: The only con I can come up with at this point is that the drive holders do not come out or go in all that smoothly. It was a little easy to have them jam slightly. If you are careful, this should not be a problem since it would be uncommon to remove the drives all the often. At least for most.

Other Thoughts: I like this dock/cage. A little pricey, but it does what I need and I am glad I waited for it to become available.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Seems well made. Allows for high density/high bandwidth storage. LED's are not too bright. Fan can be adjusted or turned off for SSD's. Very easy drive access.

Cons: Doesn't include 15pin SATA to molex adapters listed in description (not listed in package contents list either, though box says "device power: 15pin SATA power x 2)"
Strange. You cannot really use 90degree SATA cables because of connector spacing. Drive activity lights don't work in conjunction with my LSI HBA. The screws for mounting the device in the computer case are way too short, you will most likely need to find your own screws, though if they protrude even a small amount into the cage, they will interfere with the drives.
