Every year, technology is able to become more and more advanced and is constantly improving. Also, with being physically the smallest, and performing the best is the end goal of any storage system. This is why SFF (Small Form Factor) storage systems are becoming more popular due to its low power consumption and space-saving benefits. With the advent of recent solid state technology, this allows 2.5" SSD's to easily achieve 500MB/sec in transfer rate, which overcomes the 3.5" SATA hard drives in every category except capacity. Therefore, maximize the capacity in a limited space becomes the most important task that many storage consulting firms are faced with often. For SFF systems, we introduce the Icy Dock MB992SK-B 2.5" SATA Mobile Rack solution for use in 3.5" device bays (Floppy bay).

5 out of 5 eggsICY Dock

Pros: Nice way to have an easily accessible mirror. Solid construction.

Cons: My 2.5" SSDs were a little tight of a fit, but not problematic.

Other Thoughts: I'm using a 3.5" floppy drive on the front of my case to store 2 SSDs in a ZFS mirror on PC-BSD. Its nice to be able to change a drive without puling the case apart.

5 out of 5 eggsgood quality mobile rack

Pros: All metal construction, ahci support, supports 2.5 notebook hard drives and ssd drives.

Cons: None really, few cases have the small bays anymore they're all full size openings so you'll need a bezel of some type. Bays do not have their own locks, one lock for both bays.

Other Thoughts: I just rebuilt my system using a SSD for the OS drive and my older hard drives for just about everything except the operating system. This unit has two separate data cables and one single sata power connector. Most mobile racks you see these days are mostly all plastic, been there, when something breaks you pretty much throw it away. My new case still has one of the smaller front access bays, in the old days it was pretty much exclusively for floppy drives but no one uses those anymore so they've morphed into bays for notebook hard drives or lately for SSD drives. This thing is great there are two doors and you can have two drives installed at once, and the bay uses the same type of key that most other mobil racks I've owned uses so you aren't toting multiple keys. If your motherboard supports ahci and the drives do as well you can hot swap. This unit will support any thickness 2.5 drive, the fattest is 12.5 mm which I'm not sure is even made anymore, the typical ssd is also sort of fat as these things go. Setup was really easy, slide it in the bay, connect the cables, unlock the door pull out the tray install the drive, slide it back in lock it and away you go. No problems loading the OS to a drive in this bay and the dual setup will make it really easy to transfer the OS for that future time when the larger units are getting cheaper.

5 out of 5 eggsICY DOCK!

Pros: Just like the TurboSwap model I praised in a previous review these all metal hot swap bays are very nice and well worth the few dollars more they cost compared to lesser models!

You will be surprised when you open the box at how much these things weigh. Felt like it was already loaded with drives.

Smooth insert/removal action..

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: buy some

5 out of 5 eggs This thing is cool.

Pros: - Great for hot swapping.
- Feels cool to unlock your drive back, pop the lever out, and pull the drive out.

Cons: - Bottom bay is a tad tight, but not unusable.

Other Thoughts: To everyone: this is designed to go in a 3.5" Floppy Bay. It is by no means a method of mounting 2.5" drives in a 3.5" HDD bay. Floppies and hard drives have different mounting points. Got it? Good.

Anyways, I enjoy playing with this more than I should...

1 out of 5 eggsDissapointed in Icy Dock

Pros: ::sigh:: It looks good on paper and DOES have a very solid build quality and the finish is so so so 'icy dock' that it makes people drool.

Cons: There is no provision for bottom mounting of the module in bottom mounted ONLY computer cages! It WILL NOT work in Cooler Master Cosmos 1000 computer case where ONLY bottom mounting of the 3.5'' hard drives is accepted! BIG BOOING is going on on this deal. WHEN will manufacturers wake UP and start building 3.5'' enclosures with the full 3.5'' hard drive form specifications? Only about 3% of the enclosures take bottom mounting into consideration.. ugh! I have pass over on so many of otherwise good enclosures because I can't use them in my computer case.

Other Thoughts: Skip this lemon if you have Cooler Master Cosmos 1000 computer case.

5 out of 5 eggsFD Screw mounts

Pros: Nice drive bay!

Cons: Only floppy drive style bay mounting screw holes.

Other Thoughts: This drive bay is hard drive size (3.5in) but designed to mount into a floppy drive slot not a hard drive slot so I had to improvise because apparently I'm a moron and missed this point when I ordered it. Just a heads up. I was mounting it into a non hot swappable server hard drive bay / took some modification to make it work but I'm very happy.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Enclosure

Pros: The drive is made from high quality metal and is extremely solid. The locking mechanism is perfect for protecting your SSD's from theft. The unit is powered by a single SATA connector which is great if you don't have many to spare. Fits perfectly in my unused FDD bay.

Cons: Could've used latches for the SATA power and SATA 1 ports. These are minor gripes unless you're like me and are prone to knocking them loose when working inside your case.

Other Thoughts: Although I never purchased mine through Newegg, overall this is by far the best drive enclosure that I've used. Most of the ones I've tried were designed for SSD's but were made for HDD bays. Many people out there have empty FDD bays in their cases and this definitely puts them to good use. ICY DOCK has several excellent drive enclosures that perfect for gaming and standard PC's. I highly recommend them in this area.

5 out of 5 eggsQucik way to transfer lots of data

Pros: I transfer large amounts of data (~10 GBs) between my home PC and my office PC. On each PC, I added one of these units, connected to a SATA III controller. I bought a SATA III SSD and installed it into one of the ICY DOCK trays. Now, I can pop the SSD into the PC at home, copy the data to it, pop it out, take it to my office, pop it into the PC in my office, and transfer the data. This is the fastest way I have found to transfer large amounts of data.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Read my review of this unit to see how I use it to swap between operating systems in one PC.

5 out of 5 eggsQuick Way to Swap OS

Pros: I want to run different operating systems on the same PC -- Windows 7 and Ubuntu. This unit allows me to load each OS on a different drive, and swap between the two drives, without having to open up the case.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsFinally a decent 3.5" laptop disk bay

Pros: Really solid, all metal. Has a single power connector that services both drives conserving cable connectors. Really nice construction with fully enclosed case.

Cons: No drive light indicating activity.

Other Thoughts: Removing drives is now safe and easy unlike those $20 bays! Much better made and worth the extra bucks to avoid having to remove drives with needle nose pliers when one of those cheap bays breaks. I will never go back to the cheepo drives after using this one.
