What exactly is this used for?

There are many different uses that you can use it for depending on what you intend to do with your computer. Users that like to collect movies and store them on their hard drives can easily swap hard drives and replace them with a fresh one. I have one flex cage installed in my main computer and plan on installing another one on my other computer. From time to time I exchange hard drives between the two computers. Instead of having to tear into both computers, I am able to use the flex cages for this. It all depends on how you are going to use your computer. Make sure that you have enough knowledge about how hard drives work and how to make the necessary changes in your motherboard bios. Changes are made in the bios if for some reason your motherboard doesn't "see" the hard drives that you are swapping. I hope that this answers your question.
